Thank you for joining us. To start, could you share your “origin story” with our readers? How did you begin your coaching journey, and what challenges did you face in the early days?

My name is Phil Portman CEO/Founder of Textdrip. My journey into business began with a pivotal moment in my youth when my step dad introduced me to “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” This book fundamentally altered my perception of success, challenging the conventional wisdom that business required a tough and rigid approach. Instead, it illuminated the power of building genuine connections and treating people with respect.

Carrying this philosophy with me, I navigated through the corporate world, where I witnessed firsthand the profound impact of investing in people. This belief in the importance of human relationships became the cornerstone of my entrepreneurial endeavors. When I ventured into the food delivery industry and expanded through franchising, I encountered a new set of challenges.

Working closely with franchise owners, I quickly realized that motivating individuals wasn’t a one-size-fits-all endeavor. While my own motivations had been fueled by certain factors, I learned that others were driven by entirely different aspirations. This discovery prompted a shift in my coaching approach.

Instead of imposing my own motivational triggers, I began by delving into the unique ambitions and values of each franchisee. By understanding their personal “why” — whether it was a desire for legacy, financial freedom, or something else entirely — I could tailor my coaching strategies to align with their individual goals.

This personalized approach not only fostered better rapport and trust but also led to more impactful results. It was a lesson in adaptability and empathy, teaching me to flex my coaching style to meet the diverse needs of those I worked with.

Over the years, this ability to connect on a personal level and tailor strategies accordingly has been instrumental in driving success in my business ventures. It’s a reminder that behind every business endeavor are individuals with unique aspirations and motivations, and by understanding and catering to those needs, we can unlock their full potential.

You are a successful business leader. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?

It’s funny that you asked. I literally just finished the manuscript or my book called the three keys to success. In the book I delve deep into the foundational principles that have shaped my journey in both business and personal development. Let’s start with the first key: setting written, visible goals. Initially skeptical of methods like vision boards, I embarked on an experiment, starting with my fitness goals. To my surprise, visually representing my aspirations on a whiteboard propelled me towards achieving them. This simple act of making goals tangible and ever-present in my daily life proved transformative, prompting me to apply the same strategy to my business objectives. By consistently setting ambitious goals and keeping them prominently displayed, I found myself exceeding expectations time and again.

Moving on to the second key, it’s all about cultivating beneficial habits while eliminating detrimental ones. I draw attention to the power of daily routines, emphasizing how seemingly small actions, like regular exercise or reading, can compound over time to yield significant results. Conversely, I highlight the pervasive issue of time wastage, citing alarming statistics on reading habits in society juxtaposed with the disciplined habits of successful CEOs. By focusing on intentional daily practices and trimming away distractions, individuals can pave the way for long-term success.

Finally, the third key is what I term “arrogant confidence.” This concept challenges individuals to push beyond their comfort zones and operate at a level of self-assuredness that borders on audacity. Reflecting on my own pivotal decision to leave a secure corporate job to pursue entrepreneurship, I share insights into the necessity of bold action fueled by unwavering belief in oneself. It’s this level of confidence that propels individuals to take risks, make leaps of faith, and ultimately achieve their most ambitious goals.

Together, these three keys — goal setting, habit formation, and arrogant confidence — form the cornerstone of success in both business and life. Can you share your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Why does that resonate with you so much?

F. Scott Fitzgerald once famously wrote, “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.” This quote deeply resonates with me because it highlights the importance of critical thinking and embracing complexity.

Too often, people seek simplistic answers without delving into the nuances of a situation. To truly understand, one must be willing to analyze all sides thoroughly. This mindset has been invaluable to me, both in life and entrepreneurship.

In navigating challenges, I’ve learned to consider multiple options and seek innovative solutions. This approach, akin to what productive thinking entails, has been championed by great minds throughout history.

I’ve personally experienced the limitations of traditional education, where conformity is prioritized over independent thought. This rigid system stifled my creativity and led me to pursue self-education instead.

For me, the key lies in fostering an open-minded perspective, one that embraces complexity and seeks to understand all facets of a situation. It’s about challenging the status quo and being willing to explore new ideas, even if they don’t align with conventional wisdom. Ultimately, it’s this ability to think critically and independently that paves the way for true innovation and personal growth.

What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now? How do you think that might help people?

We’re currently in the process of developing Coaches HQ, a comprehensive platform geared towards connecting clients with top-tier coaches across various domains. In today’s saturated coaching landscape, where anyone can brand themselves as a coach after completing a short course or obtaining a certification, it’s become increasingly crucial to distinguish between those who possess genuine expertise and those who may lack depth in their practice.

Certainly. I had the privilege of working with an individual who became a franchise owner in my previously owned food delivery business. When he first joined us, he lacked experience in entrepreneurship, but what immediately struck me was his remarkable enthusiasm and eagerness to learn.

As we navigated through various challenges together, including employee management issues and occasional missteps on social media, his commitment to growth never wavered. Despite setbacks, he remained receptive to feedback and dedicated to improving both personally and professionally.

After some time of coaching and development, he reached out to express his gratitude. He shared with me a deeply personal revelation — he had struggled for years in various sales roles and felt like he was letting down his family. However, through his journey as a successful entrepreneur, he had gained their respect and admiration. This transformation, he emphasized, was largely attributed to the coaching and development support he received.

Certainly. Understanding and effectively coaching individuals with diverse personalities has been a pivotal aspect of my journey. Initially, I used to shy away from coaching those whose personalities clashed with mine, assuming it would lead to communication barriers or conflicts. However, I soon realized that this avoidance was limiting my growth as a coach and leader.

Instead of viewing personality differences as obstacles, I began to see them as opportunities for personal development. Embracing the challenge of working with individuals outside of my comfort zone became a catalyst for honing my coaching skills and expanding my communication repertoire.

It wasn’t always easy. There were moments of frustration and discomfort, especially when faced with stark differences in communication styles. However, I recognized the importance of adapting my approach to meet the unique needs of each individual. This sometimes meant employing breathing exercises or meditation techniques to maintain composure and clarity during challenging interactions.

Through consistent practice and reflection, I gradually became more adept at navigating diverse personalities and fostering meaningful connections with clients and team members alike. This growth not only enhanced my effectiveness as a coach but also deepened my understanding of human behavior and interpersonal dynamics.

Today, I approach coaching with a renewed sense of confidence and versatility. I’m committed to meeting individuals where they are and tailoring my coaching style to suit their preferences and needs. How do you incorporate feedback into your coaching practice to continuously improve?

Seeking feedback is essential for growth, but how we ask for it matters. Rather than generic inquiries, like “Do you have any feedback for me?” it’s crucial to use specific prompts that encourage constructive input without creating discomfort. For example, asking for a star rating on sessions or action plans invites targeted feedback while maintaining a comfortable atmosphere for discussion.

Furthermore, discussing the outcomes of coaching sessions is paramount. By evaluating the impact of implemented strategies on their life or business, we can assess progress and make necessary adjustments. This results-focused approach ensures coaching efforts are aligned with achieving tangible results, fostering a more effective coaching relationship.

Regular check-ins play a vital role in this process, allowing us to track both lead and lag measures. Whether it’s behavioral changes or tangible results, consistent measurement helps gauge progress and refine coaching strategies for optimal outcomes. This structured approach not only enhances the feedback loop but also strengthens the coaching journey by ensuring continuous improvement and tangible results for the individual.

Can you discuss an innovation in coaching that you believe is currently underappreciated but has the potential to significantly impact the field?

Utilizing AI for feedback by recording coaching sessions has proven to be incredibly insightful for me. It provides an unbiased perspective, allowing me to review the key points highlighted by a third-party source. This process is particularly helpful after Zoom sessions, where I can assess whether the intended message was effectively conveyed. By examining the bullet points generated by AI, I ensure that the core aspects of my coaching are accurately captured, facilitating clearer communication and understanding.

Furthermore, I’ve found participation in Toastmasters to be a valuable resource for honing communication skills. Through this program, I receive constructive feedback on my communication style and articulation techniques. This has been especially beneficial as a leader, as effective communication is essential for guiding and inspiring others. Moreover, it significantly enhances my coaching interactions, enabling me to convey ideas and insights more effectively to clients.

In summary, leveraging AI feedback and participating in programs like Toastmasters are integral components of my approach to continuous improvement in communication. These practices not only refine my skills as a coach and leader but also ensure that I can effectively connect with and support others in their growth journeys.

I often compare coaching to prioritizing ‘big rocks’ — those important things in life that deserve our focused attention. Just like we make time for essential tasks, investing in coaching is a commitment to our own growth and well-being.

And it’s not just about coaching sessions; I also encourage practices like meditation to complement the process. These moments of calm help deepen insights and self-awareness, enriching the coaching experience even further.

Cybersecurity is an increasingly prominent concern, particularly given the frequent occurrence of data breaches in today’s digital landscape. Large institutions like Chase Bank allocating substantial resources, upwards of billions annually, to fortify their cyber defenses underscores the severity of the issue.

Yet, the regulatory environment often struggles to keep pace with rapid technological advancements. Government oversight tends to lag, with regulations sometimes trailing industry innovations by a decade or more. This delay can leave significant gaps in the enforcement of cybersecurity standards.

Therefore, it falls upon platforms facilitating personal meetings, such as those used by coaches, to prioritize robust privacy and security measures. These platforms must implement stringent protocols to safeguard sensitive information exchanged between coaches and clients.
