Enjoy learning about others: The best networking conversations stem from genuine interest in a person’s background and profession. Don’t be afraid of asking questions. Connect by exchanging contact information or social media profiles, such as LinkedIn.

The art of networking is pivotal in today’s interconnected world. Establishing meaningful connections can accelerate career growth, foster collaborations, and create opportunities that might otherwise remain hidden. Yet, the dynamics of networking are intricate, often requiring a nuanced blend of authenticity, strategy, and adaptability. And with the digital revolution, networking has transcended beyond face-to-face interactions to virtual platforms, expanding its scope and complexity. In this series, we would like to discuss the art and science behind effective networking. We are talking to seasoned professionals, career coaches, networking experts, and thought leaders who’ve mastered both traditional and online networking techniques. As part of this series, we had the pleasure of interviewing Angedith Poggi.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series. Before we dive into our discussion about networking, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share with us the backstory about what brought you to your specific career path?

After finishing my doctoral degree, I realized I could leverage my experience, knowledge and skills to help others. Although earning a doctoral degree is undoubtedly challenging, I truly enjoyed my academic journey. It is disheartening to see many students start but not being able to finish due to various circumstances, such as financial and time constraints. Also, I understand the numerous factors that hinder students, especially Hispanic first-generation students, from pursuing higher education degrees.

That’s where I come in. I help students who lack skills, such as academic writing, research methodology, and data analysis, which are key components for academic success. As someone passionate about my profession and enriched by every academic experience, I’m driven to help others achieve the same fulfillment. Therefore, as an academic and professional mentor, I guide first-generation doctoral students towards their academic and professional goals through mentoring programs and interactive workshops.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?

Connecting with other entrepreneurs has definitely been an interesting experience. As a STEM professional, I was accustomed to attending national conferences and networking with colleagues to share impactful research findings. However, as a solopreneur, I also attend business conferences to learn from others and expand my knowledge in sales and strategies.

After participating in a program for aspiring authors, I had the remarkable opportunity to contribute a chapter to a book authored by two of my mentors, Vilma Nunez and Ismael Cala, who are well-known in the Hispanic community. As I continue to learn from them, it is incredibly rewarding to say that I’ve co-authored a book with these respected figures. .

You are a successful business leader. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?

While many character traits contribute to success, I believe being a lifelong learner, maintaining strong commitment, and having effective communication are key to success.

  1. Lifelong learner — I am constantly immersed in learning about business, marketing and sales. As a subject matter expert, I am focused on helping clients achieve their goals; however,I recognize that running a business requires marketing and sales. I actively learn and implement effective strategies.
  2. Commitment — As a solo entrepreneur, I am committed to providing high-quality service. My role as a mentor requires touchpoints and direct support for clients. I am deeply committed to my mission of increasing the Latino representation in academic and professional sectors.
  3. Effective communication — Honestly, I can’t do everything alone. Hiring contractors for specific projects requires clear, concise communication of instructions, guidelines, and deadlines. In addition, strong negotiation skills are crucial in business, securing the best offers and proposals.

Ok, thank you for that. Let’s now jump to the primary focus of our interview. Let’s begin with a basic definition so that we are all on the same page. How exactly do you define “Networking?” Is it just about meeting new people?

It is funny that you say “it is just about meeting people”. Many people have the misconception that networking is just about collecting business cards or exchanging contact information. Networking is truly about finding the right people for the right opportunities.

In today’s digital age, how important is face-to-face networking, and how do you balance it with online networking?

Networking is crucial regardless of the modality. Face-to-face networking remains highly important, and I strongly recommend it when possible. While meeting people at events can be intimidating, it is an excellent opportunity to develop effective communication skills. Online networking also offers significant advantages, allowing you to meet and connect with like-minded individuals from the comfort of your home.

How do you maintain and nurture professional relationships over time, both in person and online, to ensure they remain fruitful and mutually beneficial?

This is an excellent question, one I often ponder myself. I am particularly intrigued by the authenticity in long-standing relationships. For example, when I return to my hometown for the holidays, there’s no need to apologize to friends and colleagues for periods without communication. This is the privilege of friendships forged through shared experiences, like growing up together, attending the same schools and colleges, etc. !

However, the professional setting is markedly different. Without consistently nurturing new relationships, you cannot expect to have a genuine connection with your professional colleagues or network. It is crucial to invest effort in building a solid foundation with like-minded individuals who may prove valuable in your network.

How important is personal branding when it comes to successful networking, and how can individuals develop and maintain a strong personal brand both online and in person?

Personal branding defines who you are as an individual. Your hairstyle, makeup, and outfit all contribute to this image; like it or not, these elements will elicit judgment. Humans inherently have biases so your personal branding is not just appearance, but also about your level of confidence. This is important because effective personal branding helps you become memorable.

What is your advice for young professionals who are just starting to build their network? How can they effectively reach out to and connect with experienced leaders in their field?

Not only join a professional organization in your field, but also serve in volunteer roles within these organizations. Attend virtual and in-person events, national conferences, and local networking events. Join groups with common interests. For example, if you are a DataScientist who uses Python, join Python communities and groups to learn from others and expand your network. You can do this on social platforms such as Discord, Facebook, LinkedIn, Quora, and Reddit.

Do you prioritize quality or quantity of connections? How do you determine when to invest more time in a particular relationship?

I strongly believe in prioritizing quality over quantity for personal matters, such as friendships and time spent with beloved family members and friends. However, I’ve also recognized the importance of quantity over quality when working in high-demand environments focused on production. Although quantity may be preferred, quality should never be entirely sacrificed. As a perfectionist, quality over quantity remains my preferred motto.

What are your “5 Strategies for Successful Networking, Both Online and Offline”?

Networking can be intimidating for many individuals, but it is important to understand its benefits and how meeting new people may open doors to new opportunities. For introverts, like myself, networking can be exhausting as it requires a lot of energy to actively engage in conversations with new people. Moreover, without effective networking strategies, these initial connections may not lead to lasting relationships.

Here are my 5 strategies for successful networking:

1. Understand your why: Clarify your reasons for wanting to meet new people.

2. Do your research: Familiarize yourself with the professional backgrounds of people you may encounter at the event, if possible.

3. Dress for success: First impressions matter, so wear something that gives you confidence and comfort.

4. Enjoy learning about others: The best networking conversations stem from genuine interest in a person’s background and profession. Don’t be afraid of asking questions. Connect by exchanging contact information or social media profiles, such as LinkedIn.

5. Follow-up: After a great conversation, you may discover common passions or interests. If you believe the relationship is worth establishing, follow up via email.

What role does diversity and inclusion play in your networking approach? How do you ensure that your network is inclusive and represents a broad range of perspectives and backgrounds?

As a Latina and bilingual professional, I recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion. I am often aware that I might be the only person of my background in a professional setting. Actively engaging in organizations that promote diversity and inclusion, and where I feel represented, empowers me to advocate for myself and others. This engagement fosters a more equitable environment across all aspects of my career.

You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-)

Quality education that promotes critical thinking and problem solving is crucial. Unfortunately, we are living in a world full of first-world problems with seemingly simple solutions. Technological advances are making people increasingly dependent on devices and apps, instead of relying on their own understanding or knowledge. I believe critical thinking and problem solving skills can bridge the gap between technology and human capability. By refining these skills, we can leverage technology’s power to augment our knowledge and abilities, rather than replace them.
