Kids Can Handle Hard Things: Children’s author Maurice Sendak said, “I remember my own childhood vividly… I knew terrible things. But I knew I mustn’t let adults know I knew. It would scare them (with Art Spiegelman, 1993). Sendak is spot on. Children see and understand more than adults are aware. This is the case regarding the unhappy truths of American history, current events, and bullying and discrimination within their own school buildings. Our children already see and handle uncomfortable realities. They need support from their adults to make sense of these. Don’t take this from them.

School is really not easy these days. Many students have been out of school for a long time because of the pandemic, and the continued disruptions and anxieties are still breaking the flow of normal learning.
