As part of my interview series on the five things you need to know to become a great author, I had the pleasure of interviewing John Dougherty. John Dougherty first started his career as a primary school teacher, before moving on to discover his passion of writing stories, songs and poetry for children. Recently, his book The Hare-Shaped Hole, illustrated by Tom Docherty, was one of five picture books shortlisted for this year’s Oscar’s Book Prize. Founded in memory of Oscar Ashton, who passed away aged three-and-a-half from an undetected heart condition, the Prize is supported by Amazon, and seeks to find the best children’s picture book.

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you share a story about what brought you to this particular career path?

Thanks for having me! There are a lot of stories I could tell you, but one of the many defining moments came when I decided to train to be a teacher. Before the course began, I had to spend two weeks observing teachers in a local school, and on day one the Deputy Head said to me, “If you’re going to teach children, you need to know children’s books — not just know about them, but really know them,” and…
