What inspired you to enter the diamond industry, particularly focusing on lab-grown diamonds?

I came into the diamond industry not with the intention of becoming a corporate figure but as an activist. The realization hit me hard when I learned that the diamond I had purchased was part of a larger, troubling industry. Growing up in Australia instilled in me a strong environmental consciousness, so discovering the harm my purchase had potentially contributed to was a wake-up call. This led me to sponsor a family in a diamond mining community, aiming to make amends on a personal level. Realizing the impact of how earth-mined diamonds create conflict for communities led me to seek out alternatives and find the science behind growing diamonds in labs.

How did you first learn about the issues associated with traditional diamond mining?

The journey began with a question about the origin of my diamond, which I had never considered beyond the jewelry store. This prompted me to do some research, and learn that most earth-mined diamonds couldn’t be traced back to their origins due to their extensive journey through multiple countries and hands. This lack of traceability, especially in a time of widespread conflict within diamond mining countries, sparked my interest to find a better way.

Reflecting on your journey, what have been some of the most significant challenges and milestones?

Transitioning from an activist to a business owner is a challenge, especially with all of the complexities involved when trying to transform a startup into a sustainable business. The first few years were tough because of how limited we were with technology, but things have drastically changed and now there’s been a lot of advancements in lab-grown diamond technology that helped even the playing field.

How do you differentiate MiaDonna from other companies in the diamond industry?

MiaDonna stands apart not just for our product but for our ethos. We began as an answer to the ethical, environmental, and social injustices perpetuated by the traditional diamond industry. Every aspect of our operation, from the growth of lab-grown diamonds to our commitment to transparency and consumer education, is designed to challenge the status quo and offer a genuinely ethical alternative.

Looking ahead, what are your goals for MiaDonna, and how do you see the industry evolving?

Our goal is to continue leading the charge towards a more ethical and sustainable future for the diamond industry. This involves not only advancing our technology to further reduce environmental impact but also ensuring that lab-grown diamonds are recognized for their true value and potential to effect change. The industry is at a critical juncture where consumer awareness and demand for ethical practices can drive significant transformation, and MiaDonna aims to be at the forefront.

What message do you have for consumers navigating the complex diamond market?

Education and awareness are key. It’s crucial for consumers to understand the impact of their purchases and to seek out truly ethical options. Look for third-party certifications and companies committed to transparency and positive change. By choosing lab-grown diamonds and supporting companies like MiaDonna, consumers have the power to drive the industry.

Anna-Mieke’s story is a testament to the power of individual action in driving industry-wide change. Through MiaDonna, Anna-Mieke not only offers a sustainable alternative to traditional diamonds but also challenges us to reconsider our consumer choices in light of their broader impact.
