The third strategy involves kindness and a commitment to helping others succeed, recognizing the interconnectedness of success. The fourth strategy revolves around self-belief and adopting a holistic approach to wellbeing, acknowledging that personal and professional aspects are intertwined. Lastly, the fifth strategy champions a “Never Never Quit” attitude, reinforcing the unwavering commitment to realizing your vision and materializing your dreams.

As a part of our series about how to become known as a thought leader in your industry, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Cesar Quitana.

Dr. Cesar Quintana is a passionate advocate for the creation of strong and healthy communities. He believes that community is not just a collection of individuals but a collective effort to foster well-being and productivity among its members. With a deep commitment to serving his community, Dr. Quintana offers chiropractic health and wellness services to the residents of Las Vegas, NV. His mission is to contribute to the betterment of society by helping individuals lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you briefly share with our readers why you are an authority about the topic of thought leadership?

I am a recognized authority in the realm of thought leadership, drawing from my unique background as a US-born child of immigrant parents hailing from Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico. As the firstborn among my cousins on both sides of my parents’ families in the United States, my roots trace back to Tucson, AZ, where I was born before relocating to Las Vegas, NV at the age of four. Reflecting on my childhood, I take pride in recognizing the significance of my family’s journey and its impact on my personal development.

Now holding a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, I attribute my path to the natural holistic care instilled by my mother, who emphasized the importance of self-care. Fueled by the knowledge passed down from my ancestors, I aspired to become a healthcare leader within my community. Commencing this journey by acknowledging my Mexican heritage, particularly my roots in Sonora and Chihuahua, has been integral to my identity.

In alignment with Winston Churchill’s philosophy of “Never, never, never give up,” I navigated challenges with determination and faith in my capabilities. This resilience became foundational to my success as a Mexican American Doctor of Chiropractic. My commitment to empowering others through stories of perseverance is driven by the belief that everyone, especially the underserved and underinsured populations, should hear narratives of determination and hope.

Practicing in various states, including NV, AZ, FL, and holding a Chiropractic License in CA, I have consistently integrated my experiences into chiropractic care. My focus extends to Latino communities that often lack accessibility to quality healthcare. Having worked in the food and beverage industry in Las Vegas, I learned to accommodate diverse individuals from around the world. Translating this knowledge, I apply a personalized approach to treatment for the underserved, ensuring they feel valued and prioritized in matters of healthcare and community well-being.

Maintaining authority in one’s field is crucial for community health, but humility and intelligence are equally vital for success. As a healthcare provider, empathy and leadership are essential qualities, particularly when catering to underserved populations. Through my practice, I strive to make a meaningful impact by fostering inclusivity, countering healthcare disparities, and emphasizing the importance of every individual in their journey toward well-being.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?

One of the most impactful experiences in my life occurred during a health mission in San Salvador, El Salvador, prompted by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake on January 13, 2001. Remarkably, this earthquake struck just a month before my scheduled arrival. Our mission, as a group of doctors, was to address the healthcare needs of the population grappling with the aftermath of the earthquake, both in terms of its impact on social structures and individual health.

What added a layer of intensity to this mission was my personal encounter with another earthquake, a 6.6 magnitude one, on February 13, 2001. This seismic event unfolded as I was en route to the clinic where I served as an Intern Doctor of Chiropractic. Traveling in a VW Bus with a fellow doctor, we were abruptly halted as the earth swayed beneath us, revealing a chaotic scene of thousands of people running and screaming for survival. Despite the disbelief, my determination to fulfill the mission persisted, and we pressed on.

Immediately after the quake subsided, we headed straight to the clinic. My primary concern was for my patient Carlos, whom I had seen the day before. Carlos was the first person I had treated in El Salvador. Upon arriving the day before the earthquake, a pivotal moment occurred. Prior to reaching the designated clinic, I had fervently asked God for protection and guidance in aiding His people. Stepping out of the VW bus, a nurse urgently approached me, exclaiming, “Doctor! There is a patient lying down in the back of a small red truck.” It was a profound moment that affirmed my purpose. Rushing to the truck, I found Carlos, paralyzed due to a severe spinal lumbar fracture sustained a month earlier, without any prior treatment or surgery. His resilience and the absence of hospital care struck me deeply.

I committed to seeing Carlos every day as my first patient during the mission, despite the challenges. On February 12, he went home after treatment, with the promise of seeing him the next morning. The following day, on our way to the clinic, we experienced the second earthquake. Concerned for Carlos, living in poverty with a collapsed home, I directed the driver to head straight to the clinic. Miraculously, Carlos was there, having heeded my advice to be present on the morning of February 13th. We provided him with the necessary treatment, and he returned to a destroyed home. In the aftermath, Carlos expressed gratitude, sharing that while he lost his home, he hadn’t lost his life because he came to the clinic before the earthquake.

This profound experience in El Salvador left an indelible mark on me, emphasizing the unpredictable impact one can have when helping others. It underscored the importance of selfless service and the potential for positive influence, even in the face of unforeseen challenges.

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

The funniest mistake I made as a Chiropractic Doctor was not charging for my treatments because I wanted to help for free while I was renting space. My mentor had to explain to me I needed to pay bills as well but he understood my heart and compassion for others. I learned that it was ok to help and create financial success so you can help even more by having a facility you can rent and function professionally for your community.

Ok, thank you for that. Let’s now jump to the main focus of our interview. In a nutshell, how would you define what a ‘Thought Leader’ is? How is a thought leader different from a typical leader? How is a thought leader different from an influencer?

A thought leader, in my perspective, embodies someone with profound expertise that guides and inspires others within their profession. In my case, I aspire to be a Chiropractor’s Chiropractor, signifying success in providing knowledge and care to professional colleagues when required. True thought leadership involves seeking unconventional avenues to contribute to one’s community, coupled with a clear purpose and applied intelligence in one’s craft or profession. Kindness is paramount for a thought leader, as is the integration of intelligence into healthcare practices, all delivered with genuine compassion.

In contrast to typical leaders who understand outcomes and navigate a conventional path to success, thought leaders prioritize innovation. While typical leaders focus on task completion and personal objectives, thought leaders actively cultivate an environment that encourages others to become leaders themselves. The distinction between influencer leadership and thought leadership lies in the endgame — influencers seek followers and likes, aiming to entertain and maintain attention for personal gain, often driven by algorithms. They are fixated on a “look at me” approach, craving attention and importance.

On the other hand, thought leaders are architects of the environment in which influencers operate. Their focus extends beyond personal recognition, aiming to create lasting impact and inspire others to become leaders. Thought leadership is characterized by a selfless commitment to the betterment of the community and the elevation of those within it. The true measure of a thought leader lies in the enduring legacy they build, contrasting the transient influence pursued by influencers.

Can you talk to our readers a bit about the benefits of becoming a thought leader? Why do you think it is worthwhile to invest resources and energy into this?

Becoming a thought leader offers the profound benefit of contributing to a world characterized by peace, love, and innovation. Embracing kindness as a thought leader is instrumental in cultivating longevity and fostering an atmosphere of optimism. A key advantage lies in the enhanced ability to adapt to change efficiently, as thought leaders prioritize thinking of others and promoting their growth, avoiding the competitive trappings of ego-driven conquests.

Investing resources and energy into thought leadership not only leads to personal success but also imparts lasting significance to your journey. It provides a pathway to understanding your life’s purpose, infusing each day with the energy needed to consistently show up and contribute meaningfully. The power of a definite purpose-oriented mindset is transformative, channeling energy into realizing not only your dreams but also playing a pivotal role in manifesting the aspirations of those around you, fueling their desire to succeed. Thought leadership, therefore, emerges not just as a personal journey but as a catalyst for positive change, both internally and within the broader community.

Let’s talk about business opportunities specifically. Can you share a few examples of how thought leadership can help a business grow or create lucrative opportunities?

The impact of thought leadership on a business is huge, paving the way for growth and lucrative opportunities. It begins with a clear understanding of your goals, setting the foundation for efficient and purposeful actions. A thought leader exhibits courage in the face of the unknown, especially when strategies transition into the action phase. With the momentum from the action phase, your envisioned goals transform into tangible growth, culminating in financial success.

Authentic leadership is a linchpin for a thought leader, fostering a collaborative T.E.A.M. (Together Each Achieves More) mentality. This approach not only contributes to financial success but is also instrumental in the individual self-improvement of each team member. Thought leadership, therefore, goes beyond mere business strategy; it encompasses a holistic vision that incorporates both financial achievements and the personal development of those involved. The synergy of a visionary approach and authentic leadership forms the bedrock for sustained success in the realm of thought leadership.

Ok. Now that we have that behind us, we’d love to hear your thoughts about how to eventually become a thought leader. Can you share 5 strategies that a person should implement to become known as a thought leader in their industry?

Implementing these strategies has been integral to my journey, particularly as I pursued my path to becoming a Chiropractic Doctor. The first strategy centers on cultivating a sense of gratitude for blessings and accomplishments. This attitude not only sets you apart among your peers but also fosters meaningful connections within your family. The second strategy emphasizes the importance of clarity in your desires, serving as a powerful tool to minimize time constraints and overcome obstacles.

Reflecting on my own journey, these strategies played a pivotal role when, at the age of 16, I walked into a chiropractor’s office after a motor vehicle accident. While I had received maintenance care before, it was in that moment that a profound sense of purpose enveloped me. Working as a Chiropractic Assistant in that very office, I envisioned myself as a Licensed Doctor, clad in a white coat, dedicated to serving my patients. This vision became a driving force, and I never wavered in my pursuit.

Gratitude became a constant companion, particularly for the support received from the doctors in that office. The mantra of knowing what I wanted echoed in my journey, guiding me through each goal. A relentless “Never Never Quit” attitude became a foundational principle, reinforced by unwavering belief in myself and a holistic approach to wellbeing. Today, I find fulfillment in doing what I love and loving what I do, a testament to the power of these enduring strategies in shaping my success.

In your opinion, who is an example of someone who has done a fantastic job as a thought leader? Which specific things have impressed you about that person? What lessons can we learn from this person’s approach?

A person who exemplifies thought leadership is Martin Luther King Jr. I have always appreciated his speeches, but one that left a lasting impact on me was the speech he delivered to students at Barratt Junior High School in Philadelphia on October 26, 1967. The title of his speech was “What is your life’s blueprint.” In it, he conveyed the idea that each individual is the architect of their own life, emphasizing the importance of having a proper, solid blueprint.

King emphasized the significance of a deep belief in one’s dignity, worth, and “somebodiness.” He urged his audience to always feel worthy and understand the importance of their lives. He coined the principle of “somebodiness,” highlighting the pursuit of excellence in various fields of endeavor outlined in one’s life’s blueprint.

In his speech, King encouraged listeners to study hard, burn the midnight oil when opportunities arise, and pursue their chosen paths with dedication. He urged them to approach their goals as if called by God Almighty at that precise moment in history.

Furthermore, King emphasized the idea that regardless of one’s occupation, they should strive to be the best in their respective roles. He used examples such as sweeping streets with the same dedication as Michelangelo painted, Beethoven composed, Leontyne Price sang, or Shakespeare wrote poetry.

The overarching message was to be the best at whatever one chooses to be, emphasizing the importance of high character and dignity that can never be taken away. King also highlighted the uniqueness of human nature, emphasizing internal greatness regardless of one’s background.

Remarkably, King delivered these powerful messages in a time devoid of cell phones and internet services. His commitment to spreading an authentic message of hope and inspiration for humanity underscored his dedication to eternal principles of beauty, love, and justice.

King’s final point emphasized the importance of contemplating greatness, love, forgiveness, and peace in our lives as we strive to achieve through life’s blueprint. His timeless teachings serve as a beacon for individuals navigating the complexities of life.

I have seen some discussion that the term “thought leader” is trite, overused, and should be avoided. What is your feeling about this?

When embodying authenticity as a Thought Leader, I don’t view others and their leadership definitions in a restrictive manner. The world has a remarkable way of rejuvenating itself and presenting what is necessary for people to evolve towards betterment, kindness, and love. The term “thought leadership” is expressed in the English language, yet its interpretation may vary across different cultures. In the United States of America, where we currently reside, I believe leaders of this kind are crucial for addressing our societal differences in the present historical context.

In Spanish, we often say “Cada Cabeza es un Mundo,” translating to “Every Head is a world of its own.” This phrase resonates with me as it fosters a mindset of respect and understanding when encountering diverse individuals or cultures. This perspective is deeply rooted in my personal background, being born in Tucson, AZ, to Mexican immigrant parents who harbored the dream of living in the USA. It serves as a constant reminder to approach interactions with others with empathy and openness, recognizing the uniqueness inherent in every individual’s experiences and perspectives.

What advice would you give to other leaders to thrive and avoid burnout?

Never Never Quit. Winston Churchill said that. It has stuck with me since junior high school when we studied the early nineteenth history of the world. Be kind in your endeavors and help others succeed. Believe in your greatness and in others. Rest when needed and care for yourself.

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-)

Inspiration is what happens when you are created for this earth. Learn from great exceptional leaders that left you a path to success. Remove your ego when thinking of your importance. There is an equation to every purpose driven life. The equation is different variables that were created before your time that come together to finally solve your unknown in your lifetime. That is the blessing of leadership and serving for others on this earth.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

“Some men see things as they are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were, and ask why not.” It is relevant to my life because, “Why Not”. Why not be who you are destined to be. Why not me. Why not help others?

We are blessed that very prominent leaders in business and entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world with whom you would like to have lunch or breakfast? He or she might just see this, especially if we tag them. :-)

I would love to have lunch with former President Barack Obama.
