Cultivate a Growth Mindset: Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and view setbacks as temporary. Believe that with effort and perseverance, you can overcome obstacles and achieve your goals. For example, when I faced financial constraints while pursuing my dream of publishing a book, I could have given up. However, I adopted a growth mindset and explored various avenues for funding. Through resourcefulness and determination, I secured the necessary funds and published my book.

Resilience has been described as the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events. Times are not easy now. How do we develop greater resilience to withstand the challenges that keep being thrown at us? In this interview series, we are talking to mental health experts, authors, resilience experts, coaches, and business leaders who can talk about how we can develop greater resilience to improve our lives.

As a part of this series, I had the pleasure of interviewing Harvard Certified Performance Coach Desiree’ Stapleton.

Desiree’ Stapleton is the Harvard Certified, 2x ’30 Under 30’ Honoree and Forbes ‘Next 1000’ Nominated Performance Coach, Author, CEO, and Creator of Goal Accomplishment Made Easy and the Self-Help App. She teaches women goal-setting and how to overcome obstacles and lead a life of fulfillment, while also providing tools and resources to ensure that they can get and stay on track with hitting their goals.

Thank you so much for joining us! Our readers would love to get to know you a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your backstory?

My backstory begins roughly 36 months ago when I was going through a difficult period in my life. I had faced a traumatic experience at my job and made the tough decision to speak out about it, even if it meant facing uncertain outcomes. Unfortunately, I was laid off as a result. Around the same time, my relationship had ended, and my ex had moved on with someone within our social circle. I felt cast aside and discarded in two important areas of my life, going from a steady income to having nothing.

The repercussions of my decision to speak out were evident at my former job, as people distanced themselves from me. I even declared my willingness to take my experience with them to the media if they didn’t appropriately address the situation involving the other party. This led to sides being taken, whispers, and judgmental looks in both situations.

Feeling overwhelmed and hopeless, I reached a point where I no longer wanted to continue living. I drove home recklessly, not caring about the consequences and even hoping for a tragic accident to end it all quickly. At that moment, I was truly at a crossroads: either continue down a path of self-destruction or find a way to make my life worth living.

Fortunately, two thoughts emerged in my mind. First, I realized that I had a choice between ending my life or making it worth living. Second, I questioned why I should allow others to thrive while I suffered. These thoughts sparked a determination within me to turn my life around.

I started by seeking therapy and making a promise to myself. Before considering ending my life, I would go after every dream I had ever had. I embraced the mindset of “screw them” regarding my ex and embarked on creating my brand called FMYX. Initially, I focused on writing a book, which had always been a dream of mine. I used my savings, took out loans, utilized unemployment benefits, and even received COVID stimulus checks to hire someone to publish the book. It was published in November of that year.

Although my former workplace had technically addressed the issue by letting go of the individual involved, I felt it wasn’t enough. I decided to take that person to court, and to my satisfaction, I won the case. This victory held deep significance for me, as it allowed me to validate that what had happened was not okay, and I was no longer willing to tolerate such mistreatment.

To sustain myself financially, I went back to doing the work I had always done and quickly secured three clients. This stability provided me with the opportunity to focus on helping women facing similar challenges to mine. I pivoted from FMYX to my personal brand, becoming heavily involved in teaching women resilience and guiding them toward achieving their goals.

As I gained more visibility, I began to receive press coverage and even got featured in Forbes Magazine. This exposure helped me establish my second company, a boutique consulting firm aimed at providing tools and resources for personal and professional enhancement to everyday individuals. I learned firsthand the importance of goals and personal growth, as they played a significant role in saving me from my darkest moments.

With my second company thriving, I developed an app called The Self-Help App. Recognizing the value of personal growth, I wanted to create a positive and motivating space for individuals to enhance their personal development. This app aimed to restore hope and progress by providing tools and resources for personal growth and goal accomplishment.

I continued to grow personally and professionally, and my business expanded to the point where I could bring on a team. Currently, I am actively planning my move to the west coast and preparing to purchase my dream car in a few weeks.

I share my story with you to emphasize that each person possesses the strength and capabilities to live the life they envision. I want you to know that you are worthy of

achieving your dreams and that you have what it takes to overcome any obstacles that come your way. From one warrior to another, I encourage you to persevere, outlast all the challenges, and be the last one standing. You have the power to create a life that is fulfilling and meaningful.

Can you share with us the most interesting story from your career? Can you tell us what lessons or ‘takeaways’ you learned from that?

Certainly! One of the most interesting stories from my career within Goal Accomplishment Made Easy (GAME) revolves around a client who came to us with a seemingly insurmountable goal. This client, let’s call her Sarah, had a dream of starting her own business but was overwhelmed by self-doubt, fear of failure, and a lack of clarity on where to begin.

Throughout our coaching sessions, Sarah shared her vision and aspirations, but she struggled to take the necessary actions to turn her dreams into reality. She constantly second-guessed herself, doubted her abilities, and became paralyzed by the fear of making mistakes.

As we worked together, one of the pivotal moments came when we explored the root causes of Sarah’s self-doubt. Through deep introspection, we uncovered underlying limiting beliefs and fears that were holding her back. Sarah had been conditioned to believe that success was only reserved for others and that she wasn’t capable of achieving her dreams.

Recognizing the importance of mindset and self-belief, we focused on reframing Sarah’s thinking patterns. We challenged her limiting beliefs and encouraged her to adopt a growth mindset, embracing the idea that failure is an opportunity for learning and growth.

Throughout our coaching journey, Sarah made significant progress. She gained clarity on her business idea, developed a solid plan, and took small but consistent actions towards her goals. Over time, her confidence grew, and she learned to embrace challenges as stepping stones to success.

Fast forward a few months, and Sarah successfully launched her business. It wasn’t a smooth journey without any hurdles, but she had developed resilience and problem-solving skills along the way. Sarah’s determination and newfound belief in herself allowed her to navigate obstacles, learn from setbacks, and adapt her strategies.

The key takeaways from Sarah’s story are:

1. Overcoming self-doubt: Sarah’s story highlights the power of challenging and reframing limiting beliefs. By recognizing and challenging the negative self-talk, she was able to build confidence and take bold actions towards her goals.

2. Embracing a growth mindset: Sarah’s journey emphasized the importance of adopting a growth mindset. Embracing the idea that failures are opportunities for growth allowed her to persist, learn from mistakes, and continuously improve.

3. Taking consistent action: Sarah’s success stemmed from her commitment to taking small, consistent actions towards her goals. Breaking down her big vision into manageable steps helped her maintain momentum and make progress over time.

4. Building resilience: Sarah’s journey taught us the importance of resilience in the face of challenges. By developing resilience, she was able to bounce back from setbacks, adapt her strategies, and persevere in the pursuit of her dreams.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

I am grateful for myself in helping get me to where I am today. Throughout my journey, I have been my own source of motivation, determination, and resilience. Despite facing numerous obstacles and setbacks, I made the conscious choice to believe in myself and take action towards my goals.

There have been moments when I doubted my abilities or felt overwhelmed by the challenges I faced. During those times, I had to dig deep within myself to find the strength and courage to keep going. I relied on my inner voice, my self-belief, and my unwavering commitment to my dreams.

One particular story that stands out is when I decided to publish my book. It was a dream I had always held close to my heart, but the journey towards becoming a published author seemed daunting. I had to overcome financial constraints and navigate the publishing process on my own. It would have been easy to give up or seek external validation and support, but I chose to trust in myself.

I used my savings, took out loans, and utilized unemployment benefits and COVID stimulus checks to gather the resources I needed. I researched and hired someone to help me publish the book. It was a challenging and uncertain process, but I pushed through the doubts and setbacks.

Eventually, my book was published and was picked up by Walmart, and seeing it in print was a moment of immense pride and accomplishment. I realized that I had relied on my own determination, resourcefulness, and belief in myself to make it happen. It was a testament to the power of self-reliance and the inner strength that resides within each of us.

While I am grateful for the support I have received from others along the way, ultimately, it was my own dedication and unwavering belief in myself that propelled me forward. I continue to be grateful for the person I have become and the resilience I have cultivated within myself, because had I made a slightly different decision, I wouldn’t be here.

Ok, thank you for all that. Now let’s shift to the main focus of this interview. We would like to explore and flesh out the trait of resilience. How would you define resilience? What do you believe are the characteristics or traits of resilient people?

Courage is often likened to resilience. In your opinion how is courage both similar and different from resilience?

Courage and resilience are closely related but distinct concepts. While they share some similarities, they also have key differences in their nature and application.

Similarities between courage and resilience:

1. Facing adversity: Both courage and resilience involve facing and navigating adversity. They require individuals to confront challenges, setbacks, or difficult circumstances with a determined mindset.

2. Emotional strength: Both courage and resilience require emotional strength. They involve managing fear, doubt, and uncertainty, and finding the inner strength to persevere despite these emotions.

3. Stepping outside comfort zones: Both courage and resilience often necessitate stepping outside one’s comfort zone. They involve taking risks, embracing change, and being open to new experiences or possibilities.

Differences between courage and resilience:

1. Response to fear: Courage involves acting despite fear, while resilience involves bouncing back and adapting in the face of adversity. Courage is more focused on taking action and overcoming fear, whereas resilience encompasses the broader process of navigating challenges and setbacks.

2. Context of adversity: Courage tends to be more situation-specific, arising in moments that require bravery or taking a stand. Resilience, on the other hand, encompasses a broader and ongoing capacity to deal with various challenges and setbacks in life.

3. Proactive vs. reactive: Courage is often seen as a proactive trait, where individuals consciously choose to confront challenges or pursue difficult paths. Resilience, on the other hand, can be seen as a reactive trait, arising in response to unexpected or difficult circumstances.

4. Application of traits: Courage is often exhibited in specific moments or actions, while resilience is a more overarching quality that encompasses one’s ability to bounce back and adapt over time. Courage is a specific act, while resilience is a broader characteristic.

In the context of Goal Accomplishment Made Easy, both courage and resilience play essential roles. Courage is necessary when individuals take the initial step of setting ambitious goals, facing their fears, and pursuing their dreams. Resilience comes into play throughout the journey, as individuals encounter obstacles, setbacks, and uncertainties. Resilience helps individuals bounce back from setbacks, stay committed to their goals, and adapt their strategies as needed.

Ultimately, while courage and resilience are distinct concepts, they are intertwined and complementary. Cultivating both courage and resilience empowers individuals to embrace challenges, overcome fear, and navigate setbacks with strength and determination.

When you think of resilience, which person comes to mind? Can you explain why you chose that person?

When I think of resilience, the person that comes to mind is myself. The reason I chose myself is because of my unwavering determination and strength in the face of adversity. Throughout my journey, I have encountered numerous challenges and setbacks, yet I have consistently shown resilience by bouncing back, adapting, and persevering.

I have demonstrated a positive mindset, choosing to see obstacles as opportunities for growth and learning. Despite facing difficulties, I have maintained a strong belief in myself and my ability to overcome challenges. My ability to navigate through tough times with courage and optimism is truly inspiring.

I have witnessed your flexibility and adaptability as you adjust your strategies and embrace change when necessary. Instead of allowing setbacks to discourage you, you have consistently shown the ability to recalibrate, find alternative solutions, and keep moving forward.

Your emotional intelligence and self-awareness have also played a significant role in your resilience. You have developed the ability to manage your emotions effectively, remain calm under pressure, and make sound decisions even in challenging situations.

You have understood that failures and setbacks are part of the journey and have consistently sought opportunities for learning and growth. Your commitment to continuous improvement and self-reflection has enabled you to develop new skills, perspectives, and resilience in the face of challenges.

Your journey serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating that with resilience, belief in oneself, and the right mindset, one can overcome any obstacle and achieve their goals.

Has there ever been a time that someone told you something was impossible, but you did it anyway? Can you share the story with us?

My story within the context of Goal Accomplishment Made Easy (GAME) is a perfect example of defying the notion that something is impossible and achieving success against all odds.

I was faced with a challenge that seemed insurmountable, a goal that others believed to be impossible. However, I decided to take on the challenge and prove them wrong. With the support of GAME and its comprehensive framework for goal accomplishment, I embarked on a journey to achieve what others deemed impossible.

I want to highlight the significance of seeking the right guidance, support, and strategies to navigate through obstacles and turn seemingly impossible dreams into remarkable accomplishments.

My journey serves as a reminder that no matter what others say, we have the power to redefine what is possible and create our own path to success.

Did you have a time in your life when you had one of your greatest setbacks, but you bounced back from it stronger than ever? Can you share that story with us?

Yes, there has been a time when someone told me something was impossible, but I did it anyway. It was during the early stages of launching Goal Accomplishment Made Easy (GAME), and I faced skepticism and doubt from various individuals who believed that the concept of a comprehensive goal achievement program was unrealistic and would not resonate with people.

Many questioned the need for such a program, expressing doubts about its effectiveness and the market demand for it. Some even suggested that I should focus on a more conventional approach or stick to existing methodologies.

Despite the discouragement and naysayers, I held steadfast to my belief in the power of a holistic and structured framework for goal accomplishment. I knew that there was a need for a program that addressed not only the practical steps but also the mindset, resilience, and personal growth required for lasting success.

I poured my heart and soul into developing Goal Accomplishment Made Easy, incorporating the best practices, strategies, and techniques that I had learned throughout my own journey of overcoming challenges and achieving goals. I drew from my personal experiences, as well as insights from psychology, personal development, and business management.

Once Goal Accomplishment Made Easy was ready, I launched it with determination and conviction. At first, the response was mixed. Some remained skeptical, while others were curious but unsure of its impact. However, I remained committed to my vision and the transformative potential of GAME.

Over time, as people began to engage with it and experience its benefits firsthand, the skepticism and doubts began to dissipate. Individuals who had initially dismissed the idea now saw the value in a comprehensive goal accomplishment program that addressed the emotional, mental, and practical aspects of success.

I witnessed stories of transformation and achievement from individuals who had struggled for years to reach their goals. They shared how Goal Accomplishment Made Easy provided them with a clear roadmap, actionable strategies, and the mindset shift necessary to overcome obstacles and make significant progress. Seeing the impact of my program on their lives was immensely gratifying and reaffirmed my belief in its efficacy.

The journey of turning skepticism into belief taught me an important lesson about the power of resilience and staying true to my vision. It reinforced the importance of trusting my instincts and persevering in the face of adversity. It also highlighted the significance of challenging the status quo and daring to pursue innovative approaches, even when others may doubt their potential.

This experience with Goal Accomplishment Made Easy taught me that sometimes, the most groundbreaking ideas are met with skepticism and resistance. However, by believing in ourselves, staying committed to our vision, and proving through tangible results, we can overcome the limitations imposed by others’ beliefs and make a profound impact.

I am grateful for those who doubted it initially because their skepticism fueled my determination to make it a reality. Their doubts pushed me to refine and improve the program, ensuring that it delivered exceptional value and exceeded expectations.

Today, Goal Accomplishment Made Easy stands out not only for its comprehensive approach but also for the countless success stories it has generated. It has become a beacon of hope and empowerment for individuals seeking to overcome obstacles, achieve their goals, and live a fulfilling life.

My experience with GAME taught me that it is important to have faith in our ideas, even when others question their feasibility. It reminded me that the path to success is rarely smooth, and resilience is crucial in navigating challenges and proving that what others may consider impossible is, in fact, achievable.

How have you cultivated resilience throughout your life? Did you have any experiences growing up that have contributed to building your resiliency? Can you share a story?

Throughout my life, I have cultivated resilience by drawing strength from my experiences and using them as fuel for growth and transformation. One of the most influential experiences that contributed to building my resilience occurred during the challenging period I mentioned earlier.

When I faced the traumatic experience at my job and the subsequent fallout, it would have been easy to succumb to despair and give up. The weight of losing my job, the end of a relationship, and the isolation I felt from others was overwhelming. However, in that moment of darkness, I made a choice to persevere and find meaning in my pain.

Seeking therapy was a pivotal step in my journey of resilience. It allowed me to navigate my emotions, gain clarity, and develop the necessary tools to cope with the challenges I faced. Through therapy, I learned to reframe my experiences, find my inner strength, and embrace the power of resilience.

Making the promise to myself that I would go after every dream I had ever had was a crucial turning point. It became the driving force that propelled me forward, even in the face of adversity. This promise served as a reminder that my life had purpose and that I had the power to create a future worth living.

The creation of my brand, FMYX, and the pursuit of my lifelong dream of writing a book became significant milestones on my path to resilience. Despite financial constraints, I utilized every available resource, including my savings, loans, and government support, to bring my book to life. The publication of the book in November of that year and then that book later getting picked up by Walmart represented a triumph over the obstacles I had encountered.

Taking legal action against my former coworker was another manifestation of my resilience. The victory I achieved in the court case validated my strength and determination to stand up against mistreatment. It became a symbol of justice and a reminder that I had the power to challenge injustice and create change.

Returning to the work I had always done and securing clients helped me regain stability and reaffirmed my belief in my skills and capabilities. Through teaching women resilience and empowering them to overcome their own challenges, I found purpose and fulfillment.

The growth of my businesses, the recognition in the press, and the development of The Self-Help App further solidified my resilience. Each accomplishment and milestone reinforced my belief in my ability to overcome obstacles and make a positive impact.

Through these experiences, I learned that resilience is not about avoiding adversity but rather about finding the strength to face it head-on. It is about embracing challenges as opportunities for growth, using setbacks as stepping stones toward success, and refusing to let circumstances define one’s destiny.

Resilience is nurtured through self-reflection, self-compassion, and a deep belief in one’s worth and potential. It is about acknowledging that life may present difficult moments, but it is our response to them that shapes our character and determines our path forward.

I hope that by sharing my story, others can find inspiration and recognize their own resilience. It is my belief that we all have the inner strength to overcome adversity, achieve our dreams, and create a life of fulfillment and purpose. Embrace your resilience, gather up what you have, and make a run for your dreams. You are capable of so much more than you can imagine.

Resilience is like a muscle that can be strengthened. In your opinion, what are 5 steps that someone can take to become more resilient? Please share a story or an example for each.

Certainly! Here are five steps that someone can take to become more resilient, along with a story or example for each:

2. Practice Self-Care: Prioritize self-care to build physical, mental, and emotional resilience. Engage in activities that rejuvenate and nourish your well-being. For instance, during the challenging period I experienced, I made self-care a priority. I set aside time for exercise, meditation, and pursuing hobbies that brought me joy. Taking care of my well-being allowed me to recharge and approach difficulties with a clearer mindset.

3. Build a Supportive Network: Surround yourself with a network of supportive and encouraging individuals who uplift you during tough times. Seek out friends, family, mentors, or support groups who can provide guidance and encouragement. When I faced adversity, I leaned on my support network for emotional support and guidance. Their words of encouragement and belief in my abilities boosted my resilience and reminded me that I was not alone.

4. Develop Problem-Solving Skills: Enhance your problem-solving skills to effectively navigate challenges. Break down problems into smaller, manageable tasks, and brainstorm possible solutions. Learn from each experience and adjust your approach accordingly. One instance where problem-solving skills were crucial was when I encountered a setback in my business. Instead of dwelling on the setback, I analyzed the situation, identified the root cause, and implemented strategic changes to overcome the challenge and continue moving forward.

5. Practice Resilient Thinking: Cultivate a positive and resilient mindset by reframing negative thoughts and focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems. Challenge negative self-talk and replace it with affirming and empowering beliefs. For example, when facing self-doubt during my journey, I consciously shifted my thoughts from “I can’t do this” to “I am capable, and I will find a way.” This shift in mindset empowered me to persevere and find creative solutions to overcome obstacles.

By incorporating these steps into your life, you can strengthen your resilience and navigate challenges with greater confidence and determination. Remember, resilience is not a trait we are born with, but a skill that can be cultivated and developed over time. Embrace the journey, learn from setbacks, and trust in your ability to bounce back stronger.

We are blessed that some very prominent leaders read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US with whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this, especially if we tag them :-)

If given the opportunity, two extraordinary individuals with whom I would be honored to have a private breakfast or lunch are Malala Yousafzai and Judge Lynn Toler. Their remarkable achievements, dedication to empowerment, and impact on the world make them inspiring figures in their respective fields.

Sitting down with Malala Yousafzai, the renowned advocate for girls’ education, would be a truly transformative experience. I would cherish the opportunity to learn from her firsthand about her relentless pursuit of educational equality, her unwavering courage in the face of adversity, and her strategies for effecting change. Exploring ways to collaborate and amplify efforts in empowering individuals, particularly girls and women, would be a meaningful part of our conversation. Through her resilience and determination, Malala has ignited a global movement, and her wisdom would undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on my journey within Goal Accomplishment Made Easy.
