I had the pleasure of interviewing Terence Latimer, the founder of Food Tribe, a 360° platform that works with restaurants and food brands.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! What is your “backstory”?

I am a digital marketer and entrepreneur based in Los Angeles. I’m also the founder of 360° platform Food Tribe, a startup that works with restaurants and food brands to develop better relationships with foodies.

In 2017, Food Tribe raised 80% of our crowdfunding goal on Indiegogo. Our #JoinTheTribe campaign gave Food Tribe the funds we need to build a better restaurant review platform.

Can you share the funniest or most interesting story that happened to you since you began leading your company?

The most interesting part of Food Tribe’s story really is about how it started. I took a one-day course at General Assembly regarding finding purpose in your work.

The speaker that day said to look at the center of your (a) talents (b) your definition of a quality of life © and understanding the impact you wanted to have on the world, and you would at least have an idea of what you wanted out of life.

I walked out of the room that day with an idea to combine my love of food, a passion for technology, and a desire to make sure no one ever had to go hungry.

What do you think makes your company stand out? Can you share a story?

One of my favorite stories is of one of our clients, Tribal Cafe, in Downtown Los Angeles. The owner Josh is this eccentric guy who loves cooking and being artistic.

His customers love him because he’s all about fresh ingredients and paying it forward. Working for clients who are passionate about what they do makes it all worthwhile.

Are you working on any new or exciting projects now?

Food Tribe has two big projects coming up this year: we’re prototyping our new restaurant review platform and are exploring a food waste program designed to help local restaurants.

What advice would you give to other CEOs or founders to help their employees to thrive?

Number one is to trust your team: one of my favorite things I like to remind my teammates is that I hired them because of their unique voices.

Trust your team and they’ll do amazing things for your startup, your customers, and themselves.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are?

There’s too many to name! For me, it starts with my family for teaching my values, my friends for helping me to develop an identify, I’ve got too many teachers and mentors to name.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

Definitely! Food Tribe’s ultimate mission is to end the broken food production system: FOOD WASTE SUCKS.

Can you share the top five lessons that you have learned from your experience as a “Black Man In Tech”?

No one is going to give it to you: I’ve had just about every job you could think of, restaurant server, social media manager, digital marketing executive, and one thing I’ve learned again and again is that if you want something, you have to go after it. Creating luck, seeking opportunity, and preparing for the moment should all be a part of your daily routine.

1.Patience: Patience has been the most difficult to lesson, and one I’m dealing with right now. One of my core strengths has been energy. My high level of energy tends to increase creativity and helps to maintain the long-term vision. That challenge becomes the daily requirements in order to get there. Pay your dues, take your time, and enjoy the ride. The only destination is the one in your head.

2. Gratitude: Gratitude is the most important lesson. Your health, your family, the last great slice of pizza you had: find something you’re grateful for (especially during the tough times).. As a black founder, it’s sometimes easy to have a chip on your shoulder: channel that energy in and turn it into an opportunity to be thankful.

3. Find Your Tribe: Find the people who support you. The fakes — the ones who don’t ask you to be the best version of yourself, will keep you from your goals. Surround yourself with people who challenge you, keep you accountable, and find happiness in your success.

4. Be Your #1 Fan: At the end of the day, it boils down to love. Love yourself, then love others.

Some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this :-)

There’s obviously a ton of people I’d love to meet, a few of the top names include Elon Musk and Warren Buffet.

Right now, for me though, two entrepreneurs I’m following closely are Nipsey Hussle and Tristan Walker.
