Establish clear, consistent, and high expectations: Children are more likely to strive and thrive when the adults in their lives communicate clear and ambitious — yet achievable — expectations for their success. In fact, two widely cited meta-analyses have revealed that parent expectations for their students’ education achievement had the strongest relationship (of the parenting variables studied) with children’s academic achievement. But success is about more than just grades or school achievement; high and clearly communicated expectations for students’ behavior and work habits can also make a difference. Although high expectations can be beneficial, it is also to ensure they are realistic and are accompanied by scaffolding and encouragement.
