We have a story to tell, which is all about the AWS cloud security summit ‘22. We were amazed by the overwhelming turnout of young professionals at the recently concluded AWS Security Summit ‘22.

About the Event

The event, the first in-person summit hosted by the AWS Cloud Security User Group—West Africa was titled AWS Security Summit Nigeria 2022 and aimed at bringing together young information security enthusiasts (new and experienced) from West Africa who are interested in all aspects of AWS Cloud security to learn about security best practices with AWS IAM, AWS detection tools—AWS Config (Compliance as Code) and Amazon GurdDuty, and network with one another.

The summit, which took place on Saturday, November 19, 2022, started at exactly 10 a.m. (WAT) and lasted until 3 p.m. (WAT) at the Chemline House Training and Event Centre, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria.

Attendance

The attendance was very impressive considering that this was our first in-person event since the User Group's inception in June 2022. The event was a hybrid model in that we had some attendees attend virtually alongside the in-person attendees. We had over 120 people physically attend out of the 421 people registered for the event. We also have over 200 views of the session so far on the user group’s YouTube Channel. Thanks to our social media team for the great job done through publicity👏

Event Sessions and Speakers

The event featured five information-packed sessions as follows:

The first session was on “Security Best Practices with AWS IAM" by Ademola Sanusi, a Solution Architect at AWS.

The second session was on “Compliance as Code (AWS Config)” by Tayo Fatoki (tayo fatoki), a Solutions Architect || DevOps || DevSecOps || Cloud Expert.

The third session was on “Protect and Secure Your AWS Cloud Environment with Amazon GuardDuty,” by Imoh Etuk, a Cloud Infrastructure Architect and AWS Community Builder.

The fourth session was a panel discussion where Olajumoke Toriola, Blessing Ogechi Nwojiji and Imoh Etuk moderated by Adeleke Tolulope talked about the benefits of being part of a user group community, what the user group has achieved so far and what it hopes to achieve, plans we have in place for the user group members, upcoming learning sessions, etc.

The session was wrapped up with a very interesting session on “career growth as a professional” by Ejiro Aremu, a cloud architect.

Each session was followed by a quiz session, and the winners were given AWS credit vouchers and vouchers to write their AWS Security Specialty Certification Exam.

Apart from the in-person speakers, we also had virtual moderators in the person of David Okeyode and Chiugo Okpala moderating the event on the User Group’s YouTube channel through live streaming for virtual attendees. In case you missed out, you can catch up with the recorded session here.

Next Steps

Following the event, the group leaders have defined an AWS Security study schedule that will begin on December 12, 2022, and run until the end of January 2023, as a user group with a focus on empowering the next generation of AWS Cloud Security Specialists in West Africa and beyond through the holding of seminars, workshops, and virtual meetups. This will be led by many community members who have volunteered to share their knowledge. You can register here to attend the first session in the series.
