By staying away from negativity and cultivating a network of supportive, constructive individuals, I’ve been able to pursue my goals more effectively and maintain a healthier, more fulfilling life. This quote serves as a reminder that the company we keep significantly impacts our mindset and overall well-being.

As a part of our series called ‘Five Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Became A CEO’ we had the pleasure of interviewing James Krouse.

James Krouse, the visionary Founder of Flower Power Genetics, a trailblazing entity shaping the landscape of cannabis cultivation. With a steadfast commitment to preserving the authenticity and therapeutic essence of original strains, Flower Power Genetics stands as a beacon of innovation in the ever-evolving cannabis industry.

Flower Power Genetics is not just a company; it’s a testament to Krouse’s dedication to reintroducing the world to the purebred cannabis strains that defined an era. In a market saturated with hybridization and prioritization of THC content, Krouse and his team have meticulously curated a collection of original cannabis genetics and High Times Cannabis Cup-winning seeds from the competition’s inaugural decade. This, coupled with premium landrace and F1 hybrid seeds, forms the foundation of Flower Power Genetics’ mission to revolutionize health and well-being through authentic cannabis genetics.

James Krouse’s journey into the cannabis realm is underscored by his extensive background in IT project management, honed during his tenure at esteemed organizations like Baltimore Gas & Electric, Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, and the Department of Energy. Armed with a degree in IFSM and a slew of high-level IT and management certifications, Krouse brings a unique blend of expertise to the cannabis space, bridging the gap between technology and cultivation.

Through meticulous genetic preservation and innovative breeding techniques, Flower Power Genetics is pioneering a new era in medicinal cannabis. With a focus on quality, authenticity, and the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids beyond THC, the company is poised to redefine the standards of excellence in the cannabis cultivation landscape.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dig in, our readers would like to get to know you a bit more. Can you tell us a bit about your “backstory”? What led you to this particular career path?

Thank you for welcoming me! My relationship with cannabis dates back to my teenage years, where I first encountered its calming effects amidst the typical stresses of adolescence. However, as I transitioned into adulthood, my use of cannabis became less frequent, aligning with the demands of college and early career pursuits.

It wasn’t until later in life, amidst my professional endeavors, that my interest in cannabis was reignited, albeit under less fortunate circumstances. Following a diagnosis of stage two melanoma, I sought relief from the symptoms and side effects of my condition, leading me to explore cannabis as a potential remedy. Obtaining a medical card, I embarked on a journey to find solace in cannabis once again.

To my disappointment, the cannabis landscape had evolved significantly since my earlier encounters. The focus seemed to have shifted predominantly towards amplifying THC levels, overlooking the diverse range of medicinal properties inherent in the plant’s cannabinoids. This realization served as a pivotal moment, propelling me to advocate for a more balanced and nuanced approach to cannabis consumption and product development.

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

Certainly! Those are some amusing anecdotes that highlight the learning curve in the cannabis industry. The first story, about the priceless seeds, reflects a common misunderstanding about the value of intellectual property in the cannabis market. It’s a funny reminder that not all valuable assets have a straightforward price tag and underscores the importance of understanding the nuances of intellectual property and patents in the industry.

The second story, regarding the misunderstanding of business terms, is a humorous illustration of the diverse backgrounds and experiences of individuals entering the cannabis space. It underscores the need for clear communication and mutual understanding when navigating partnerships and business arrangements, especially in an industry where terminology may vary widely.

Both stories emphasize the importance of education, clear communication, and humility when starting out in the cannabis industry. They serve as lighthearted reminders to approach challenges with curiosity, adaptability, and a good sense of humor.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

I completely agree that none of us achieve success in isolation. Throughout my life, I’ve been fortunate to have encountered numerous individuals who have played pivotal roles in shaping my journey and guiding me towards where I am today. While there are many mentors and influencers who have contributed to my growth, I must express my deepest gratitude to my close family and friends.

From the earliest days of my journey, my family has been my unwavering support system, providing encouragement, wisdom, and love every step of the way. Their belief in me, even during times of uncertainty, has been a constant source of strength and motivation. Whether it was my parents instilling in me a strong work ethic or my siblings cheering me on through life’s challenges, their presence has been instrumental in shaping my character and aspirations.

Likewise, my circle of friends has been an invaluable source of support and inspiration. Their friendship, camaraderie, and shared experiences have enriched my life in countless ways. Through their diverse perspectives, thoughtful advice, and unwavering encouragement, they have challenged me to grow, learn, and strive for excellence in all that I do.

While I’ve had the privilege of learning from many mentors and role models throughout my journey, it is the unwavering support and encouragement of my close family and friends that have been the cornerstone of my success. Their belief in me, their guidance, and their love have been the driving forces behind my accomplishments, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Leadership often entails making difficult decisions or hard choices between two apparently good paths. Can you share a story with us about a hard decision or choice you had to make as a leader?

As a leader, I’ve encountered numerous challenging decisions that have tested my resolve and strategic vision. One particularly difficult choice arose when I was navigating the path to market with my products. At the core of this decision was the question of whether to pursue a business-to-consumer (B2C) or a business-to-business (B2B) model.

On one hand, the allure of establishing a direct-to-consumer brand held significant appeal. It offered the potential to position my products as the Coca-Cola of cannabis, building a recognizable and coveted brand in the industry. However, as I delved deeper into the complexities of the market landscape and assessed our long-term objectives, I realized that the B2B route aligned more closely with our strategic goals.

The decision to pivot towards a B2B model was not made lightly. It required careful consideration of various factors, including market dynamics, resource allocation, and scalability. Ultimately, I recognized that by adopting a B2B approach, we could leverage our expertise, resources, and extensive seed inventory to empower other brands to flourish in the cannabis space.

While the allure of building a consumer-facing brand was undeniable, I understood that our true potential lay in enabling and supporting the growth of a diverse ecosystem of cannabis brands. By prioritizing collaboration and partnership over individual brand dominance, we could maximize our impact and contribute to the overall advancement of the industry.

Though the decision posed its share of challenges and uncertainties, I remain confident that choosing the B2B path was the right strategic move for our long-term success. It allowed us to focus on what we do best — innovating, cultivating, and providing high-quality products — while fostering a thriving ecosystem of cannabis brands poised for growth and success.

Ok, thank you for that. Let’s now jump to the primary focus of our interview. Most of our readers — in fact, most people — think they have a pretty good idea of what a CEO or executive does. But in just a few words can you explain what an executive does that is different from the responsibilities of the other leaders?

Many individuals often have a general perception of what a CEO or executive’s role entails. However, the distinction lies in the multifaceted responsibilities that set executives apart from other leaders within an organization.

At its essence, the role of a CEO or executive extends far beyond the stereotypical image of high-paid individuals attending meetings. It encompasses a comprehensive spectrum of duties, with communication and strategic decision-making standing at the forefront. As the driving force behind the company’s vision and goals, executives are tasked with orchestrating seamless coordination across all facets of the business.

This entails setting clear milestones, charting the course for success, and making crucial decisions about when to pivot or adapt strategies in response to evolving market dynamics. Moreover, executives play a pivotal role in ensuring alignment among team members, fostering a cohesive environment where everyone works in unison toward shared objectives.

What are the “myths” that you would like to dispel about being a CEO or executive? Can you explain what you mean?

Contrary to common misconceptions, the role of a CEO or executive is not merely about collecting hefty paychecks. It’s about shouldering the weight of leadership and stewarding the organization toward its overarching vision. This involves navigating intricate boardroom discussions, synthesizing vast amounts of data, and actively listening to insights from team members at all levels of the organization.

Effective leadership hinges on the ability to absorb diverse perspectives, including constructive criticism and unwelcome news, without hesitation. By fostering an environment of open communication and collaboration, executives can harness the collective intelligence of their teams to make informed decisions that propel the company forward.

In essence, being a CEO or executive is about more than just being at the top of the hierarchy — it’s about steering the ship through turbulent waters, charting a course toward success, and empowering every individual within the organization to contribute to its collective journey.

What is the most striking difference between your actual job and how you thought the job would be?

The most striking difference between my actual job and how I initially perceived it lies in the sheer volume of meetings and communication involved. While I anticipated making high-level decisions and overseeing various aspects of the business, I didn’t fully grasp the extent to which my role would revolve around coordination and interaction.

In reality, a significant portion of my day is dedicated to aligning the efforts of different teams, fostering collaboration, and ensuring everyone is on the same page. This entails frequent meetings, discussions, and communication channels that I hadn’t anticipated would consume such a large portion of my time.

While I recognized the importance of communication in leadership, I didn’t fully appreciate the extent to which it would be integral to my role. However, I’ve come to realize that effective coordination and clear communication are essential for driving the organization forward and achieving our collective goals.

Thus, while the prevalence of meetings may have initially surprised me, I’ve come to appreciate their significance in facilitating collaboration, decision-making, and ultimately, the success of the organization.

Do you think everyone is cut out to be an executive? In your opinion, which specific traits increase the likelihood that a person will be a successful executive and what type of person should avoid aspiring to be an executive? Can you explain what you mean?

No, I don’t believe everyone is cut out to be an executive. Executives possess a distinct set of traits and characteristics that enable them to thrive in leadership roles. One of the key traits is the ability to remain calm and composed under pressure. Executives often face challenging situations and complex decisions, and it’s essential to maintain a clear head and make rational choices, even in the midst of turmoil.

Additionally, successful executives are adept at staying focused on the task at hand and navigating through uncertainty. They possess strong decision-making skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to prioritize effectively. These traits enable them to steer their organizations toward their goals with confidence and resilience.

However, not everyone is suited for executive roles. Individuals who struggle to remain calm under pressure, lack strategic thinking skills, or have difficulty making tough decisions may find it challenging to thrive in such positions. Additionally, those who prefer a more hands-on, operational role may not enjoy the strategic and high-level decision-making responsibilities that come with being an executive.

Ultimately, becoming an executive requires a unique combination of skills, traits, and temperament. While some individuals may possess these qualities naturally, others may need to develop them over time through experience, training, and self-awareness.

What advice would you give to other business leaders to help create a fantastic work culture? Can you share a story or an example?

One piece of advice I would offer to other business leaders seeking to create a fantastic work culture is to prioritize listening to your team members. It’s essential to understand their perspectives, challenges, and aspirations by putting yourself in their shoes. By doing so, you can foster an environment of empathy, mutual respect, and trust within the organization.

I firmly believe that open and transparent communication is the cornerstone of a positive work culture. Encouraging your team members to voice their opinions, concerns, and ideas freely can lead to increased engagement, collaboration, and innovation. Moreover, creating a culture where employees feel valued and heard contributes to their overall job satisfaction and loyalty to the organization.

Let me share a story that illustrates the importance of listening and communication in creating a fantastic work culture. In a previous role, I noticed that morale among team members was low, and there was a lack of enthusiasm and motivation in the workplace. Instead of implementing top-down solutions, I decided to hold individual meetings with each team member to understand their perspective.

During these conversations, I discovered that many team members felt overwhelmed by their workload and lacked clarity on their roles and responsibilities. They also expressed frustration with the lack of opportunities for professional development and growth within the organization. Armed with this valuable feedback, I initiated several changes, including restructuring workflows, providing additional training and resources, and introducing regular team-building activities.

Over time, these initiatives had a transformative impact on the work culture. Team members felt more empowered, engaged, and supported in their roles, leading to improved collaboration, productivity, and job satisfaction. By actively listening to my team and taking action based on their feedback, we were able to create a work environment where everyone felt valued, respected, and motivated to contribute their best.

How have you used your success to make the world a better place?

I’ve leveraged my success to inspire positive change and empower others to reach their full potential. Through my actions and words, I strive to cultivate a culture of positivity, growth, and resilience. One of the ways I do this is by encouraging people to adopt a positive mindset and set ambitious yet achievable goals for themselves. I firmly believe that positive energy attracts positive outcomes, and by fostering an environment of optimism and determination, I aim to motivate individuals to pursue their dreams with passion and perseverance.

Furthermore, I’m committed to serving as a mentor and role model for those seeking guidance and support on their journey to success. Whether through mentoring programs, motivational speaking engagements, or one-on-one interactions, I strive to impart valuable insights, share personal experiences, and offer encouragement to those facing challenges or obstacles. By sharing my own journey and highlighting the importance of resilience, grit, and hard work, I hope to inspire others to overcome adversity and strive for excellence in their endeavors.

Fantastic. Here is the primary question of our interview. What are your “5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Started” and why? (Please share a story or example for each.)
Reflecting on my journey and success, I’ve identified several ways in which I’ve strive to make the world a better place:

  1. Promoting Transparency and Integrity: Recognizing the importance of honesty and transparency in all interactions, I’ve made it a priority to foster an environment of trust and integrity within my professional and personal relationships. By advocating for open communication and accountability, I aim to create spaces where individuals feel empowered to share their perspectives and ideas freely.
  2. Investing in Education and Mentorship: Believing in the power of education and mentorship to unlock potential and drive positive change, I’ve been actively involved in initiatives aimed at supporting aspiring entrepreneurs and professionals. Whether through mentoring programs, workshops, or educational initiatives, I’m committed to providing guidance, resources, and opportunities for growth to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  3. Advocating for Diversity and Inclusion: Embracing the value of diversity and inclusion in driving innovation and success, I’ve championed initiatives focused on promoting diversity in the workplace and beyond. By advocating for equitable hiring practices, fostering inclusive environments, and amplifying underrepresented voices, I strive to create opportunities for all individuals to thrive and contribute to society.
  4. Supporting Sustainable Practices: Recognizing the importance of environmental sustainability in shaping a better future, I’ve been a vocal advocate for sustainable practices in business and everyday life. Whether through implementing eco-friendly policies in my own ventures, supporting organizations dedicated to environmental conservation, or raising awareness about pressing environmental issues, I’m committed to fostering a greener and more sustainable world.
  5. Giving Back to the Community: Acknowledging the privilege and opportunities afforded by success, I’ve made it a priority to give back to the community and support causes close to my heart. Whether through volunteering, charitable donations, or active participation in community initiatives, I strive to make a meaningful and positive impact on the lives of others, leaving a lasting legacy of compassion, generosity, and service.

You are a person of great influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good for the greatest number of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger.

A movement I’d like to inspire would be one that fosters a world of peace, love, and mutual respect. In today’s society, where divisions and conflicts often overshadow our common humanity, it’s crucial to remember that we’re all in this together. Despite our differences, we share many of the same experiences and challenges in life.

At the heart of this movement would be the idea of promoting empathy and understanding among individuals from all walks of life. By encouraging people to listen to each other’s stories and perspectives, we can build bridges of compassion and reduce the prevalence of hate and prejudice.

I also believe that the cannabis community has a unique role to play in this vision. Cannabis, particularly in its traditional, “old school” form, has long been associated with relaxation, creativity, and a sense of camaraderie. By advocating for the responsible and mindful use of cannabis, we can contribute to a culture of peace and well-being. Cannabis can serve as a tool to bring people together, facilitate open conversations, and foster a sense of unity.

Furthermore, the movement would focus on education and destigmatization. It’s essential to educate people about the benefits of cannabis, not just for recreational use, but also for its medicinal properties. This includes advocating for research into its potential to treat various mental health conditions, which can significantly improve individuals’ quality of life and contribute to overall societal harmony.

The movement I envision is one where empathy, understanding, and love are at the forefront. By leveraging the positive aspects of cannabis culture, we can promote a more peaceful and compassionate world. This movement would encourage people to embrace their shared humanity, reduce hate, and work together to create a better future for everyone.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

One of my favorite life lesson quotes is, “Stay away from negative people. They have a problem for every solution.” — Albert Einstein.

This quote has been particularly relevant in my life as it underscores the importance of surrounding oneself with positive influences. I’ve found that negative people can often drain energy and stifle creativity and progress. Their constant focus on problems rather than solutions can create an environment of pessimism and doubt.

For me, embracing this lesson meant consciously choosing to spend more time with individuals who inspire and uplift me. Positive people tend to approach challenges with a solutions-oriented mindset, which not only fosters personal growth but also encourages collaborative and innovative thinking. This shift in my social environment has allowed me to maintain a more optimistic outlook and remain motivated even in the face of difficulties.

By staying away from negativity and cultivating a network of supportive, constructive individuals, I’ve been able to pursue my goals more effectively and maintain a healthier, more fulfilling life. This quote serves as a reminder that the company we keep significantly impacts our mindset and overall well-being.

We are very blessed that some very prominent names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US with whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this if we tag them.

I would love to have breakfast or lunch with Warren Buffett. As one of the most successful investors of all time, Warren Buffett’s insights and wisdom on business, investing, and life are invaluable. His long-term, value-oriented approach to investing has not only led to incredible financial success but has also demonstrated the importance of patience, discipline, and ethical decision-making in business.

What fascinates me most about Warren Buffett is his ability to simplify complex financial concepts and make them accessible to everyone. He has a knack for distilling decades of experience and knowledge into practical advice that can benefit both novice and seasoned investors.

His philanthropic efforts, particularly through The Giving Pledge, where he has committed to giving away the majority of his wealth, highlight his dedication to making a positive impact on the world. Having the opportunity to discuss with Warren Buffett would be an extraordinary experience.

I’d also love to learn more about his thought process, how he evaluates investment opportunities, and his perspectives on the current economic landscape. Additionally, I’d be interested in hearing his views on leadership, personal development, and the role of business in society. It would be a privilege to gain insights from someone who has not only achieved remarkable success but has also remained grounded and committed to making a difference.
