Acknowledging the rapid pace of technological change, developing a product is just the beginning; continuous updates are essential to keep the technology state-of-the-art and relevant in a dynamic landscape.

In recent years, Big Tech has gotten a bad rep. But of course many tech companies are doing important work making monumental positive changes to society, health, and the environment. To highlight these, we started a new interview series about “Technology Making An Important Positive Social Impact”. We are interviewing leaders of tech companies who are creating or have created a tech product that is helping to make a positive change in people’s lives or the environment. As a part of this series, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. MaryRose Reaston.

Dr. Reaston is the CEO of Segen-Health. She is an inventor, successful author and considered an expert on medical technologies, healthcare, wellness and innovation. She has devoted the majority of her career to developing new technologies to assist people to manage their Musculoskeletal Conditions, thereby preventing unnecessary surgeries, reliance on medications and leading a more productive life.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series. Before we dive in, our readers would love to learn a bit more about you. Can you tell us a bit about your childhood backstory and how you grew up?

Being the offspring of parents who were the first generation born in the United States after immigrating from Italy, I felt a profound sense of responsibility to fulfill their dreams for a better future. Neither of my parents had the opportunity to attend college, yet they harbored a fervent desire for me to receive a quality education, attend college, and pursue my aspirations. Throughout my academic journey, from college to earning my doctorate, their unwavering support has been my bedrock. They not only encouraged me to dream big but also played a pivotal role in funding my first company. Their steadfast belief in my potential has been the driving force behind my commitment to helping people lead better lives and actively engaging in the realm of healthcare.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you began your career?

In my career, I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to embark on a global journey, delving into the realms of health and wellness while establishing medical clinics worldwide. These travels have not only exposed me to diverse experiences, such as teaching Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga in the UAE, but have also facilitated meaningful encounters with international healthcare leaders and the brightest minds in the field. The individuals who resonated with my vision of empowering people to take charge of their health and well-being have become my co-founders at Segen- Health. Their collective expertise has been instrumental in shaping our endeavors, and together, we’ve forged a game-changing wellness company that aims to make a substantial impact in the world of health and holistic well-being.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

On my journey to becoming the person I am today, a multitude of individuals have played pivotal roles. From the inspiring female entrepreneurs at Yoga Your Way to the invaluable collaboration with my business partners at Segen-Health, each person has contributed to shaping my path. However, the most influential figure in my life has undoubtedly been my loving and supportive husband, Phil Reaston. Serving as my true guiding light, Phil not only showcases brilliance as an inventor but also brings our shared visions to life. Through the highs and lows, he has been my unwavering rock, consistently encouraging me to press forward. Phil shares my fervor for empowering individuals with the tools to enhance their lives through health and wellness. Despite the challenges we’ve faced on this journey, his resilience and ability to navigate through difficulties have been indispensable. Together, we form a cohesive unit, two halves that fit seamlessly into one another, making the journey more enriching and worthwhile.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

One of my favorite life lesson quotes is, “Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.” This quote serves as a guiding principle for how I choose to live my life. The power of kindness resonates deeply with me, not only for its positive impact on one’s inner sense of positivity and well-being but also for its proven ability to create a positive feedback loop, generating more good with each act of kindness. I firmly believe that initiating change starts from within, and there’s no better starting point than practicing kindness towards oneself and others. My daily mantra revolves around committing to at least one small act of kindness for both myself and someone else. This simple practice not only uplifts my mood but also helps me stay centered and resilient in the face of challenges. Embracing kindness not only cultivates a positive emotional state but also contributes to maintaining a healthier physical body. So, in every circumstance, I strive to be kind.

You are a successful business leader. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?

The three character traits that are most important to me are: Integrity, Communication and Confidence.

During my childhood, my dad instilled in me a crucial life lesson: your word is your bond. This principle has become a cornerstone of my character, guiding my actions and decisions. Integrity, synonymous with truthfulness, holds immense value in my understanding of relationships. The belief that what I say aligns with what I do forms the bedrock of trust and respect. I’ve walked away from companies I founded when asked to compromise my integrity, as it remains non-negotiable for me. Maintaining integrity is paramount in working relationships, and I continue to collaborate with individuals I met early in my career. Whether we’ve recently connected or not, the foundation of mutual respect and trust built on integrity endures.

In my management style, support is paramount, fostering open lines of communication and empowering our team to trust their instincts and build confidence. Confidence, a trait I struggled to master early in my career, and is now a driving force for me. Believing in myself has become a powerful mantra, as I’ve learned to trust my insights and embrace the confidence needed to shape my own path. Dr. Naiyer Imam, my esteemed partner at Segen-Health and our dedicated Medical Director, has consistently exemplified his unwavering commitment to quality medicine. Beyond his impressive medical expertise, what stands out most is his enduring integrity, strength of character, and deep compassion. Time after time, Dr. Imam has showcased a genuine passion for delivering healthcare of the highest standard. His unwavering dedication to upholding ethical standards and providing compassionate care is not only commendable but serves as a driving force for our collective mission at Segen-Health. He leads by example and working with him is truly a gift and inspiration. I am grateful for the privilege of working alongside someone whose values and commitment align so seamlessly with the core principles of our wellness company.

Ok super. Let’s now shift to the main part of our discussion about the technology or medical devices that you are helping to create that can make a positive impact on our wellness. To begin, which particular problems are you aiming to solve?

As the global $4.7 trillion wellness industry undergoes significant growth and transformation, the industry as a whole faces a critical challenge of fragmentation, especially in the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Sector. An estimated 1.71 billion people worldwide grapple with musculoskeletal conditions; 30 % of People over the age of 45 have a type of MSK condition. MSK conditions are often associated with other health related conditions. Despite the increasing demand for holistic well-being solutions, the wellness industry remains scattered, with less than 100 companies addressing these specific needs. The surge in virtual wellness tools, particularly in the realm of digital physical therapy, reflects a positive shift towards more accessible and personalized healthcare. However, a key problem persists — the lack of true technological innovation and integration in the marketplace. Existing companies focusing on digital physical therapy often fall short by providing limited technology and a narrow focus on specific body parts or complaints, rather than addressing the individual as a whole. The isolated nature of these technologies, lacking integration with a comprehensive wellness or physician approach, hinders the industry’s potential for delivering truly effective and holistic solutions. The challenge ahead lies in bridging this gap and fostering innovative approaches that prioritize the complete well-being of individuals in the MSK wellness space with advanced technology.

How do you think your technology can address this?

Segen-Health emerges as the solution to the fragmented landscape of the Musculoskeletal (MSK) wellness industry, offering a pioneering approach that goes beyond basic tracking and addresses the holistic well-being of individuals. Our focus on advanced biometric monitoring and true integration with partner platforms will set us apart as leaders in the evolving wellness market. Segen’s proprietary biometric sensors, seamlessly integrate into our high-quality application, enabling a Total Mind Body Approach, breaking away from the limited focus on specific aspects of health. Our emphasis on MSK conditions and the innovative use of bio sensors, coupled with seamless integration into our app, will make Segen’s approach both unique and impactful. What truly distinguishes us is the fusion of customized patient interaction with a fitness platform, featuring live virtual classes, a video fitness library, and physical portals, customized monitoring and feedback coupled with specific home based biometric sensors. Moreover, our outcome value-based model of care combines high-tech solutions with seamless integration, showing tangible benefits such as cost savings on unnecessary surgeries, procedures, and medications. Furthermore, in response to the pervasive difficulty in addressing MSK conditions, Segen-Health introduces groundbreaking technology, bridging the gap by enabling accurate care at home. Our comprehensive app, coupled with physician oversight, transforms the landscape of MSK condition diagnosis and management, positioning Segen-Health as a trailblazer in reshaping the future of wellness.

Can you tell us the backstory about what inspired you to originally feel passionate about this cause?

My entire career has been dedicated to advancing technology for the improved diagnosis and care of soft tissue injuries. Recently, a profound realization has led me to advocate for a shift from a reactive to a proactive healthcare approach, moving away from the prevalent disease model. It became evident that the majority of the population is not actively invested in their well-being, addressing conditions only when symptoms arise. This perspective aligns seamlessly with Phil Reaston’s longstanding aspiration to bring technology into homes, providing individuals with the tools to proactively enhance their well-being. Collaborating with Phil and engaging in ongoing discussions with Dr. Imam further fueled my commitment to remodel healthcare, emphasizing proactive rather than reactive strategies. and formed the basis for Segen-Health. Dr. Imam, a true innovator, envisions a future where primary care physician engagement is improved through technology, empowering individuals to take charge of their health. Together, our goal is to enable proactive well-being management, integrating technology, design, AI, and simplicity for cost-effective and sustainable value, with an unwavering emphasis on total health and well-being.

How do you think this might change the world?

Transforming the perspective of healthcare to empower individuals to take responsibility for their well-being is a true game-changer for global health. Shifting towards a holistic approach, where individuals actively engage in self-care to prevent issues and mitigate problems when they arise, transcends mere cost savings. It fosters a profound transformation in the relationship between individuals and their physicians, creating a more collaborative and attuned partnership. The impact of prioritizing health goes beyond the physical realm; feeling better translates into reduced stress and an enhanced emotional sense of well-being. This holistic shift not only saves money on healthcare but also empowers individuals, cultivating a proactive mindset towards their own health. Ultimately, it sets the stage for a healthier and more harmonious global community where well-being is not just a reactive response to illness but a proactive and intentional way of living.

Keeping “Black Mirror” and the “Law of Unintended Consequences” in mind, can you see any potential drawbacks about this technology that people should think more deeply about?

In our technological age, every action and creation carries associated consequences, whether intended or unintended, and this holds particularly true for advancements in technology. The repercussions of our actions often take time to manifest, making them challenging to anticipate, especially during the initial adoption of technology. Examining Segen’s model, the intended outcomes are undeniably beneficial for the population. However, it is crucial to consider the unintended consequence of collecting sensitive protected health information, particularly biometric data. The realm of biometric data is relatively new in the field of protected health information, and databases containing substantial amounts of such data may become attractive targets for potential breaches. Additionally, the reliance of artificial intelligence on training data introduces the risk of training bias as an unintended consequence. While these consequences are inherent in the introduction of new technology and AI, they can be mitigated through appropriate data management practices and meticulous training protocols. It underscores the importance of ethical considerations and comprehensive safeguards in the development and implementation of advanced technologies like those employed by Segen-Health.

Based on your experience and success, can you please share “Five things you need to know to successfully create technology that can make a positive social impact”?

In designing new technology, it’s crucial to recognize that there’s no magic bullet, especially with the ever-evolving nature of technology. Each technological innovation serves a specific need, and attempting to create an all-encompassing solution can be impractical. Segen’s strategic focus on Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions exemplifies the effectiveness of targeting specific issues for impactful change, influencing the mind-body connection, and promoting overall well-being. An illustrative example from our exploration of wellness and biometric sensors reveals a request to have MSK sensors function as an all-in-one x-ray and MRI machine. However, the feasibility of such a solution is limited, as there are already excellent technologies tailored to address these specific medical needs. Keeping technology simple is imperative, especially when considering the health-related issues faced by an aging population, such as osteoarthritis. A complex app and bio sensor would be impractical for individuals with limited computer savvy and functionality. Knowing the target market is vital, as exemplified in a conversation with a respected physician, whose 85-year-old mother struggled with the initial online screening questionnaire of a wellness app meant for Medicare compliance. Choosing partners aligned with the vision is equally critical, as demonstrated by Yoga Your Way, our wellness fitness provider, sharing Segen’s core philosophy of health and wellness for every body. Lastly, acknowledging the rapid pace of technological change, developing a product is just the beginning; continuous updates are essential to keep the technology state-of-the-art and relevant in a dynamic landscape.

Can you share a few best practices that you recommend to safeguard your technology or medical devices from hackers?

It is essential with technology, especially biosensors that you use the highest form of end-to-end encryption. Regular security checks and penetration tests are critical as well as staying current with new trends and tools.

If you could tell other young people one thing about why they should consider making a positive impact on our environment or society, like you, what would you tell them?

Absolutely, every individual and every contribution, regardless of size, holds significance in the grand scheme of things. Whether you’re aiming for a major accomplishment or pursuing a modest idea, each positive step forward, every contribution to science, and every act that benefits humanity adds to the collective progress of the universe. The cumulative effect of these endeavors, when taken together, makes a meaningful impact on society. So, don’t hesitate — just start. Begin with small steps, contribute in your own way, and know that your efforts, combined with those of others, contribute to the positive evolution of our world. Every positive action, no matter how small, contributes to the greater good and shapes the fabric of our shared human experience.

Is there a person in the world, or in the US with whom you would like to have a private breakfast or lunch, and why? He or she might just see this, especially if we tag them. :-)

Having a private breakfast or lunch with Michelle Obama would be an absolute honor for me. She embodies everything I stand for — integrity, education, wisdom, and kindness. Michelle Obama serves as a continual inspiration to people, particularly women, with her impactful agenda. I deeply admire her not only for her accomplishments but also for the positive influence she has had on society. Sharing a meal with her would be an incredible opportunity to learn from her experiences, gain insights into leadership and advocacy, and further align my values with the principles she represents. Michelle Obama’s enduring impact on individuals and communities has left an indelible mark, and having a personal conversation with her would be a cherished experience.
