Start writing today. Everyone has a book in them. I lacked the confidence for a long time to write a book because I believed that my story wasn’t important enough to share. Once I shifted my thinking to trying to help other people, everything changed.

As part of my interview series, I had the pleasure of interviewing Gerad Davis. Gerad is the co-author of the book, Before There Was an After.

The book is a powerful and emotional memoir by a mother and son that recounts their seven-year journey through his heroin addiction and multiple attempts at recovery. Honest, heartbreaking, and revealing, they share their very personal experience, mistakes and search for answers.

The book is intended to be a resource for families dealing with a loved one’s struggles providing insight, explanations, and validation that this insidious disease is a disease that affects the entire family.

Ultimately, Gerad got help at Burning Tree Ranch, where he is now an admissions counselor for Burning Tree Programs.

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you share a story about what brought you to this particular career path?

During one of my many attempts to get sober, my mom suggested that I keep a journal and threw out the idea of writing a book. At the time I was living in Elko, Nevada in the middle of winter with no car. I was walking around trying to get a job and would often end up at the local library writing my thoughts and experiences. It took many years for this to come to fruition. I had many hurdles to overcome since that would be the last time, I used anything.

Can you share the most interesting story that occurred to you in the course of your career?

The most interesting part about this journey came after writing the book. The number of messages expressing thanks and hearing about others’ struggles has been a huge deal to me. So, many people are impacted by this and it’s encouraging to hear people open up about it after reading “Before there was an After”.
