Evolving the Ava Labs Visual Identity

Leading up to the launch of Avalanche, it was clear that Ava Labs needed to simply convey its role in building decentralized solutions.

Back in June 2020, we announced a consolidation of our brand identity to make the connections (and distinctions) between Ava Labs, Avalanche, and the Avalanche (AVAX) token. That effort was part of a longer-term approach to establishing Avalanche as a project that is increasingly driven by and for its community.

Ava Labs has always been the launchpad for Avalanche, and while we’ll always play a role in supporting the network and its users, we aspire to lessen our influence over the platform’s direction as Avalanche governance begins to take hold. This is the natural progression of all great decentralized networks.

The successful completion of the Avalanche (AVAX) token sale and the launch of Avalanche’s mainnet marked the first step in testing our brand consolidation efforts; Avalanche’s brand mark exemplifies the platform as a whole, while the brand mark for AVAX symbolizes a small piece of the Avalanche platform.

Seeing visual representations of all aspects of Avalanche is inspiring and keeps the team going. From original, full-feature content to the playful meme, we’re seeing Avalanche everywhere, globally. With mainnet launch on September 21, Avalanche is achieving decentralization at an unprecedented pace–over 500 full, block-producing validator nodes within the first week and rapidly growing community across all channels (to date, the Avalanche Twitter has grown 112% since the token sale on July 15).

With more participants joining and growing the platform every day, it’s become clear that it’s time to make the distinction between our team and Avalanche even clearer with a refreshed brand identity for Ava Labs.

Tipping Our Hats to Avalanche

Over the last few months, our design team was tasked with improving the visual distinction between Ava Labs, the team behind the network, and Avalanche, the decentralized platform that Ava Labs is building. The brief: embody Ava Labs’ core ethos, while incorporating brand elements from Avalanche, the first launch by Ava Labs. After multiple concepts and revisions, we came to a final decision on the logo.

Ava Labs makes it simple to launch finance applications using blockchain technology. Our mission is to empower people to build an open, simple, and democratic internet of finance.

We found that the winning logo design for Ava Labs embodied a few key visual elements. Simplicity guided the design decision through and through. No fancy logo marks or visual flairs. Ava Labs is a team building next-generation decentralized technologies and services, and people need to be able to cut through the noise. Ava Labs is prominent, front, and center.

The “L” in Labs also signifies one side of a block within a blockchain; each side is measured evenly to create an outline of the block. The period at the end of “Ava Labs” is where we pay homage to Avalanche, the platform that started it all. With a light splash of Avalanche red (for all of the designers out there, it’s #E84142), we’re able to bring finality to the brand.

A clear visual identity for Ava Labs will enable us to grow our suite of brands with confidence. We currently have Avalanche, Avalanche Wallet, Avalanche Explorer, and many more services and solutions to come. Thank you to everyone contributing to Avalanche’s success thus far. We couldn’t be more excited for what lies ahead.
