Stay connected with each individual on your team as much as possible, and lead with openness. I strive every day to deepen my personal relationships with each employee, which of course becomes harder as we continue to grow but also becomes even more important. I have lunch dates at least once or twice a week with a different employee. We also maintain open book financials, whereas we review our P&L on our monthly company call and empower every team member to share their innovations and take ownership of their roles.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Laura Brady. Laura is the founder and president of international luxury real estate firm, Concierge Auctions. In less than ten years, she has driven the firm to billions of dollars in sales and placement on Inc. Magazine’s list of fastest-growing companies for the past five years in a row. She has been named “One of the top 100 most influential leaders in real estate” by Inman News and “One of the top 25 women to watch in luxury” by Luxury Daily.

I began my career working for Neiman Marcus and later made a transition to luxury real estate. After quickly becoming one of the top real estate agents in Florida in the early 2000s, I could see the market shift coming. We founded Concierge Auctions because we saw a better way to transact luxury properties and give sellers the liquidity they needed on their timeline.

One of the most interesting stories is the way we’ve evolved the interpretation of real estate auctions. When we started our company, to most clients the word “auction” had a negative connotation and was considered a last resort. We’ve worked hard over the past 10 years to change that perception. Now with billions of dollars in sales across 18 countries, we’ve consistently overcome that negativity, and it’s rarely mentioned any more.

When we started the company we hired a Wall Street exec who once told me, “You’ll never get rich by being nice.” He was trying to toughen me up for hard discussions and negotiation, but this approach rubbed me wrong. I realized I wasn’t willing to sacrifice my personality and beliefs to be successful.

I learned that we needed to be true to ourselves and our vision. We didn’t have to be cut throat to succeed. We just had to stay the course on what we believe.

We stand out because we work with successful, interesting clients and the world’s most amazing assets. We continue to break records for the highest-priced properties sold at auction — last year a 25-acre estate in Dallas, Texas, which sold for $38.9 million, and a 19th Century chateau in Geneva Switzerland, which sold sight unseen to a buyer from Hong Kong.

Our work with Chinese buyers has been really exciting. My team and I have traveled to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong to meet with luxury buyers and build these relationships. The connections we’ve made will help provide real value to our sellers.

Know what you want out of the business and out of your life, and be persistent. Identify your unique talents, and put them to use. Above all else, take care of yourself first.

At Concierge Auctions we believe that every successful business has a responsibility to make a positive impact on the world. In 2017 we launched our Key for Key giving program, whereas we build a complete home for a family in need for every property we sell. So far we’ve built over 100 homes in Nicaragua and El Salvador, and we consistently send teams from our company to participate in the construction and meet the benefiting families. It’s truly life-changing and brings an extra boost of inspiration to our everyday business.

1. Be bold. You have to believe that you can succeed before others will believe in you.

2. Build your team carefully. Strategic hiring is paramount, as is letting go of employees who aren’t the right fit.

3. Balance risk and growth — don’t outrun your capital.

4. Streamline your focus. In the beginning every leader wears many hats, but as your business grows, you need to learn to effectively delegate.

5. Don’t forget about self care. You need to be your best self to bring your best to your team.

If I could inspire one movement it would be for other companies to instill programs similar to Key for Key — to directly correlate revenue with philanthropy, so the two grow together at the same pace. I think it’s easiest to make the commitment at the top of your financials. If you assume the cost of giving back similar to any other fixed costs, then you’ll figure out a way to cover it. On the contrary, if you’re always waiting for net profitability before philanthropy, then other initiatives will too often take priority.
