“Be Proactive, Ambitious And, Above All, Be Yourself!” With Artist and Writer Ingy Rebekah

“Smile and the world smiles with you…laugh and you can light up someone else’s world.”

I had the pleasure of interviewing Ingy Rebekah — Artist, Writer and Blogger living in the beautiful island of Jersey, Channel Islands, U.K — Ingy was born and educated in Jersey, followed by an International Law, French and German degree from UWE with credit transferred to the Open University. She then became a part-time Visiting E.S.O.L/embedded life skills Lecturer for ACET Jersey, and for the local College of Further Education, whilst working full time in a Professsional therapy role. Ingy loves skiing, triathlon training and the sea, and is passionate about writing, music and working on her art!

Thank you so much for doing this with us! What is your “backstory”?

I excelled at the arts in my schooldays, however, I was also very academically driven, and chose an academic degree. However, my passion for art stayed firmly embedded in my soul and, having continued painting and drawing in my spare time, as well as taking part time courses, I have gradually built up a portfolio of art and photography that I am now considering exhibiting. I sadly lost my Mother in 2016, and, I am sure she would have been extremely proud of me for channelling my efforts into work inspired by her.

Can you share the funniest or most interesting story that happened to you in the course of your career?

I was touted for modelling in my youth, and, some work in this field. I can remember being asked to sell cameras at an event and, having gradually turned from straw-coloured blonde to more of a dusky blonde over the years, I decided that I needed to highlight my own hair, in order to confirm to the sunny, smiley blonde girl look that the agent wanted. I fell asleep on the beach with the highlights still developing, and, awoke to find approximately 6 inches of my long, mane of hair lying next to me!! Oh well readers, I still got the job!!

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I love to smile. Smiling makes the world go round, right? Smile and the world smiles with you…laugh and you can light up someone else’s world. I always stop to pass the time of day with islanders and hopefully bring joy into other people’s lives.

If someone would want to emulate your career, what would you suggest are the most important things to do?

Be proactive, ambitious and, above all, be yourself! Being genuine and centered are very important.

Is there a particular person that made a profound difference in your life to whom you are grateful? Can you share a story?

My Mum. She was the kindest, most caring and generous lady that I have ever had the good fortune to meet. Her zest for life, triumph in adversity and sunny disposition inspired me and continue to inspire me on my life journey. I can always remember her, calling out in her North East English accent “Go Ingy, go Ingy” every time I competed in any sporting or artistic competition! This enthusiasm and support shaped me into the confident woman I am today.

So what are the most exciting projects you are working on now?

As I alluded to above, I am currently working on a set of artwork inspired by places that my Mummy loved. From the unspoilt beaches of Jersey, to the ski resorts of Europe, not to mention the rest of the world, Mum and I explored, immersed ourselves in the local culture, gathered shared experiences and cultivated happy memories. This is a work in progress, however, watch this space!!
