Hire slowly, fire (or let people leave) quickly. I’ve definitely learned this the hard way and made mistakes with this. Both with rushed hires that subsequently don’t work out, and trying to hold on to people who aren’t working out or just don’t want to be here for too long. It’s the more difficult route, but not getting it right is a costly mistake for both employee and employer — nobody wins — so it’s always worth trying to stick to this.

Will Brookes is CEO of Raconteur, the Raconteur Group’s B2B publishing company. Will was appointed CEO in early 2021, when he guided the company to an EBITDA figure of more than £2m — the most profitable year in its 13-year history by some distance.
