Beginning Crochet

I thought I’d write a little bit about beginning crochet tips for the newbie crocheter..

To begin…

Don’t think that you must throw a lot of money into learning the basics of crochet. All you really need to start is a skein of yarn, a hook, and plenty of patience.

I suggest using a large crochet hook. A size J (10), or a size K (10 1/2) would be best. Both of them will create large loops/stitches so that you can easily see what you’re doing. A trip to your local Walmart store’s craft section should avail one of these hooks for you.

Along with a crochet hook, also purchase one skein of a light colored 4 weight yarn. Some good colors to start with are white, light pink, light yellow, antique white, light blue, or a light tan. By using a light colored yarn you’ll be able to see your stitches much easier. Stitches made in a dark colored yarn tend to hide, making it hard for a beginner to see their stitches. So, for now, save the darker colored yarns for when you have more experience.

Also, when buying your first skein, make sure it is a plain, 4 weight yarn…nothing fancy. No shaggy eyelash yarns. No yarns with sequins, or glitters, and definitely no Home Spun yarn. These are all lovely, but they aren’t good for a beginner to start with. Just a plain light…
