Raden Adjeng Kartini was born into an aristocratic Javanese family in the Dutch East Indies. From her younger years, Kartini struck as a brilliant, independent, brave, and assertive person. During a period where further education was not an option for her and other girls in Javanese society, Kartini rigorously advocated for women’s education.

Many decades and generations have passed, yet Kartini’s vision of building a society that values women’s equality remains to aspire millions of women in Indonesia and globally.

How has Kartini’s spirit inspired us at Ayoconnect? What can we learn from her, and how do we continue her fight? Continue reading to learn more about our team’s thoughts on women’s empowerment in the workplace.

Watching more women, especially in the tech industry, stepping up their performance and dedication in the work field makes me feel empowered — women must be able to stand firm on their own feet, regardless of any social prejudice after all. We never know what will happen in the future, so having a career or skillsets that empowered us to be strong and independent is important. More than ever, I believe it’s vital for women nowadays to understand that we are absolutely able to excel in the workplace. Many great women have proven that they can go beyond in doing their roles’ assignments and this should be enough .

I feel like women tend to be hesitant or even choose to be quiet when talking about their success because society is more gravitated toward men’s accomplishment journey. I see the commemoration day of RA Kartini as momentum for shining lights into the importance of women’s empowerment. At the time when everyone has the liberty of expressing themselves on any platform, women have to acknowledge that the intelligence, tenderness, and fierceness within their hearts are — without a doubt — a gift to be proud of. We shouldn’t feel any slight remorse in share our achievement because each time we dare ourselves to speak up, one might get inspired to echo the same spirit.

This might be a hard pill to swallow, but a lot of women still don’t have the liberty to voice their rights, especially in the workplace. I believe women must have their own opinion and choice regardless of any social pressure. I could proudly say that Ayoconnect is concerned and try to approach the issues through its regulations, support, and open communication culture. I feel content from knowing that the organization I work in provides the support needed such as the Working Mother policy. It’s a fact that those thoughtful actions play a role in keeping us striving to become more fabulous, endearing, and proactive.

Kartini day, for me, is an opportunity for raising awareness on the topics surrounding working women that needed to be discussed more openly such as equal pay, harassment at work, and workplace discrimination — it can go on and on. Until women enjoy the same rights as men, this inequality is everyone’s problem. Above all that, I solemnly believe that women’s rights are human rights and therefore every woman should always have the right to work and be educated. It might seem like an obvious point, but we cannot have a free and equal society until everyone is free and equal. With more education and awareness, we can empower more women to fend for themselves. Education is a powerful thing, whether it’s traditional education or simply by experience 💪🏼
