You can’t have beautiful hair without a healthy scalp. So, make sure you nourish it. Just like your skin, your hair needs nourishment. Start out by skipping out on all the harsh ingredients and grab a shampoo that is sulfate-free. Sulfate strips too much moisture from your hair making it dry and unhealthy. Our Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner is made with soy protein & neroli oil and is free of sulfate, parabens, dyes, and mineral oils.

As a part of our series about “Five Things Anyone Can Do To Have Fabulous Hair”, I had the pleasure of interviewing Micaella Mosley, founder of Mila Rose Hair Care.

Inspired by her infant daughter’s dry hair issues and the lack of targeted, natural products on the market, entrepreneur Micaella Mosley, dreamed of crafting a line of chemical- free and organic hair care products that are safe for all hair types and everyone from children to seniors. Now, she’s created an approachable hair care brand built on 2 years of research and education, representing everything needed to help quench thirsty curls. Her company Mila Rose Hair Care caters to curly and textured hair at every stage of your natural hair journey and puts Black women’s haircare needs at the center of product development and Micaella’s overall mission.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Before we dive in, our readers would love to learn a bit more about you. Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you began your career?

Since starting my own company in 2017, I’ve since had the opportunity to network with many people in the industry. But my biggest accomplishment is getting brand placement in People enEspañol magazine, along with having wholesale orders and products sold in salons. As we are now going into year 5, I have many goals planned for this year. I set goals every 4 quarters and do what is needed to achieve them.

Are you able to identify a “tipping point” in your career when you started to see success? Did you start doing anything different? Are there takeaways or lessons that others can learn from that?

I started to see success in a year. I was fortunate to get a repost from Huda Beauty, which allowed me to grow 3,000 Instagram users in one day. It also allowed me to have international customers from Europe to Saudi Arabia. This allowed me to sell out in a day which was great, but also not great because I possibly could have gotten more sales. Afterward, I changed my marketing strategy from not only targeting US customers but also international customers. The takeaway I learned was that regardless of how much shipment may cost, people are willing to spend money on quality products and become repeat customers. Along with to expect the unexpected and always be ready.

In your experience what were the most effective ways for your business to generate leads and sales? Can you share a story or give an example?

The most effective way to generate leads was from giveaways and advertisements via social media and Google. The first giveaway we did before launching was giving away 25 samples to new email subscribers. This allowed me to gain 60 email subscribers in one day. Within the first month, I generated over 150 customers without any marketing initiatives.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person to whom you are grateful who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

I am grateful for Sabrine from @naturallybeautiful.co. She was the first curly hair model that reached out to me when I was looking for curly hair models for my campaign launch. She is a genuine person and through her, I was able to network within the curly-hair community; and establish great relationships with amazing people along the way. I also attended some of her events and pop-ups as a speaker.

Can you share a story with us about the most humorous mistake you made when you were first starting? What lesson or takeaway did you learn from that?

A story that comes to mind is having my first wholesale purchase of 350 bottles. I did not know what to expect when sending an email to a company to be in their subscription box. I was the only person packing bottles and I had two weeks to complete the order, all the while working a full-time job. It’s humorous now, but at the time it was not. The stress was high, but the excitement was to follow once everything was shipped.

You have been blessed with great success in a career path that many have attempted, but eventually gave up on. Do you have any words of advice for others who may want to embark on this career path but know that their dreams might be dashed?

Keep going! Whatever your reason is for wanting to stop, let that be the fuel to keep going. Owning a business is not an easy journey, but it is a beautiful one. Let the trial and errors be a stepping stone. In order to get to the top, you have to make mistakes. And if you did not fall once, or twice, then you weren’t trying.

Ok super. Let’s now shift to the main part of our discussion. Can you please share “Five Things Anyone Can Do To Have Fabulous Hair”. Please share a story or an example, for each.

Ah, 5 things?!

1) Well first, you can’t have beautiful hair without a healthy scalp.

2) Next is to get regular trims twice a year, every 6 months.

3) If you love to dye your hair, give yourself protein washes every once in a while. Anyone with damaged hair should use a protein wash. It helps to put back proteins you’ve lost through the years of damage.

4) Use a deep conditioner once or twice a week depending on your hair. Our Deep Conditioner Shine Treatment will help to eliminate frizz, add shine, and smooth out your hair cuticles.

5) Lastly, wearing a satin scarf or having a satin pillowcase is beneficial to the health of your hair. It works to prevent hair damage and reduces friction as you toss and turn while sleeping.

Can you share 3 ideas that anyone can use “to feel beautiful”? (Please share a story or example for each.)

  1. Find something to admire about yourself.
  2. Take the time to loosen up and not worry.
  3. Be an observer and not a judger.

You are a person of great influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-)

This world is at a place where we are breaking each other down. I think a movement I would want to start is #innerpeace. Having people take the time to see what is the reason that drives hate and evil, and find ways to reverse that into healing and being at peace. When we have inner peace, we can learn to love ourselves and others.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

A life lesson quote would be, “Instead of worrying about what you cannot control, shift your energy to what you can create.” I am the most paranoid person. I am always thinking about my future and how I need to control everything that happens. In reality, I cannot control everything. God has everything mapped out for me. I started to just believe more in him, and allowed my energy to just create. I am creating everything I want while he is still in control of my destiny. When things go bad, it is easy to point blame. But I believe that if I use the bad to fuel my motivation, I can get farther ahead with a positive mindset.

We are very blessed that some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world with whom you’d like to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this. :-)

This is a hard one because there are so many names that come to mind. I would like to sit down for breakfast or lunch with Oprah Winfrey. She is a great mentor and inspirational person.
