The Future of Beauty: Insiyah Darugar of Glow Theory On How Their Technological Innovation Will Shake Up The Beauty Industry

An Interview With Candice Georgiadis

Your skin care regimen is more important than you think. You need high-quality medical grade ingredients. If you are afraid of price-point, let me reassure you it’s no more than something you might find at the mall. Also, we can start with key ingredients to work within your budget, and help you build from there.

As a part of our series about how technology will be changing the beauty industry over the next five years, I had the pleasure of interviewing Insiyah Darugar.

While Insiyah is new to practicing in San Diego, she boasts more than 10 years of hands-on experience in Dermatology across the country. Insiyah completed the most prestigious Dermatology Nurse Practitioner Fellowship in the nation at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, MA, a program affiliated with Harvard Dermatology Residency Program. In her free time, Insiyah loves to stay active and adventurous. She always finds a way to keep challenging herself. Insiyah has traveled to more than 30 countries and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Before we dive in, our readers would love to learn a bit more about you. Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I am super fortunate to have completed a proper fellowship in dermatology over a decade ago. Usually physicians complete fellowships, but this one was geared towards Nurse Practitioners in dermatology at The Lahey Clinic in Massachusetts. Only 2 applicants are chosen at a time, I worked at several Harvard teaching hospitals in Boston, MA, attended grand rounds, and listened to monthly lectures at the Wellman Center of Photomedicine. This is where innovative laser technology is born, and it defiantly fueled my passion for lasers. I have worked in thriving dermatology offices for the past 13 years where we had a strong focus on skin cancers and auto-immune diseases. Yet, I still was able to utilize aesthetics. Then the idea came to me to offer more of a hybrid office. Where we offer simple dermatology, and advanced aesthetics, ye more scientifically rooted treatments than a traditional med-spa.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you began your career?

I am passionate about giving people time and understanding their concerns. Educating my clients is top priority. I love it when clients say, “Wow, I have never had anyone take the time to explain this as much as you, and it makes sense of why you are telling me this”. To me, this means that they value the education I have provided and have an understanding that I am in confident in what I do.

Are you able to identify a “tipping point” in your career when you started to see success?

We just opened Glow Theory in Carlsbad California in November 2021 and word of mouth became my most notable way of gaining new clients.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person to whom you are grateful who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

I met the most fantastic human being upon moving to North County San Diego. Her name is Janet Huntley and she is a local Esthetician. Talk about a cheerleader! She has really elevated my business with her number of referrals, and although I have an Aesthetician working for me, we consider ourselves colleagues in business and refer each other clients. She is wonderful. Go check her out at on IG @elevatebeautyandink!

Ok super. Let’s now shift to the main part of our discussion. The beauty industry today has access to technology that was inconceivable only a short time ago. Can you tell us about the “cutting edge” (pardon the pun) technologies that you are working with or introducing? How do you think that will help people?

Absolutely, we are an aesthetic technology company! We were even recently nominated by the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce as “Innovator of the Year”. Every single aspect of our practice is based upon cutting edge, results driven innovation, and science! We take a thorough deep dive into one’s needs and concerns. Here is a list of our services and how they help.

  • Visia Imager — showcases sun damage and calculates true skin age. After skin care and/or lasers we can show proof of how this was helpful on a deeper level. Even my teen clients that see me for acne can benefit from this as a source of education, I take the time to educate all young people on the importance of SPF and their personal sun damage. Parents also like this as part of the consult because the image will also tell us if they are washing their skin and being compliant with their regimen.
  • Sciton Laser — is a Gold Standard laser specific to one’s skin needs. BBL Hero/Halo/SkinTyte/ Forever Clear. These effective treatments help clear the complexion, rewind the clock, and tighten the skin.
  • Emsclupt Neo — Deemed “the best non-invasive body shaping technology” in the industry. This innovative device launched in 2020 as the hottest fat burning muscle building machine on the market. Go to IG and see my testimony!
  • There may not be too much innovation in injectables such as Botox and fillers. However, I give everyone a miniature anatomy lesson and the best places to place product for them. My consultations are thorough as l look at the face as one whole unit, not just a pair of lips.
  • Skin care — Our products are backed by numerous scientific studies, some of which created new molecules when launched, others address expedited healing for a faster recovery from procedures.
  • We follow the philosophy of enhancement and not taking away from your originality. We certainly like to keep you looking like you, but better. That’s why “The Science of Confidence” is our mantra.
  • Education — Our goal is that our clients learn something and understand “their why” . This empowers them while helping them achieving their goals.

Keeping “Black Mirror” and the “Law of Unintended Consequences” in mind, can you see any potential drawbacks about this technology that people should think more deeply about?

I believe you are referring to how “great innovations” can become a society downfall. Therefore, we love putting the brakes on people’s appointment times and setting realistic expectations in place upon consultation. We pride ourselves on showcasing our own in-house client’s before and after results so that people have a clear vision of their experience and service we provide.

Can you share 3 things that most excite you about the “beauty-tech” industry?

  • BBL Hero, it’s the strongest IPL on the market and a true fountain of youth procedure. Stanford University conducted a 10-year study proving this! I have high quality images of my face over the past years. It was not until I started doing lasers that the imagers started to rewind my age. Visia is a high-quality imager we use to calculated sun damage and true skin age, my first image this told me my skin age was older than my actual age despite getting Botox for many years prior. Again, it wasn’t until I started a regular laser regimen that started rewinding and undoing unwanted sun damage, fine lines, texture. Currently my most recent Visia image states my true skin age is 7 years younger than my real age.
  • Your skin care regimen is more important than you think. You need high-quality medical grade ingredients. If you are afraid of price-point, let me reassure you it’s no more than something you might find at the mall. Also, we can start with key ingredients to work within your budget, and help you build from there.
  • Emsclupt Neo — our non-surgical body contouring device is going to accelerate your gym performance with muscle growth and help you shred the excess inches with fat loss with this 30-minute treatment.

Can you share 3 things that most concern you about the industry? If you had the ability to implement 3 ways to reform or improve the industry, what would you suggest?

  • Instagram filters! I had to tell my marketing people to stop retouching my photos so much because I felt like it makes me appear less relatable.
  • I would love to see less overdone appearances. I like the undetectable appearance of fillers, treatment, etc.
  • Results take time. Often smaller treatments more frequently yield better natural appearing results. I use my own testimony all the time in the aspect of antiaging. I have literally tried and used every treatment in my office.

You are an expert about beauty. Can you share 5 ideas that anyone can use “to feel beautiful”?

  • Healthy skin is in! This also equates to a clearer complexion.
  • I say it time and time again, it doesn’t matter if you have wrinkles, if you can have healthy skin, you will radiate no matter what!
  • Lasers help you go make-up free and feel beautiful and confident; honestly, a tinted SPF is my goal for my clients.
  • Men- I love making men more handsome! The most handsome men in the world may have wrinkles but notice how they have the common theme of clear skin. Our BBL Hero is my favorite manly treatment, addressing sun damage as well as a clear complexion! I treated many of my construction workers when we first opened. It was such a gratifying feeling treating them. Because of their industry, you can see the visible toll UV damage had taken on their skin. BBL Hero treatments made such a difference for all of them. I teach men, “lasers never feminize you, just make you appear healthier”.
  • Once you have achieved some of your goals with us, we teach you how to protect your investments. Prolonging your beauty results longer.

You are a person of great influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-)

Get your skin checked by a dermatologist. Everyone should have a baseline. I have biopsied skin cancers from people as early as their 20’s. Do it, do it now!

Wear RASH GAURDS and wide brim hats with outdoor activities! 90% of our aging comes from our daily UVA. More than 5 severe burns in our life increases our risk for skin cancer. Rash guards are sporty and stylish. My son is 7 and has never known anything but a long sleeve rash guard when it comes to outdoors.

Empower your children to apply their own sunscreen! You can fill in the gaps as the adult but get them in the habit early. I give my son $2 for each SPF stick he finishes from his school backpack, empower your children!

Makeup with SPF is NOT sunscreen. You are wearing makeup all day but not SPF all day. Please apply SPF first, then reapply every 2 hours, more often if swimming, sweating, getting wet.

If you don’t like sunscreen, if your man doesn’t like sunscreen, come and see me. I’ll find one for you.
