Users can securely store AVAX using the Ledger Nano S hardware wallets

Ecosystem growth on Avalanche is imperative. Leading up to mainnet launch, our team focused on strengthening the platform and building out tooling for developers: Chainlink, Whiteblock, Quantstamp, and more. Moving forward, we will maintain this diligence and expand our efforts towards all solutions that benefit users both for developers and users.

Today, we’re adding Ledger, the leader in cryptocurrency and blockchain security, to our rapidly growing suite of solutions available on Avalanche, enabling users to securely store and access their AVAX tokens using the Ledger Nano S hardware wallets. Both wallets will protect users’ private keys while providing seamless access to their AVAX tokens.

As part of our Avalanche-X grant program, we awarded Obsidian Systems a grant to build the Avalanche Ledger Wallet. The team at Obsidian Systems displayed great professionalism and delivered a very high-quality app for Ledger integration. The wallet passed a 3rd party security audit from Least Authority and has been made available for download via Ledger Live in “experimental mode”.

Hardware wallets play a vital role in helping users secure their cryptocurrency holdings and digital assets. It does so by storing your private key–which is used to authorize transactions from your Avalanche Wallet–offline in a device. For transactions involving the tokens or assets whose private keys are stored on a Ledger, the user must have physical access to the device to execute the transaction.

In doing so, users are adding another layer of security between their assets and malicious actors. Even if a bad actor is successful at attacking cryptocurrency users’ digital properties, they too would need the physical device to complete their theft.

For more guidance on how to use the Ledger Nano S with Ledger Live and Avalanche Wallet, please see the tutorial prepared by Gabriel Cardona, Senior Test Engineer at Ava Labs.
