CAT tools, glossaries, and machine translation
Translation is a complex process and it becomes even more so if the texts being worked on are particularly long or if they are part of a larger project that continues for months or years.
Imagine having to take care of the localisation of a website whose contents increase and are updated over time or the translation of a series of books or, even, instruction manuals for different series of devices from a particular manufacturer. These are many more or less different texts that, however, are linked to a specific context and must be as coherent as possible with each other.
A translation, in fact, is not unique. The same text can be translated in different ways, maintaining more or less the same meaning, but completely altering the style, tone, and terminology. However, this should not happen if you work on one of these long projects.
Perhaps it may seem sufficient to rely on memory to remember all these aspects, but I assure you that it is not at all. Memory tends to fade away over time, so much so that we struggle to recognize what we have already written, even when we find it before our eyes. And, as the translated material increases, we certainly can’t go and re-read everything every time.
