In January 2022, more electric Dacia than Tesla were registered in Germany. Overall, electric driving continues to gain ground on the German market — and at the beginning of the year, this is NOT due to VW and also NOT due to Tesla.

A look at the KBA (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt — German Federal Motor Transport Authority) registration figures for January 2022 reveals some surprising details. Let’s start with the most registered electric cars: Here, surprisingly, the Fiat 500 leads the registration statistics as a small car. The Tesla Model 3, which regularly leads in such statistics, is only in 25th place with only about 20% of the registrations of the little runabout from Italy.

Even though Volkswagen leads the brand statistics for BEV registrations, that’s only 60% of BEVs registered in the comparable month of 2021. Here, both the missing e-Golf and e-Up tear a gap that the ID.4 cannot fill. The ID.3 also only comes to half of the registrations compared to January 2021. Other manufacturers are happy to fill this gap, e.g. Hyundai, Opel or also Skoda within the VW Group, who score well with the Enyaq compared to the previous year.

All German premium manufacturers are making gains: Mercedes grows the most compared to last year’s start, Audi leads the statistics, at BMW the i4 and the iX slowly start to achieve first notable registration figures.

Overall, a lot is really happening in the small car segment as well, which is a very good development from my point of view: Fiat 500, MINI, Smart, Opel Corsa, Dacia Spring and many, many more.

Stay tuned for an update next month.
