Winter is gone and summer is knocking on the door. You can adapt yourself but your car needs a toddler like attention this summer. How attentive are you to meet the expectations that your car will need?

Here we’re bringing you 8 pointers that you need to follow this summer:

1. Adopt A Sunshade or A Window Visor

As the temperature goes high, your car interior still needs to be cool. It is wiser to buy and keep a sunshade or a window visor. Every time you step out for a longer time, don’t forget to place the sunshade. You can also keep a window visor at the rear window as well.

2. Wax Your Vehicle

With wax as the extra layer of protection, your car will be protected from the sun damage. This will also help in cleaning the car in case of dust, pollen droppings, or bug-splatter.

3. Clean the Air Conditioner

Plug out the air filter, and clean it to remove the dirt and the dust from clogging the system and impeding proper air flow. Sometimes the debris from the condenser coils also clog the drain line. If this happens, you will find water pooling around the bottom. In such a case, remove and replace the air filter.

4. Check the Battery

High temperatures can degrade the battery power. With its constant use, sulphuric acid gets accumulated and corrodes the terminals and hurts the connection. This can lead to a dead battery. Before summer, get it checked and get it replaced if it is overly degraded.

5. Check the Coolant

Check and refill the coolant fluid. Coolant is also termed as anti-freeze. This keeps your car run well in extreme temperatures. Fill up the coolant till the ‘F’ mark and then you are good to drive.

6. Tyre Pressure

Heat expands the tyres, so the tyre pressure need to be maintained at an optimum level. Also, optimum pressure reduces the chance of tyre-bursts.

7. Check Hoses and Belts

With time and heat, hoses get cracks, leaks and loose connections. Electrochemical degradation slowly eats away the rubber hose material from the inside. Specially look out for the parts nearest to clamps where hose connects to the radiator. Check if belts have become excessively slick or smooth.

8. Keep a Good Emergency Kit

Summer invites a lot of unnecessary health issues as well. Keep an emergency kit easily reachable in the car. Equip the kit with essential first aid, tire gauge, foam tyre sealant, jumper cables, reflective triangles, flashlight, drinking water, a multi-tool, blanket and sealed snacks.

9. Get a Radiator Checkup

A clogged radiator makes it harder for coolant to pass through. Get a radiator checkup before summer to ensure the radiator doesn’t lead to leakage. If you find the radiator to be clogged, ask the mechanic to flush out the cooling system if necessary.

10. Check Tyre Tread

Check Tyre Tread with the coin test. Take a coin and insert it upside down along your treads. If you can see the top of the coin’s head, the treads are dead and you might need new tyres. Consider replacing the tyre in such a case.

11. Check Brake Pads

The brake pads need a regular replacement after some 250,000 miles. Even if you have not covered such miles, you still need to keep an eye on its performance. With the heat, sometimes the brake pads gradually become frictionless and might not work at the required time. Before it runs out, you must get it checked.

12. Park in the shade

Avoid parking in the direct sunlight. Consider parking in the shade, so that the car remains cool and is saved from overheating. This is a good practice indeed to include in your daily driving habits.

13. Check the Hydraulic Fluid

Hydraulic fluid is found in power steering systems. With the overheating, sometimes this can cause leakage. Replacing the fluid is a cheap way to prevent power steering issues.

14. Evaluate your Car Alignment

If your car pulls to one side, your steering wheel vibrates, or your steering wheel isn’t centered, get your car’s alignment checked. Specially before the summer, you need to get a thorough checkup to ensure your car is fit to drive.

At the end, you need to be careful of all the repercussions that might arise due to your calculated decision. Remember always, prevention is better than the cure.
