Lillee Jean: Five Strategies Our Company Is Using To Tackle Climate Change & Become More Sustainable

I believe becoming more sustainable is a matter of having your moral compass pointing in the right direction. As leaders, it is our responsibility to help make the difference, otherwise there will be no investment in people for the future because climate change is happening at an alarming rate.

As part of my series about how companies are becoming more sustainable, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lillee Jean.

Lillee Jean is a well-known American YouTuber and Instagram digital celebrity, who lives in New York. Her content varies but focuses mainly on beauty, health, and lifestyle tips and tutorials. She also blogs and vlogs on various subjects. You can catch her on her social media channels, as well as her self-produced, IMDB-approved web series, Lillee Jean TALKS! Live on her YouTube Channel, IG TV and website.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I have always enjoyed drawing, painting, and sculpting since I was a child. When I was in my early teens, I became fascinated with makeup tutorials, and loved blending colors, treating the face much as a canvas. The rest as they say is history.

What is the mission of your company? What problems are you aiming to solve?

Lillee Jean is the brand and thus the company is called Lillee Jean Beauty, Inc. Although I am an entertainer, part of the message of my company has been shaped with the purpose of spreading awareness on relevant topics such as climate change and online bullying. Climate change still doesn’t seem so serious to some people, even when you speak about it often. Despite the fact that climate change has accelerated in the last few decades, they have no idea how important it is. Global warming’s biggest enemy is us, and we do not do enough to make a difference. We all need to spread the word and make a difference in order to solve this global problem. With Lillee Jean Beauty, we strive to use things that are sustainable, which includes trying to not use plastic whenever possible, as well as sharing the word with others without being preachy.

Can you tell our readers about the initiatives that you or your company are taking to address climate change or sustainability? Can you give an example for each?

We all take baby steps toward our goals. As much as possible, we try to use sustainable products. For example, when we get together, we use cups and glasses, rather than disposable cups. Reusing paper is a cost-effective way to reduce a business’s environmental footprint. It also contributes to the reduction of their carbon footprint. We even reuse used envelopes for jotting down notes.

How would you articulate how a business can become more profitable by being more sustainable and more environmentally conscious? Can you share a story or example?

I believe becoming more sustainable is a matter of having your moral compass pointing in the right direction. As leaders, it is our responsibility to help make the difference, otherwise there will be no investment in people for the future because climate change is happening at an alarming rate.

The youth led climate strikes of September 2019 showed an impressive degree of activism and initiative by young people on behalf of climate change. This was great, and there is still plenty that needs to be done. In your opinion what are 5 things parents should do to inspire the next generation to become engaged in sustainability and the environmental movement? Please give a story or an example for each.

Simply put, we are change. It is important for parents to have this conversation with their children from a young age, to teach them how to respect and treat our environment. I have a funny story related to this. When my father was a young boy, he and his grandmother went on the Circle Line Boat Trip, in New York City. The passengers were directed to dump any garbage they had in the water, and my dad thought that was rather strange. When he was a child, people thought our planet was a huge dumping ground, and everything was recycled naturally. Our knowledge has changed, and ocean pollution is a serious concern. Marine life is polluted by microplastics, sewage and oil spills, to name a few. In my opinion, it is never too early to start teaching children about the future of our planet, climate change, and protecting our planet.

In my opinion, parents need to start early by educating their children about global warming and lead by example. Children are impressionable and if their parents are doing something, children will definitely follow suit, for instance, just simple things like turning off lights and using cloth bags instead of plastic. The things listed above would have an impact in terms of making a difference.

What are your “5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Started” and why?

In real life, nothing is easy like in the movies. You have to work hard, and when you’re your own boss, you have to work ten times harder. I wish someone had shared their mental journey to success. As a result of our digital society, it is hard to prepare yourself for some of the things we find acceptable nowadays, such as harassment and slander, all done via anonymous people, who mask themselves to not be found. I wish I had prepared myself better for that surprise. Any effort to scrutinize your work, and anything you do remotely, can be viewed negatively by others. As a result, everything I say has to be carefully considered before I say it. Every time someone can share their journey with you, it is essential for your success.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

I am fortunate to have such a good relationship with my parents. Through my journey, they have been supportive of me, and although the road has not been easy, I can always count on them as my biggest supporters.

You are a person of great influence and doing some great things for the world! If you could inspire a movement that would bring the greatest amount of good to the greatest amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-)

It would be great to see people come together more. I think people spend too much time bringing each other down instead of supporting each other, so I wish that we could have a more harmonious world, in which people would eventually respect each other unconditionally.

Do you have a favorite life lesson quote? Can you tell us how that was relevant to you in your own life?

I am a huge Disney princess fan, and one of my most beloved princesses is Mulan. She says in the movie, “The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all”. I love her even more because it embodies what her quote means to me, which is thriving even when adversity confronts you head on.
