The Nostalgia Trap
Why ‘Retro’ Is Keeping Us Stuck in the Past
We love nostalgia.
We’re addicted to it, really. From the endless stream of movie reboots to 90s fashion making a comeback, it seems like every corner of culture is reaching into the past and pulling out something “retro” to parade around as cool again.
Vinyl records? Back. Polaroid cameras? Oh yeah, they’re having a moment. Even flip phones are making a comeback.
It’s like we’ve collectively decided that progress is overrated, and instead, we’re cozying up to the familiar comforts of what used to be.
But I must share something here: nostalgia — that warm, fuzzy feeling we get from reliving old trends, sounds, and aesthetics — isn’t just harmless fun. It’s a trap. And it’s keeping us stuck in a cycle where we glorify the past at the expense of looking forward.
In this endless loop of “remember when,” we’re losing the drive to create something new, to push boundaries, and to innovate.
The future is waiting, but we’re too busy scrolling through yesterday’s greatest hits to notice.
Why We Crave the Past
Let’s be real: the past is comfortable. It’s a known quantity.
