Hamburg is our second stop on our tour through Germany with the goal of understanding more about sustainable development. As I love taking pictures of special moments with the hope that when I am scrolling the pictures I can feel the same way I was feeling when I was taking the picture, I decided to share with you my top 5 favorite moments in Hamburg (not in any specific order).

When we first got to Hamburg, we went on a boat tour, which helped me to have a better sense of the city as I was able to better understand the city’s port importance. During the tour, we were able to see the second biggest container vessel in the entire world, I know it sounds cool but it was even cooler in the moment when our boat was sooo close to the container that it felt like an attraction in an amusement park.

After the boat tour, we went to this really cute street with different restaurants, and the street was so cute!! It was genuinely interesting to see how just a few miles away from the port — one of the main forces of the Hamburg economy — , there was a street that seemed peaceful and tranquil.

Another highlight of our stay at Hamburg was visiting H&R. That was my first time being able to see a place that produces mineral oils. I found extremely interesting the presentation we watched regarding the project target of testing Power-to-Gas (hydrogen) by using hydrogen from existing electrolysis. It was my first time learning about that concept and I really enjoyed the interactive explanations in the room where the presentation took place.

Later that day, we had a bonding dinner with our Professor and some peers. The dinner was extremely fun and I loved learning more about everyone! During the dinner we shared our different perspective in the trip and it was very insightful to learn about same experiences but different angles, which made me reflect on past experiences and deeply think about them.

Lastly, right before we left Hamburg, we met with the politician Monika Griefahn — who is one of the co-founders of Greenpeace. She shared more about her journey and answered all of our questions with enthusiasm. Personally, I really enjoyed her explanation on what she thinks about implements a circular economy system, and when I asked her what is one specific challenge she believe companies might face when trying to switch to a circular economy system, and she responded the companies would have to even find banks that are part of the circular economy, which is really hard. This discussion really made me understand how much of a long process implementing a circular economy would be.

The politician’s office was located in this building

I absolutly loved my time in Hamburg and I really hope to be back there soon!
