Cultivate a variety of professional interests. In addition to being a writer, I am also a photographer and designer.

As part of my interview series on the five things you need to know to become a great author, I had the pleasure of interviewing Martha Retallick.

Martha Retallick is an award-winning photographer, writer, and designer. Her eclectic life experiences include bicycling through all 50 of the United States, plus a bit of Mexico and Canada, and publishing two books about her adventures. In addition, Retallick has helped to produce two different magazines, volunteered to rebuild houses damaged during Hurricane Katrina, and created the urban water harvesting oasis that is featured in her latest book, City Nature.

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you share a story about what brought you to this particular career path?

I’m one of those people who has a good eye for composition and design — and a way with words. Even better, I went to public schools where these gifts were recognized and nurtured early. And now, here I am, a veteran photographer, writer, and designer who has worked professionally in all three of these fields.
