VR makes us all apprentices again allowing us to start again from zero to dream of something “new“ — and to make it “real“ in a virtual world. VR can be the key to many “new worlds” but it also runs the risk that in these worlds, scenarios of the “old world” will continue. How will we avoid this and in what form will VR take shape?
Wolf Siegert boldly asks these questions as he explores the future of VR as our keynotes speaker on Day 1 at AWE Europe 2016 which takes place in Berlin on October 18–19, 2016.
Siegert is the Founder and Director of IRIS Media, an organization that looks at media technologies and their implementation to provide expert perspectives for the future of media and communications. Previous to becoming the Director of IRIS Media in 1987, Siegert was as an expert in theatre, film and video, a lecturer and visiting professor in Europe and East Asia, a journalist, a TV producer responsible for launching new cable and satellite programmes, and author of the first European patent for a navigation system.
Siegert realised his early ambitions to stimulate new ideas and test them in “real life” as well as on stage and on screen. He went one step further by attempting to redefine and align cultural and technological realms, being dubbed thus a “Changineer”. Along the way, he earned two degrees, topping this off with a Doctorate of Philosophy. Meanwhile, he has had a long lasting impact upon the broadcasting, telecommunications and film distribution businesses in Germany, Europe and the US. Wolf was a co-initiator of the Transmediale Festival and he helped restart the Babelsberg Studios. He is President of the German Chapter of the Digital Cinema Society, Executive Board member of the German Federation of Journalists in Berlin, as well as one of the founding members of the Berlin-Brandenburg VR Association.
