Women In Wellness: Heather K of Curly Girl Method Club On The Five Lifestyle Tweaks That Will Help Support People’s Journey Towards Better Wellbeing

--

Make time for life outside of your business because being an entrepreneur can be very lonely and that tunnel focus and vision may mean that you don’t make enough time for yourself.

As a part of my series about women in wellness, I had the pleasure of interviewing Heather, The Curls at Home Coach, founder of Curly Girl Method Club.

Heather created a global brand with a 250K community of women who look to her hair care range CGMC ™️ and tutorials named CGM Club ™️ to fast track their path to fabulous healthier, frizz-less curls so that they can enjoy predictable hair days embracing its natural form rather than fighting against it — and find confidence in showing up as themselves.

She helps women with frizzy, poofy, dry, limp, fine, thick, wavy, coarse, and more master their curls at home.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Our readers would love to “get to know you” better. Can you share your “backstory” with us?

Absolutely, having spent my youth hating having big wild ginger hair, and feeling uncomfortable being different — losing hours of my life, and much of my confidence, to trying to tame it. I wrote an ebook in 2017 to help others, which was downloaded thousands of times — sharing shortcuts to curl success and easy routes to unlock curl confidence. I have spent years developing bespoke products and processes that help solve many of the problems. I’ve now made it my mission to empower and educate others globally, to change how they feel about their hair too.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career? What were the main lessons or takeaways from that story?

That I didn’t actually set out to have a business within the hair industry. I was running a successful property business and recruitment firm. My calling and my mission found me, every time I helped someone online, more people asked for help. I have a passion for curls with my own experiences, my own struggles and it almost felt too much fun to develop into a business as I’d always worked within a suit and tie industry. When people read my ebook they asked me to help them with products which is why i developed CGMC and then help them with tutorials which is why i created CGM Club, the rest is history. My knowledge and experience, products and tutorials are straight talking and save people hours of trial and error! I explain why things they were buying in the supermarket weren’t working, how they can avoid those in the future. I love what I do. I could talk for hours and help people for hours with pure enjoyment and always get a buzz from seeing someone’s hair transform even after 8,000+ transformations so far. The biggest lesson for me is that your calling will find you you’ve just got to listen.

It has been said that our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share a story about a mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

My biggest mistake and biggest learning curve has almost certainly been managing my mental health whilst maintaining a public online presence. In 2019 I nearly quit , closed my online accounts and business and walked away from helping others because of trolls. I let a few people targeting me allow 1,000’s of people to not get the help they needed. Being trolled is part of being online and i’ve been trolled frequently over the past 6 years and i’m not going to say it gets easier but i’ve learnt that it is a reflection of the troll themselves and that you cannot help everybody you must protect yourself and your mental health over trying to help all of the people all of the time.

Let’s jump to our main focus. When it comes to health and wellness, how is the work you are doing helping to make a bigger impact in the world?

My work is letting people see that they are good enough without any reservation and that any past experiences they had as a child, teenager or adult when it came to their hair can be healed now. Unfortunately a lot of us have had a turbulent relationship with our hair and therefore have many memories associated with why we may not wear our hair in its natural form; rather we have been taught to fight against it. We may have received comments about frizz, about looking unprofessional and wanting sleek straight hair throughout our childhood years but it is mostly a lack of knowledge and education that it doesn’t need to be damaged and straightened but loved and nourished. When we are able to show someone how to achieve this themselves at home they do find confidence in showing up as themselves.

Can you share your top five “lifestyle tweaks” that you believe will help support people’s journey towards better wellbeing? Please give an example or story for each.

Rinsing your hair with cooler water after washing will help reduce frizz.

Take 5 minutes to learn something about your hair.

Setting examples to our children that we love our waves and curls.

Embracing your hairs wave or curls will eventually result in greater confidence in showing up truly as themselves.

Share any knowledge you gain to friends and strangers you see with hidden waves & curls.

If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of wellness to the most amount of people, what would that be?

Since 2017 it’s been my mission to reach as many people as possible, especially those that have always been led to believe that their hair is not good enough or that it is not curly or wavy but just poofy or frizzy. It is estimated that over 65% of the population have wavy or curly hair, however many believe their hair isn’t nice or just so and therefore they feel different and as if their hair doesn’t fit in either category straight or curly. It’s those I would most like to reach to show them how wonderful their waves and curls are with a few simple steps that can transform that frizz with a bit of patience and knowledge.

What are your “5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Started” and why?

Don’t be too patient in business because I lost £25,000 with a formulations company who after two years still hadn’t created what I needed, I should’ve been firmer.

Trust your instincts, you know you know when something isn’t right you should act on that instinct not try and people please.

Follow your intuition, that inner voice in the shower that comes up with great ideas, she knows!

Have fun with it, enjoy the moments and celebrate more wins.

Make time for life outside of your business because being an entrepreneur can be very lonely and that tunnel focus and vision may mean that you don’t make enough time for yourself.

Sustainability, veganism, mental health, and environmental changes are big topics at the moment. Which one of these causes is dearest to you, and why?

Mental health and general well being. This year will be my 6th year in this industry and it’s very hard going. It is hard being online and it is not known how social media will affect our mental health. I am very strong minded, thick skinned but found myself very poorly and admitted into hospital with sepsis and pneumonia at the end of 2022. Therefore 2023 for me is more about balance, reducing stress and the effects on our mental and therefore physical health.
