I think our greatest asset as actors is the power of empathy. We have to be able to relate to people whose circumstances are different than our own in order to do our jobs — and I see so much need for and absence of empathy in the world around us all right now. Climate change, civil rights for so many populations, voting rights, reproductive justice, criminal justice reform, gun policy, and on and on — just about every important issue boils down to our willingness and ability to care about and see the world from the perspectives of people whose circumstances are in some way different than ours.
