Danielle Joubert Of SumaNurica On 5 Things Anyone Can Do to Have Healthy, Radiant, Flawless Skin
An Interview With Athalia Monae
Adequate Sleep: Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep! When you get enough rest, your skin has time to repair and regenerate, resulting in a brighter, healthier complexion.
Each day, millions strive to unlock the secrets of blemish-free, luminous skin, yet many find this goal frustratingly out of reach. In a market saturated with quick fixes and fad trends, it’s vital to cut through the noise and understand what truly works. Our skin is our largest organ and the shield between our bodies and the outside world; it deserves more than just a superficial approach. As part of this series, we had the pleasure of interviewing Danielle Joubert, Product Education Manager at SumaNurica.
Introducing Danielle Joubert, SumaNurica’s Product Education Manager. With a Diploma of Dermal Therapy, a Diploma of Nutritional Therapy, a Bachelor of Marketing and over 10 years of experience (with 8 years spent in-clinic), Danielle is an experienced skin specialist who has previously worked with notable skincare brands including Dermalogica, Aspect Skincare, Endota Spa and Medik8.
Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series. Before we dive into our discussion about networking, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share with us the backstory about what brought you to your specific career path?
My journey into skincare started with my personal experience of dealing with severe acne throughout my teenage years. This personal challenge fueled my passion for skincare and my desire to help and support others on their own skin journeys. In 2011, I entered the beauty world, and pursued a Diploma of Beauty Therapy, followed by a Diploma of Dermal Therapy. Working in both Australia and North America, with some of the biggest skincare brands worldwide inspired me to further explore the connection between our skin health and nutrition, leading me to complete a Diploma of Nutritional Therapy. This holistic approach allowed me to understand the skin from both clinical and nutritional perspectives. After eight years in clinical and educational roles, I pursued a Bachelor of Marketing, which led me into brand management. This shift allowed me to blend my love for skincare with creating authentic brands and building supportive communities. As the Product Education Manager at SumaNurica, I continue to share my passion and dedication by educating our customers on skincare and helping them make informed skincare choices and achieve healthy, radiant skin.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?
One of the most interesting and exciting things I’ve done so far in my career is launching skincare brands into new international markets. I’ve had the chance to do this twice now, and each time has been a unique adventure. It never gets any easier, but that’s part of the fun! Getting to understand different cultures, and their specific skincare needs, and adapting our marketing communication to fit those nuances is always a learning experience. Seeing how our products are received in diverse markets and tailoring our approach to meet customer expectations is incredibly rewarding. It’s been a real eye-opener and has kept me excited about what’s next in the global skincare landscape.
You are a successful business leader. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?
Empathy: Understanding and connecting with people on a personal level has been crucial within the skincare industry. Empathy allows us to create skincare products and beauty campaigns that truly resonate with our customers’ needs. When I first started in the industry, I led an acne awareness campaign and made it a priority to listen to our customers’ stories and experiences. By putting myself in their shoes, we were able to develop new product enhancements and genuine, quality content that truly resonated and strengthened our connection and trust with our community.
Curiosity: The skincare industry is constantly evolving, and staying curious has driven me to continuously learn and adapt. I’m continually seeking out new knowledge, whether it’s through attending seminars or diving into the latest research. I’m incredibly grateful for our talented research and development team at SumaNurica, whose passion for learning and innovation drives us to push the boundaries of skincare science.
Adaptability: Being able to adjust to changing circumstances has been essential in this dynamic skincare industry. When faced with shifting consumer trends or the ways in which we connect with our customers, adaptability allows us to pivot and stay ahead. For example, as the conversation shifted from anti-aging to pro-aging, we embraced this change by focusing on promoting age management and healthy skin at every stage of life. This adaptability allowed us to create more inclusive and empowering messaging that resonates with our audience, reinforcing our brand’s commitment to celebrating natural beauty and supporting our customers through every phase of their skincare journey.
What are your “ 5 Things Anyone Can Do to Have Healthy, Radiant, Flawless Skin”?
- Sun Protection: Make sunscreen your best friend! Using an SPF30 (or higher) daily is key to keeping your skin healthy and helps to prevent premature skin aging.
- Consistent Skincare Routine: Stick to a simple and effective skincare routine. Regular cleansing and moisturising are essential for maintaining radiant skin. But, consistency is really the secret here.
- Balanced Diet: What you eat can make a big difference in your skin’s appearance. Eating more fruits, veggies, and foods rich in omega-3s can do wonders for your skin.
- Hydration: Staying hydrated is super important for maintaining skin health. Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin plump and glowing. When you’re well-hydrated, your skin looks and feels so much better.
- Adequate Sleep: Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep! When you get enough rest, your skin has time to repair and regenerate, resulting in a brighter, healthier complexion.
What are the most common misconceptions about daily skincare routines that prevent people from achieving radiant skin?
One widespread misconception is that using more products will automatically yield better results. Many people believe that piling on multiple skincare items will deliver faster or more noticeable improvements, but this can often backfire. Overloading the skin with too many products can lead to irritation, clogged pores, and an imbalance in the skin’s natural barrier. It’s more effective to use a few well-chosen products that address your specific skin needs.
Secondly, many people underestimate the importance of sun protection, assuming it’s only necessary on sunny days. In reality, UV rays can cause significant damage even on cloudy or rainy days, leading to premature aging and an increased risk of skin cancers. Regularly applying sunscreen, regardless of the weather, is crucial for protecting your skin and maintaining its health over time.
Could you share your insights on how diet and nutrition directly affect skin health, and perhaps suggest some superfoods for skin radiance?
Diet and nutrition are vital for keeping your skin looking its best, and that’s exactly why I studied nutritional therapy — it’s so closely linked to our skin’s health. What you eat directly impacts your skin’s health and glow. Foods packed with antioxidants, like berries, can help fight off damage from free radicals and support your skin’s natural repair. Adding more berries to your diet can really boost your skin’s radiance. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish like salmon, are also key. They help strengthen your skin’s barrier, reduce inflammation, and keep it hydrated. This is especially helpful if you deal with dry or irritated skin. Leafy greens, like spinach and kale, are loaded with vitamins A and C, which are essential for collagen production and keeping your skin elastic. Collagen helps keep your skin firm and smooth, while vitamin C aids in repairing and regenerating skin tissues. Incorporating these superfoods into your diet can make such a difference in how your skin looks and feels. A balanced diet rich in these nutrients complements your skincare routine and helps you maintain a vibrant, healthy complexion.
How do you recommend individuals tailor their skincare routine to address the unique needs of their skin type and environment?
Understanding your skin type is the first step in tailoring a skincare routine. Individuals with oily skin might benefit from lightweight, oil-free products, while those with dry skin should focus on rich, hydrating formulations. Consider the environment as well — urban areas with pollution require additional protection, while those in drier climates might need extra hydration. I advise clients to adjust their routines seasonally and pay attention to how their skin responds to different products and environmental changes. Consulting with a skin care professional can provide valuable insights and personalized recommendations.
What advances in skincare science or new ingredients are you most excited about that promise to enhance skin health and radiance?
I’m really excited about the advances in the biotechnology space, particularly in the field of peptide technology and microbiome-friendly skincare. Biotechnology has opened up new possibilities for developing ingredients that are both highly effective and tailored to our skin’s needs. There are advancements in peptide sunscreens — these innovative formulations are looking to combine peptides with SPF technology to provide enhanced protection against UV damage while also offering advanced skin-rejuvenating benefits. These breakthroughs in biotechnology are reshaping skincare, offering us new ways to achieve visible, long-lasting results and truly enhance skin health and radiance — which I love.
Can you describe a holistic approach to skincare that encompasses not just topical treatments but also lifestyle and wellness practices?
A holistic approach to skincare goes beyond topical treatments and embraces a lifestyle that nurtures the skin from the inside out. This approach encompasses a balanced diet rich in nutrients, regular exercise to boost circulation, adequate sleep for skin repair, and stress management. Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as yoga or meditation, can reduce stress, which often manifests in skin issues like acne or eczema. Hydration is also key — drinking enough water helps maintain the skin’s moisture balance, keeping it plump and healthy. If we start viewing skincare as a comprehensive lifestyle choice, we will start to see improvements in our skin’s natural functions and overall well-being. Nurturing both the mind and body reflects positively on our skin, leading to a healthier, more radiant complexion.
You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-)
I would start a movement to promote skin health education for all ages, focusing on the importance of early habits and prevention. By empowering people with knowledge about skin health from a young age, we can help them make informed choices and prevent long-term damage. This movement would emphasise the importance of sun protection, proper nutrition, and mental wellness in maintaining healthy skin. Educating communities on these topics could lead to a generation that prioritises skin health, reducing the prevalence of preventable skin issues and fostering a culture of self-care and confidence.
