Tune into your spiritual side. Spirituality does not need to be affiliated with a specific religion. Spirituality means different things to different people. To some, it means connecting with a Higher Power through prayer or other spiritual means. To others, it may simply mean listening to your intuition, that little voice within you, and trusting your gut. By tuning into your spiritual side, you build faith in yourself and begin to notice the beauty in the world around you. You can start by becoming aware of the positive things in your life. Pay attention to the things you like about yourself. Practice gratitude. Write down one thing you are thankful for each day and watch the list grow over time!

As a part of my series about women in wellness, I had the pleasure of interviewing Stefanie Ruth.

Stefanie Ruth is a #1 best-selling author, speech-language pathologist, Reiki Master Teacher, and ordained minister. She obtained a Master of Science in Communications Disorders at Mercy College. Since 2011, Stefanie has provided Reiki sessions and certification classes to people world-wide. She is the founder of Live and Breathe Reiki LLC, the creator of “Mind Body Spirit Affirmation Cards”, and the author of “Your Sacred Journey: The Ultimate Guidebook to Align Your Mind, Body, & Spirit.”

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Our readers would love to “get to know you” better. Can you share your “backstory” with us?

Of course! I’m so happy to be here. After completing graduate school in 2008, I began my career as a speech-language pathologist. As someone who always had difficulty voicing my thoughts and emotions, I found joy in helping young children find their own voice. Our voice is our power, and for so many years, I hid mine. I was always scared of showing up and being vulnerable. I was scared of taking up space. I was afraid to share my truth. I was afraid to be seen. I was so afraid to share my authentic self with the world.

After ten years of dealing with anxiety and an eating disorder, I finally built up the courage to put myself first. I was finally ready for a change. That was the moment when I took charge of my life and began my own wellness journey. I began learning about Reiki in 2011. I loved it so much that I became a Reiki practitioner that same year. Reiki (ray-kee) is a Japanese energy healing technique that is used to promote relaxation and stress-reduction. By practicing Reiki, I was able to calm my mind and focus on healing my mind, body and spirit. Reiki played a major role in my healing. I became a Reiki Master in 2015, which allowed me to begin teaching Reiki to others.

Then, after starting my Instagram page and making connections with people around the world, I officially opened my business, Live and Breathe Reiki LLC in 2021. Most recently, I published my debut book, Your Sacred Journey: The Ultimate Guidebook to Align Your Mind, Body, & Spirit, in March 2023!

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career? What were the main lessons or takeaways from that story?

Great question! I don’t think I’ve shared this story with anyone yet. I started toying with the idea to write a book in 2022. After writing my first rough draft, I began to look into publishing options. I got in touch with someone who told me, more or less, that no one would want to read my book. I remember hanging up the phone, feeling defeated and embarrassed. There was a part of me that wanted to give up. The sad thing is, if this happened to me years ago, I know I would have.

Since starting my wellness journey, I’ve come such a long way. My confidence has grown. I now use my voice and think about things in a different way. I don’t automatically believe that someone else’s opinion is the ultimate truth. My truth is mine, and mine alone. And so, even after feeling disheartened following that phone call, I decided to continue writing. In those moments, I listened to myself and I did not give up. I kept going.

It all paid off a year later, when I found an amazing publisher (Jaclyn Johnston, Manifest It!® Book Publishing) who supported me and turned my dreams into reality. Within 24 hours of posting the pre-order link, my book became a number one best-seller! My biggest takeaway from that story was learning how important it is to follow your heart and your dreams. You can do great things if you work hard and have faith in yourself.

It has been said that our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share a story about a mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

When I first started establishing my business, I wanted to set myself up for success. In addition to building my brand, I was working full-time as a pediatric speech-language pathologist and caring for my young daughter. I found it difficult to juggle all of my responsibilities and make time for myself. Over time, I began feeling drained and overburdened. My biggest mistake was not setting and maintaining clear boundaries. I learned that as much as I wanted to help and care for others, I also needed to care for myself. It was an eye-opening lesson that taught me the importance of putting myself first and regularly practicing self-care.

Let’s jump to our main focus. When it comes to health and wellness, how is the work you are doing helping to make a bigger impact in the world?

My passion is helping others. Through my work as a Reiki Master and ordained minister, I have been able to help adults and children all over the world feel moments of peace and calm amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life. My work is dedicated to helping others raise their energetic vibration, connect with their authentic selves, and find mind-body-spirit balance. By helping others heal from past experiences and encouraging them to focus on making positive lifestyle changes, the world as a whole, can become a more positive place. As a woman in wellness, I know how the mind-body-spirit connection influences your overall well-being. It is my goal to empower others to take charge of their own healing and find wellness as well.

Can you share your top five “lifestyle tweaks” that you believe will help support people’s journey towards better wellbeing? Please give an example or story for each.

  1. Practice self-care. For a few minutes each day, make sure to do something that brings you joy. It could be something as small as drinking coffee from your favorite mug in the morning, singing or humming along to your favorite song, or taking a few deep, cleansing breaths before you start the day. When you feel happy, you radiate that happiness outwards.
  2. Move your body. Your body is made up of energy. Any excess energy you accumulate during the day needs somewhere to go. Engaging in any kind of physical activity will help you feel energized and happier. Take a short walk. Dance. Stretch. Do yoga. Exercising can have a positive impact on your energy, health, and well-being.
  3. Meditate. Taking a few moments to practice mindfulness will work wonders on your mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. If you find that your mind races during meditation, you can put on some calming music or listen to a guided meditation. I find that music often helps to quiet the mind, which allows for greater relaxation.
  4. Consume good things. This does not only pertain to healthy food and beverages. It also pertains to your inner thoughts, the things you pay attention to, and the things you listen to. Think good thoughts. Read good books. Watch uplifting television. Listen to a motivational podcast. Create and restate affirmations to help you focus your energy on obtaining the things you desire. By surrounding yourself with positivity, you can more easily maintain a healthy mindset.

If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of wellness to the most amount of people, what would that be?

I would start a movement about bringing more awareness to Reiki and the impact that mind-body-spirit balance has on your overall well-being. Luckily where I live in New York, many hospitals now offer Reiki as a complementary therapy to help patients reduce anxiety and stress. I love that Reiki is becoming more widely used in medical and hospital settings because when I started practicing it in 2011, many people had never heard of it before! Reiki provides so many benefits to the body as a whole, and it is so gentle, that I would love to see it become available to a larger number of people.

What are your “5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Started” and why?

  1. You will deal with people criticizing or questioning you. Not everyone shares the same beliefs and opinions that you do. That doesn’t mean your opinions and beliefs are less valid. Don’t let it stop you from sharing your authenticity with the world.
  2. You will feel a bit uncomfortable at times. Growth is hard. True growth forces you to step out of your comfort zone and do new things. That can be scary, but often, it’s worth it!
  3. It is okay to say no. As the saying goes, saying “no” to someone else often means saying “yes” to yourself. It is important to put your wants and needs first. You cannot always say yes to everything that gets thrown at you. People-pleasing is a tough habit to break. Just know that it is totally acceptable to say “no, thank you,” and move on.
  4. You will surprise yourself. Sometimes, it’s hard to recognize your own talents and gifts. There are so many things that you can do, but sometimes, you won’t notice until you look back and reflect on everything you have accomplished. Be prepared to amaze yourself!
  5. Dream big. The world is full of so many different opportunities. Many of them reveal themselves at the right place and right time. Be open to new challenges. When one door closes, another opens. Blessings will always show up for you. Get ready to scoop them up.

Sustainability, veganism, mental health, and environmental changes are big topics at the moment. Which one of these causes is dearest to you, and why?

The topic of mental health is dearest to me. Most people, including myself, have experienced a situation that has affected their mental health. Mental health plays a huge role in our overall health and well-being. When going through a challenging time, it is important to reach out to others for support. You do not have to handle it alone.
