Culture — Try to discern as much as possible about the internal work culture of the organization. When you are considering joining a new nonprofit and its cause, it’s easy to be overwhelmed with excitement and hope. And that’s a good thing! But take the time to notice in the interview process itself-are meetings hastily scheduled and rescheduled? Do the calls start on time? What is the behavior of those you meet, even those you are not directly interviewing with? Some nonprofits can have a bit of martyr culture where one is expected to give large amounts of time and effort for little pay-leading to disappointment and burnout. It is possible to serve a mission and maintain your own healthy life and future.
