As part of my series about the women leading the Artificial Intelligence industry, I had the pleasure of interviewing Aubrey Condor, Data Scientist at AppZen. Aubrey is a native Floridian, currently working for AppZen as a Data Scientist in San Jose, CA. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Florida in Statistics and Actuarial Science, as well as a master’s in Statistical Computing from the University of Central Florida. Prior to becoming a Data Scientist, she worked as an Actuary and a Consultant.

Thank you so much for doing this with us Aubrey! Can you share with us the ‘backstory” of how you decided to pursue this career path?

I decided to study probability and statistics in college because it was the most challenging and intriguing subject I’d encountered. I think I could spend another 10 years trying to become an expert at certain theories and related topics yet still come up short! This curiosity propelled me towards a career in Data Science.

What lessons can others learn from your story?

I used to have a serious case of “imposter syndrome”: thinking that I didn’t belong in certain high level courses, or even in the Data Science industry. I learned over time to not be fooled by the overconfidence of others around me, and instead hold strong to the belief that I’m capable of figuring out anything with sufficient time and resources.

As you know, there is an ongoing debate between prominent scientists, (personified as a debate between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg,) about whether advanced AI has the future potential to pose a danger to humanity. What is your position about this?

I don’t think that it is useful for anyone to live in fear about the future of technology. AI has helped positively advance technology in many industries, and I think this will continue.

As you know, there are not that many women in your industry. Can you share 3 things that you would you advise to other women in the AI space to thrive?

1) Your education and understanding of important topics, algorithms, theories, etc. will speak for itself.

2) Be ready to constantly adapt to change. This industry is changing and growing quickly. Don’t get left behind!

3) Learn from the experienced folks around you but don’t quit being an independent thinker.

Can you advise what is needed to engage more women into the AI industry?

We need to keep encouraging women in AI to pursue leadership positions. This will help eradicate the idea that men are more apt to work in AI or any STEM field.
