Katie McCleary of 916 Ink: Five Things Business Leaders Can Do To Create A Fantastic Work Culture

Understand that culture is an iterative dynamic that often emanates from the personality, style, skills, and values of the leaders at the top. Look in the mirror often, invest in understanding yourself at such a deep level that you can manage yourself (language, presence, attitude, etc.) at all times and set an example. And know that not everyone is like you or has the same preferences. Learn how to maneuver through an ever-shifting landscape by showing up authentically and openly.

  1. An appetite for engaging in and teaching personal and professional development;
  2. A skill set of knowing how to communicate through writing, storytelling, and public speaking;
  3. A desire to execute upon this essential idea: “all people are capable, can fulfill their purpose, and rise through anything with the right support.”
  1. Respected,
  2. Accepted, and/or
  3. Valued.

  • Intentionally co-create with all staff a set of behaviors and values that everyone in the organization can agree upon, embody, and engage with in a consistent and reliable manner.
  • Act upon infractions right away. Address conflict, miscommunication, bias, and more in real time. Be curious about what shifted and caused the negativity — don’t make assumptions.
  • Be clear about what it means to belong to your organization. Convey your dealbreakers ahead of time so that when someone crosses them or thrashes your values, you’re clear about what happened and why. You show up responsive, instead of reactive.
