As a part of this series, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Dr. Alexander Scheer.

Dr. Alexandre Scheer, the founder of Scheer Medical Wellness, is a New York-based physician, with more than 20 years of experience. He serves as the Medical Director (MD) of Scheer Medical Wellness, a cutting edge practice which provides a comprehensive range of high-quality services. Dr. Scheer earned his medical degree from New York Medical College and subsequently completed his Surgical internship at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, followed by training in neurological surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine until 2009. As a physician, my journey is deeply personal and interwoven with love, passion, and empathy. Born in France, I was blessed with early exposure to diverse cultures and perspectives, which instilled in me a profound appreciation for human connection. My pursuit of medicine took a significant turn when I moved to the United States, where I not only learned English but also immersed myself in an entirely new way of life. This experience of adapting to a different language and culture honed my empathy, making me acutely aware of the nuances in communication and the importance of understanding each individual’s unique background.

My academic path led me to the prestigious halls of UCLA, where I delved deep into the scientific rigors of medicine, driven by a passion to understand the complexities of the human body and its ailments. The diverse community at UCLA provided a rich tapestry of experiences, further enhancing my ability to connect with people from all walks of life. My medical journey then took me to New York Medical College, a pivotal chapter where my skills and knowledge were refined. Here, I learned not just the art and science of medicine, but also the importance of compassionate care and the fundamentally human experience of addressing failures of one’s own body. Every patient encounter, and every clinical rotation was an opportunity to put into practice the human connection I had cultivated over the years, ensuring that each patient felt heard, respected, and cared for. The mental obstacles were equally as important as the physical obstacles. As science has progressed, we have learned more and more about the mind-body connection to health, wellness and healing.

These experiences, from my early days in France to my formative years in the United States, have been instrumental in shaping me into the physician I am today. With a heart full of love for my patients, a relentless passion for medical excellence, and a deep-seated respect for the human condition born from personal and professional experiences, I am committed to providing the best care possible, treating not just the illness, but the person as a whole.

What is your “WHY” behind what you do? What fuels you?

My “why” behind being a physician is rooted in a desire to make a tangible, positive difference in the lives of others. It is the drive to not only treat diseases but to impact lives on a human level and improve overall quality of life. This motivation stems from a fundamental belief in the sanctity of life and the intrinsic value of health, both mental and physical, as a cornerstone for happiness and fulfillment. Witnessing the resilience of the human spirit, the gratitude in a patient’s eyes after a successful treatment, and the relief in their loved ones’ faces — these moments fuel my dedication and remind me why I chose this path.

Additionally, the intellectual challenge and the ever-evolving landscape of medicine keep me fueled. The medical field is a dynamic and constantly advancing discipline, offering endless opportunities for learning and growth. I am driven by the excitement of new research, the potential of innovative treatments, and the challenge of solving complex medical puzzles. Sometimes our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share a story about a mistake or failure which you now appreciate has taught you a valuable lesson?

Reflecting on key teachable moments in your career offers learning opportunities that are crucial for growth, both personally and professionally. One particular instance that stands out in my experience involves a situation where I learned about the importance of clear communication in a team setting.

As a project lead, I was overseeing a complex initiative with multiple stakeholders. In my eagerness to progress, I assumed that everyone on the team had a clear understanding of their roles and the project’s objectives. However, I learned that in every initiative, I need to check-in frequently with all team members and provide clear, detailed communication about evolving expectations and deadlines. I learned that the way to avoid misunderstandings, missed deadlines, or project delays is to communicate clearly and daily with all team members.

This particular instance helped me to evolve into a more effective communicator and leader — and to better ensure consistent team engagement in any initiative I was leading. This experience taught me to prioritize transparent and frequent communication, to actively listen to team members, and to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

Since then, I have applied these lessons in subsequent projects, leading to improved team dynamics, better project outcomes, and a more inclusive and collaborative work environment. This teachable moment was a turning point in my leadership approach, emphasizing that clear communication is just as vital as the technical aspects of project management.

You are a successful leader. Which three-character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?

Reflecting on the traits that have been instrumental to my success, I would highlight empathy, resilience, and continuous learning. Each of these traits has not only shaped my leadership style but has also profoundly impacted my professional journey.

Empathy: Empathy has been crucial in understanding and connecting with my team, colleagues, patients and their families. It is about more than just recognizing emotions. It is about truly understanding and sharing the feelings of others. For instance, when leading a team through a challenging project, I noticed one of my team members was underperforming. Instead of jumping to conclusions, I had a one-on-one conversation with them. It turned out they were going through a difficult personal situation. By offering support, not only did their performance improve, but it also fostered a deeper sense of loyalty and trust within the team. Moreover, a patient is much more than their health issue or condition. They are a conglomeration of their emotions, viewpoints and life experiences. Treating a condition is only pare to treating the whole person.

Resilience: All leaders must navigate through uncertainties and setbacks. Resilience has enabled me to remain focused and optimistic, even in the face of adversity and setbacks, which we all experience. For example, I embarked on a major project that hit multiple roadblocks due to unforeseen external factors. Instead of giving in to frustration, I focused on adapting our strategies and finding innovative solutions. This resilience not only helped in successfully completing the project but also served as an inspiration for my team to approach challenges with a positive and tenacious mindset.

Continuous Learning: The willingness to continually learn and evolve has been fundamental. In a rapidly changing world, staying abreast of new trends, technologies, and methodologies is vital. Early in my career, I realized that my technical knowledge was becoming outdated. Instead of resting on my laurels, I committed to a rigorous self-education regime, attending workshops, and even going back to school for an advanced course. This not only enhanced my skills but also demonstrated to my team the importance of lifelong learning and adaptability. To this day, I continue to train in new techniques and procedures, and appreciate greatly the knowledge others can impart to me and my team.

These traits — empathy, resilience, and continuous learning — have not only been instrumental in my career but have also helped cultivate a positive and productive work environment. They are the cornerstones upon which effective and inspiring leadership is built, and while I am only human, I strive every day to retain these pillars in my mind.

What are some of the most interesting or exciting new projects you are working on now? How do you think that will help people?

Working on groundbreaking projects such as the use of autologous stem cells for treating neurodegenerative diseases and innovative limb lengthening surgeries to enhance stature and self-esteem has been both challenging and exhilarating. These projects are at the forefront of medical innovation, offering new hope and possibilities in areas where traditional treatments have had limited success.

Autologous Stem Cells for Neurodegenerative Diseases: This project is particularly close to my heart, as it has the potential to revolutionize the treatment of diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ALS, which currently have no cure. By using a patient’s own stem cells, we aim to develop personalized therapies that can potentially repair damaged nerve tissues and restore lost functions. This approach not only minimizes the risk of immune rejection but also opens up a new frontier in regenerative medicine. The impact of this research could be enormous, offering a new lease on life for millions of patients suffering from these debilitating conditions.
