…I am so impressed with early-career authors who have written successful books. They are proof that it can be done. When I was in my twenties, I didn’t believe that my take on anything would be very interesting to anyone because I didn’t have life experience. I had a lot to learn before I had something to say, I figured. My advice to aspiring writers: don’t wait for that great insight or perfect story to work your craft. Write all the time and do so mindfully: emails, texts, inscriptions in greeting cards are all opportunities to hone your skills. One of the most beautifully crafted pieces I ever read was a recipe for shredded beets given to me by a fellow editor. Every time you put pen to paper or tap a keyboard is practice.
