It has been a bit of a whirlwind year for me personally, as well as for my company, Avalow. This past September marks our first official year as a company, and it is amazing to see the journey we’ve taken to be where we are today! I think I can speak for all of us at Avalow, that we are all thankful for the opportunity to help people grow food in their own yards, and to educate others on how to grow a bountiful garden. This is the perfect time to pause and reflect on the year and what we are thankful for, as well as what we are excited for in our future!

Natural Compost

Each season has its own best-practices. By the end of summer and early fall, I am ready to say goodbye to basil and squashes, and hello to lush leafy greens! With the change in temperature and season comes the natural decay of plants. Remove the plants at soil level by clipping them at the base, keeping the roots in the soil to naturally break down. The roots will provide nutrients to the soil as well as provide nourishment to the worms and bugs in your garden’s ecosystem.

I love to crouch down and look at the natural canopy under the plants. The garden ecosystem is a flurry of activity and the healthier the soil, the more diverse the ecosystem will be!

The Meditative Power of Plants

It was the daily stroll through my vegetable garden, coffee in hand (often in PJs), that planted the seed for the creation of Avalow. I am grateful to have the opportunity to share my love of gardens with so many other people with the Avalow Experience Garden at our headquarters in Santa Rosa, CA, as well as each unique client garden.

Ever-Changing Seasonal Flavors

There is some confusion on what is in season over the fall months (no, butternut squash does not grow in the fall). This is a great time to grow your own delicious fall vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts to name a few), or check in with your local farmer’s market for seasonal veggies. Fall vegetables such as kohlrabi and leeks are rich in flavor and are often overlooked. I love to experiment with fall flavors and am so very thankful that we can create new recipes as the seasons change.

Avalow Retail Launch

In the new year, we will be opening our doors and showcasing local Sonoma County items that will inspire the best use of your vegetable garden! Avalow will be the home of fun must-have kitchen gadgets, delicious food items to compliment your cooking, as well as Avalow attire (pictured) and garden tools.

We hope you are all having a wonderful year and encourage you to reflect on what makes you happy.

Cheers,

Amanda Dunker

Co-founder of Avalow. I adore fresh food and a good book. We don’t have to agree, but hopefully we will learn something new.
