4 Energy Saving Tips for a More Eco-Friendly Home

4 Energy Saving Tips for a More Eco-Friendly Home

Going green at home is more than just a passing trend. It can actually have a big impact on both the environment and your wallet.

Even just taking some small steps towards making your home more eco-friendly can really add up to serious savings on your energy bill and fewer maintenance costs for your heating and cooling equipment.

It can also raise the value of your home, which can make it easier to sell. Below, I go over four simple energy-saving tips that can make your home more eco-friendly.

Install a Smart Thermostat

An incredible development in smart home technology, smart thermostats are an eco-friendly investment that can lead to very tangible savings.

Smart thermostats let you program your temperature preferences for different times throughout the day and change those settings from your smartphones.

These very useful smart thermostats also allow you to see energy-usage trends to discover where you may be able to save energy and money.

It’s estimated that a smart thermostat can help you save 10–15 percent on heating and cooling costs.

Clean Windows

Many homes in the Southern states and other areas have large windows designed to let in the bright sun.

Did you know that by just keeping your windows clean, you can save some extra energy?

Not only will clean windows facilitate more natural light, but they can even improve the resale value of your home.

Well-maintained and professionally cleaned windows don’t just look pretty.

As one of the first things a potential buyer sees when touring your home, clean windows let them know that the home has been well-maintained.

Landscape for Energy Efficiency

Nice landscaping can instantly increase a home’s curb appeal and bring up its resale value, but did you know how you choose to landscape can save you money on your energy costs, too?

If you choose to design your landscape with energy efficiency in mind, you can use trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and vines to keep your home cool in the summer or insulate against heat loss in the winter.

Shading your AC unit, for example, can provide up to a 10 percent boost in efficiency!

If you want to get even more eco-friendly, use only native plants that are adapted to your local environment, which makes them easier to maintain, and they won’t damage the local ecosystem like other potentially invasive flora.

Repair or Replace Your Roof

If the time has come to repair or replace your roof, make sure that you choose an energy-efficient roof that can reflect back most of the sun’s heat instead of absorbing it into your home.

Roofing that can reflect solar energy back into the environment will keep your home cooler, cutting down on your energy costs.

Tile roofing is a great option for many Southern homes, as it can last up to fifty years, is very resistant to damage, and can really help to keep your home cool. Best of all, tiles are made using an eco-friendly process.

These four energy-saving tips are a great place to begin your journey towards greenifying and selling your home.

If done right, making your house eco-friendly is a great investment that will make your home more comfortable to live in while also making it more valuable.
