Majority of the players opted to use their $25 allowance to purchase a budget beast build during Day 1 of the Off-Season Invitationals.

Players were only allowed to use rare runes and charms or lower during this leg of the invitationals. A total of eight players were invited by Axie Infinity to participate, but in the end SteamedBun from the Philippines brought home the championship.

“I’m actually surprised to be selected. I know many people expect bigger and well known names to play in this event that is why I’m so thankful for the opportunity,” SteamedBun told the AxieArchives. “All players went all out with their theory crafting and building their own comps, which amuses me. Looking forward to battling them in the Arena!

Belieber was the stand out build from this leg of the tournament as both finalists, SteamedBun and Pyschedellic, paraded their version of the team. Other beast builds showcased in day one included an energy control beast team from Shoe, a triple nutcracker build from Berlin, and a bleed team from OKG. Third placer, HermonTV, paraded a triple AOE feather bird team, while MMG Axie Master’s League Champion, De-Hi, went for a triple Aqua with double anemone build.

All Filipino Finals

Axie Philippines was one proud communtiy as both finalists represented the country during the first day. Both players opted for a belieber rage team with a slight difference. Psychedellic’s team had a utility bug in the midlane, while SteamedBun opted for a more offensive build with a three belieber beasts composition.

During the first game, Psychedellic almost came back from a 2v1 situation as his backliner entered fury mode and was able to place vulnerable on SteamedBun’s last axie. However, belieber wasn’t as effective with no rage stacks available causing SteamedBun to live for another turn and finish off Psychedellic’s last axie with an Axie Kiss, axe revenge card, cottontail and Ronin play.

Pyschedellic found himself in a similar scenario in the second game, but ultimately was able to pull off a 200 damage belieber at turn 6, and again at turn 10, to tie the match at one a piece. But SteamedBun took control of the third game, again with a 2v1 scenario in his favor by turn 8, and finished it off with a near 200 damage belieber and sword play.

A crucial Robin play on the 6th turn puts Psychedellic on the favorable side of a 2v1 situation for the first time in the finals. That ultimately lead to him tying the series at two a piece and force a winner take all game 5 for the championship. A double Beliber on turn 7 of the final match left Psycedellic’s last axie vulenrable for an Axie Kiss Death Mark for another 2v1 scenario which ultimately won the championship for SteamedBun.

“I feel like in this tournament I am one of the underdogs. Which motivates me more to prove myself as a serious competitor,” SteamedBun shared. “It feels surreal winning my first tournament in Axie Infinity. I’m just happy to have my guild and friends who helped and guided me throughout this tournament. And to every person who watched the games, I hope you had fun. One more thing, Belieber is OP!”

An Awesome Event

The first day of the Off-Season invitationals gave us a taste of what strategies can pop up during the first era of Season 2, where only rare runes and charms are available for players to use. Participants of day 1 couldn’t help but share their experiences through Twitter.

Day 2 of the Off-Season Invitational resumes on January 10 at 9:30am EST and 10:30pm PHT. Big names on the second day are Axie Open Manila champion, SpamAndRice, and MMG Axie Master’s League champion, MINO. But don’t count the other participants out! Catch day two live on Axie Infinity’s Twitch channel.
