As a part of our series about Inspirational Women In Hollywood, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Daniela Lugo.

Daniela Lugo is a bilingual Latina actress and filmmaker born and raised in Mexico City, founder of Lugo Films. From a very young age, in 2013, she began studying acting, film, singing, and dancing. It was in 2016 when she discovered her desire to become a filmmaker while working on the Oscar-winning film “Roma,” directed by the incredible Alfonso Cuarón. She moved to New York at the age of 18 to pursue her career in acting and film, where she studied at prestigious institutions such as The American Academy of Dramatic Arts (Class of 2022), Stella Adler (Class of 2019), Broadway Dance Center (ISVP), and Steps on Broadway.
Daniela has performed at the incredible Carnegie Hall in New York City, as well as the amazing Bellas Artes in Mexico City. Active in the production of short films in her home country and in the United States, she currently resides in Los Angeles, California. There, she has shared the screen with Hollywood stars such as Bella Thorne and JLo, among others, and has played various roles in theater, television, and the film industry, including her off-Broadway debut in 2023 in the play “Octopus in its Own Ink” All of this in a relatively short period of time.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Our readers would love to get to know you a bit better. Can you tell us the story of how you grew up?

I hail from Mexico City, Mexico, where I spent my formative years surrounded by love from my parents, siblings, extended family, and friends.

Throughout my life, my family has consistently shown unwavering support for my aspirations. One particularly memorable moment from my past is the premiere of “High School Musical” in 2006. At that time, I took the initiative to organize and produce concerts for my family. Every Friday, I would invite school friends to join, assuming the role of director for the entire “High School Musical” performance. In the past, I took on the role of Sharpay Evans, sharing the stage with my charming Yorkshire Terrier, Bolton. These treasured memories will always have a special place in my heart.

My family served as the most enthusiastic and appreciative audience I could have wished for. To this day, they remain my most incredible supporters, cheering me on in all my pursuits.

Can you share a story with us about what brought you to this specific career path?

From the tender age of eight, the enchantment of the performing arts has been a constant companion in my life. I vividly recall the transformative moment when I first experienced “The Phantom of the Opera” in London’s Piccadilly Circus. Right then and there, I recognized that acting would be the central focus of my life, igniting a profound passion within me.

Following this moment of realization, I swiftly enrolled in classes covering dance, singing, and acting at various studios. My goal was crystal clear: to establish the foundation for a potential career in the expansive world of the performing arts.

Can you tell us the most interesting story that happened to you since you began your career?

At the age of 15, I was presented with an extraordinary opportunity to make my debut in the acclaimed film “Roma,” directed by the renowned Alfonso Cuarón. Despite my role being relatively minor, the experience proved to be immensely valuable.

I distinctly remember being deeply inspired after just my second day on set. The overall atmosphere, the committed crew, the talented cast, and, notably, Alfonso Cuarón himself, left a lasting impression on me. It was during that moment that I made a pivotal decision: I was determined to pursue a career as a filmmaker.

It has been said that our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

At the age of 13, I was granted an amazing opportunity to participate in a dance class led by Broadway star Bianca Marroquin. Inside the dance studio, I felt an overwhelming sense of determination, as if I needed to prove myself and make a lasting impression on Bianca. Eager to dance alongside her, I consistently vied for a spot in the front row.

During one of the dance sequences, however, I unexpectedly stumbled and fell. While Bianca may not have noticed, my classmates certainly did. To my surprise, instead of laughter or mockery, they immediately rushed to assist me in getting back on my feet and continuing the dance. I didn’t shed tears, but I felt a deep sense of embarrassment, knowing my misstep had unintentionally become visible to everyone.

What resonated most with me in that moment was the genuine kindness and support from my classmates. They commended me for persevering and not giving up. It proved to be a valuable lesson that has remained with me throughout my entire career.

That day, I grasped the significance of humility. I came to understand that it’s not about being the most skilled or the best in the room, but rather about being authentic, kind, and true to oneself. By cultivating positive relationships with those around you and staying grounded, you can navigate your journey toward your goals with grace and enjoyment. While I may not have been the top dancer in that studio, that experience imparted one of the most significant lessons in my career.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

My parents serve as an extraordinary wellspring of inspiration in my life. Since the inception of my ambitious dream to relocate to the US and pursue my passions, they have remained steadfastly supportive. Their commitment has been boundless, as evidenced by their attendance at all my theatre classes, assistance with audition preparation, and collaborative efforts in planning my itinerary and setting goals in the US. In essence, they have been my unwavering pillars of support in every conceivable manner.

I wholeheartedly consider my parents to be the epitome of parental excellence. Without their steadfast backing, there were moments when I may have faltered, and I would not have achieved the milestones I’ve reached today. They are my bedrock, my guiding lights, and my everything. Their boundless love and encouragement have played an indispensable role in shaping my journey and fostering my success.

You have been blessed with great success in a career path that can be challenging. Do you have any words of advice for others who may want to embark on this career path, but seem daunted by the prospect of failure?

It may sound cliché, but it’s a fundamental truth: if you don’t take risks, you’ll never achieve success. If no one else is betting on you and your work, you have to bet on yourself and your efforts. Seek and create your own opportunities. You can’t just sit at home waiting for miracles to happen.

Every industry iterates and seeks improvement. What changes would you like to see in the industry going forward?

I’m hopeful for a significant shift towards greater ethnic diversity in the industry. I, as a Latina filmmaker and actress in Hollywood, I concluded that It’s crucial to move beyond stereotypes and provide opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds to share their stories authentically. This can be accomplished by actively promoting diverse talents, both in front of and behind the camera, and actively seeking out narratives from underrepresented communities.

You have such impressive work. What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now? Where do you see yourself heading from here?

I am thrilled to announce that my new project just premiered at the majestic World Trade Center in Mexico City. This project, which I produced in my home country, Mexico, is set to premiere worldwide next month. This project holds immense significance for me because it’s not only based on true events but also carries a message that I believe needs to be heard.

The journey of creating this film has been unlike any other in my ten years of experience. It has imparted invaluable life lessons, and I’ve grown in ways I never anticipated. The story itself and the incredible cast and crew have been my greatest teachers.

What made this project even more special is that it was a collaboration with talented individuals from Mexico, my home country. Working with my own people in my own country was a profoundly beautiful experience. It felt like we were building a close-knit family, united by our shared passion for storytelling. And this is just the beginning; we aspire to create more compelling stories in the future.

Additionally, I have another project in the pipeline titled ‘WIFI DATE.’ It’s currently in post-production, and I’m confident it will bring laughter. Furthermore, I have two upcoming projects — one, a comedy in Mexico, and the other, a thriller in LA. There’s also another project in the works that will be a Manifest. We are very interested in looking at diversity in the entertainment industry. Can you share three reasons with our readers why you think it’s important to have diversity represented in film and television? How can that potentially affect our culture and our youth growing up today?

1. The significance of representation in today’s world cannot be overstated. Growing up in Mexico, I had limited options when it came to Disney princesses who looked like me. I distinctly remember having Dora the Explorer as the sole character that resembled my background. While it was a positive representation, it was quite confined. Nowadays, it fills me with immense joy to witness young Latina girls dressing up as characters from a more diverse range, exclaiming, “That character looks like me!” I hope this trend continues for the benefit of future generations.
2. Encouraging others to envision themselves in varied situations and experiences is crucial. On-screen representation allows people to connect with characters who share their ethnicity or experiences, serving as a source of inspiration. Every individual on this planet is important, deserving the chance to feel inspired and well-represented without being confined by stereotypes.
3. Representation plays a pivotal role in fostering self-acceptance, both mentally and, significantly, physically. I am thrilled that today’s media landscape showcases a much more diverse cast in every new TV show and movie. All ethnicities, body types, and backgrounds deserve visibility and acceptance for who they are. True representation goes beyond appearances; it nurtures a sense of belonging and self-acceptance for individuals from all walks of life.

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why?

• Rejection should not be taken personally. The entertainment industry is rife with “NOs,” and casting decisions often hinge on specific criteria that may not align with your attributes. Recognize that not landing a role doesn’t imply wrongdoing on your part; it might simply involve a different personality or physical appearance being sought for that particular role. Stay resilient and persistently pursue your goals with determination.

• Prioritize actions aligned with your own aspirations, not just to impress others. When you operate from a place of authenticity, your passion naturally radiates.
• Embrace challenges and take calculated risks. No one comprehends your capabilities better than you do. Investing in your career and seizing every opportunity that arises can lead to unexpected breakthroughs.
• In the entertainment industry, humility and kindness carry considerable weight. It’s an extensive yet interconnected realm, and you never know who you might encounter or who might become the next Oscar winner. Cultivating humility and kindness not only nurtures positive relationships but also leaves a lasting impression.

Can you share with our readers any self-care routines, practices or treatments that you do to help your body, mind or heart to thrive?

I firmly believe in adopting a holistic approach to self-care that addresses the well-being of my body, mind, and heart. When it comes to my body, I prioritize regular exercise, incorporating activities like yoga or going to the gym into my routine. This not only helps maintain physical fitness but also provides a significant mental boost, also it helps me with my anxiety.

For my mind, daily meditation is a non-negotiable practice. Taking a few moments each day to center myself through meditation aids in maintaining focus and clarity. It serves as a grounding ritual amid life’s demands. Journaling is a powerful exercise for my mind. I reflect on daily experiences, expressing gratitude and setting intentions. An anecdote involves a challenging day on set and rehearsal. Instead of letting stress consume me, I took a break, journaled about the difficulties, and it provided a mental release. Also, spending quality time with my two yorkies, Naya and Horus.

Nurturing my heart involves dedicating quality time to loved ones. One particularly memorable story revolves around a spontaneous trip with my family and friends. Surrounded by nature, (going to the beach, hiking, etc.) we shared moments of laughter and joy. This impromptu trip became a refreshing reset for all of us, reinforcing the importance of connecting with loved ones for emotional well-being.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

In the past couple of years, “No risk, no win” has become the guiding principle of my journey. Over time, I have delved into various ventures filled with uncertainty, and surprisingly, many of them have paved the way to significant opportunities on prominent sets. Frequently, fear emerges as our most formidable adversary, but once you conquer that inner voice whispering, “don’t do it, you’re not enough,” you find yourself on the path to triumph.

While seeking comfort in familiar spaces is entirely natural, the entertainment industry, in particular, demands that we embrace risks. Life is fleeting, and it is more gratifying to proudly declare, “I did it” or “I tried,” than to dwell on “what if.” Taking chances and stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to extraordinary accomplishments and experiences, and it is a motto that has defined my actions throughout the last couple of years.

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be?

This question prompts deep reflection, and the initial idea that comes to mind is the vital importance of promoting awareness around mental health. In the contemporary world, it is absolutely essential for individuals to feel at ease expressing their thoughts and emotions openly. When faced with isolation or overwhelming feelings, seeking help should be viewed as a commendable and courageous choice. There are instances when our environment becomes toxic, and seeking assistance becomes necessary to confront and overcome the negativity that may arise within our own minds.

Although it presents challenges, if I were fortunate enough to possess significant resources, I would opt to invest in initiatives dedicated to advancing the cause of Mental Health Movements. My aim is to witness people leading happier lives. As mentioned earlier, life is a precious and finite journey, and everyone deserves the chance to experience a life that they find fulfilling and enjoyable.

Is there a person in the world whom you would love to have lunch with, and why? Maybe we can tag them and see what happens!

The prospect of sharing a lunch with Salma Hayek is an absolute dream for me. She not only stands as one of my favorite idols but also serves as an immense source of inspiration. If I were fortunate enough to experience such a moment, I would enhance the occasion by bringing mimosas to add an extra touch of specialness. During our time together, my heart would be filled with questions and overwhelming gratitude.

Salma Hayek’s impact on the entertainment industry, particularly for Latinos, has been nothing short of monumental. I would express my profound appreciation to her for breaking barriers and paving the way for numerous aspiring Latino actors in Hollywood. Her journey has undeniably opened doors and created opportunities for others, myself included, who aspire to make their mark in this industry.

Our lunch would undoubtedly be a deeply inspiring and connecting experience, and I would treasure every moment of it.
