How to Add a Data Disk to a Virtual Machine in Azure
A data disk is used to store application data or other necessary data, a data disk is a managed disk that is connected to a virtual computer. Data disks are given a letter of your choice and registered as SCSI drives. A maximum of 32,767 gigabytes can fit on each data drive. In this Article, I will walk you through how to add a data disk to your windows Virtual Machine.
Step1: Create a Windows Virtual Machine in Azure Portal
After you have created, click on Disks button of the settings section of the VM that you created.
Step2: click on the plus sign to create a disk and proceed
Ensure that the changes to the virtual machine are saved
Step3: Click on connect in the settings section and select RDP so as to be able to download the RDP file
Step4 : Go to your download folder and open the RDP file
When you do this, a pop up will appear, click on the connect button
Next, you will be prompted for the admin user name and password you created when you were creating the VM
Click on Yes when the next pop up for certificate verification appears and wait for a while.
Close all unnecessary screen pop us until you see this
Step5: Enter diskmgmt.msc in the search box of windows start menu.
When this is done the Disk Management console opens
The next step would be to initialize the disc
Disk Management recognizes that you have a new, uninitialized disk and the Initialize Disk window appears. Just click Ok and proceed to show you the newly initialized disc
The new disk shows up as being unallocated. Choose New simple volume by performing a right-click anywhere on the disk. Opens the window for the New Simple Volume Wizard. You will even realize that amongst all the available disc, only the one you just initialized will give you the option of New simple Volume.
Proceed through the wizard, keeping all of the defaults, and when you’re done select Finish.
You need format the new disk before you can use it, if the formating window pops up, proceed with it but if it does not, right-click on the disk and select Format disk.
When the formatting is complete, select OK.
