Axie Infinity has plans to shakeup the meta with a major overhaul as majority of its cards get a makeover before the start of Axie Infinity: Origins’ second competitive season.

The team has partnered with several content creators within the Axie Infinity ecosystem to leek the new cards to the community one class at a time. The event, which took place from December 8 to December 13, was hosted by RuthlessRedge and GilaCees, and was co-streamed in Spanish, Tagalog, and Portugese. The card reveals come after Sky Mavis has released the updated runes and charms for the second season.

“I’m hopeful that [these card changes] allows for more diversity and choice in the Axies that you can choose for arena,” Kyroh, an Axie Infinity content creator, shared. “I’m excited to see how the new mechanics affect the game and with so much changing I think we’re in for a pretty fresh experience going into season 2.”

The card changes came with new mechanics that open up a lot more variety when it comes to Axie team compositions and strategies. As for the Axies themselves, the changes made each Axie class more distinct from one another as each class seems to have their own specialty.

Setting Up The Second Season

Beasts were the dominant class during season one, with rage beast builds filling up the arena throughout the season. Season two seems to have scaled back on the beast dominance from a fury strategy, but introduced new ways to play around with the Bleed debuff through the new mechanic, grievous wound.

The bug reveal seemed buzzing with excitement since the team opted to reintroduce discard mechanics, a classic strategy back during Axie Infinity: Classic, back to the bug class. A new mechanic called Cocoon, gives the class a potential tank build as it for a potential brick wall strategy to come into play for bugs.

“I think bugs caught a lot of peoples eyes,” Kyroh continued. “Being a big fan of bugs in v2 I was super excited to see that discards are coming back into play! I also think we’re in for a very venomous season if you catch my drift.”

We’ve seen a lot of poison builds centered around the reptile Axie class. A rework of the card Grass Snake got poison build users excited as it now adds more poison stacks to their opponent. Reptiles also got a new mechanic called Spike and Bloodspike, which essentially reflects damage back to the opponent.

The bird class had the most new mechanics introduced, but most were mainly reworks of the effects of their cards. Mavis now summons a bird that grants and destroys energy fragments, while Robin now deals damage to all enemies and scales that damage up with every hit. However, the changes to Kestrel and Eggshell were too drastic that the community thought that the cards lost their essence. The team decided to change the mechanics again, which will be released at a future date.

Plant Axies still have the familiar leafy mechanic which was seen in the Arena during season 1, but the plant class now also has the sleep mechanic, which got a rework for season 2. Sleep now works similar to stun in Axie Infinity: Classic, where sleep can be cancelled out upon ther use of a card, or upon receiving an attack.

Aqua Axies also had new mechanics that played around with effects that the community is already used to, like jinx and bubble. But a major change to the Aqua class, aside from the energy fragment gains, was the shift of the class towards either an area of effect (AOE) strategy. It is also good to note that Aquas have the flexibility to choose between the closest or furthers enemy, and that it has a 9 energy cost card that deals 400 damage in Tiny Fan.

“I hope everybody really enjoyed this event. It took a lot of work to get here,” Hantao, Axie’s creator program lead, said while giving a shoutout to everyone involved during the stream. “It was tough to put it on, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. This is the first of its kind and I’m hoping there’s going to be more. If you want to be part of the next one, make sure you join the Axie creator program.”

Axie Infinity will have a townhall on their discord server on Friday at 2PM UTC (9AM EST/10PM PHT/2PM GMT). This will be the avenue for the community to gather and ask questions around the card reveals, and other aspects of the second season.

“I’m very excited for season 2,” Kyroh echoed the sentiment of majority of the community. “I think there is a lot that will be happening during season 2 in the entire ecosystem so it should be pretty entertaining! I wish they could drop it today!”
