Every Wednesday, you can drop into a new episode on the Courageous Wellness Podcast with co-hosts Erica Stein and Aly French. The episodes are centered around interviews highlighting individuals who have a beautiful wellness story to share.
“Courageous Wellness is this place where we can celebrate the experiences and life lessons of our courageous guests, while de-stigmatizing conversations in the wellness space.”
After experiencing a cancer diagnosis in her twenties (Aly) and a sustained 50lb. weight loss and self-love journey (Erica), both hosts felt called to share their emotional journeys- never imagining in the beginning that their message would resonate with listeners around the world. “The ability to repeatedly reinforce to our listeners that they are not alone is so hugely impactful.” The emotional journeys we experience in life truly make up the most of our wellness journey, and so it’s important for podcasters like Aly and Erica to create a space where it’s okay to explore these journeys, discuss their impact and meaning, and celebrate progress.
When this duo started their podcast, if you had called them influencers they might have fallen down with laughter. Their humble start is something they believe has served them well. Not only did they start out with just about nothing, they also started with very minimal knowledge of podcasting.
“Getting started, our lack of knowledge really served us well. We knew just enough to start and just enough to not let that keep us from starting. It was almost like blind ignorance and so we didn’t really limit ourselves. There was enough saturation- of others launching in the wellness category- we decided to jump in and figure it out like everyone else. Allowing the lessons and refinement along the way to be part of the journey is kind of who we are.”
Learning in the moment, when it’s applicable and relevant, is so effective. Especially with everything is such a constant state of change. It’s never going to be the case that you learn what you need and you’re ready to launch and run with it. There will always be learning, growth, and refinement that needs to happen.
Wellness is a right everyone should have. This simple message is fraught with complexities, preconceived notions, and a million other pitfalls along the way. And an attempt to solve all the world’s wellness problems would be absolutely maddening and exhausting, so these co-hosts have a different approach, one that just screams influence.
“We are working hard to talk about topics that aren’t easy. Not necessarily in a solution-seeking way, but to bring awareness and to start conversations, and to bring light to what might be dark areas for our listeners. We are creating space for inspiration, acceptance, and a raw look at wellness.”
The Truth About Podcasting
It’s important to point out that, while it’s easy to start, it’s much more difficult to keep going. There are over 700,000 podcasts out there- but only 140,000 are active. Why? Because podcasting is constant work and I’m going to assume that plenty of these hosts just had no idea what they were getting into. “It’s not all shiny and glossy, and you can’t expect it all to just flow. You have to keep the flow.” Yes, podcasting is trendy and has low barriers, but it definitely requires consistent work and consistent time commitment. You might be responsible for:
● Sharing + Social Media
● Networking + Promoting
● Publicist + Guest Correspondence
When you are staring down this to do list, especially in the beginning when your podcast isn’t a money maker, you might struggle to keep going like plenty of other hosts do.
“You need a why to fall back on. For the days when it gets really hard, and the grind is wearing you down, you need a purpose and a reason that’s bigger than yourself to keep going. Our why has kept us moving, because we believe in what we’re doing and the need for it.”
For Aly and Erica, podcasting has totally changed their lives. From going back to school and hosting and moderating wellness panels, to speaking on a variety of wellness topics- both hosts recognize the transformation podcasting has brought to their lives. “This is our life now. We have listeners around the world, and while we are still considered micro-influencers, we see the impact all around us, and all we can think about now is what is possible in the future.”
