Introducing Alexander
I am Alexander, a junior at Babson College. I am taking this course as I want to learn more about German culture as well as the sustainable development practices that Germany is well known for. I was motivated to apply as this course was comprehensive in that it was structured around the learning of German history, culture, economics, politics, and environmental sustainability. These topics are all of interest to me, and of course, I also wanted to take a trip to Germany to learn first-hand while experiencing the rich culture. The topics I am most looking forward to are New Government and Current Issues as well as Environmental Sustainability. Germany has been very successful in fostering business and commerce while maintaining a strong social safety net for its citizens and I look forward to better understanding how their government achieves this. Germany’s commitment to environmental protection and renewable energy serves as a model for other countries, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of transitioning to a greener economy. This is important to our world because it contributes to the global effort to combat climate change, preserve natural resources, and promote a sustainable future for all. By understanding and possibly emulating Germany’s strategies, other nations can take similar steps towards environmental sustainability, which is crucial for the well-being of the planet and future generations.
I am excited to visit Berlin, I have been there once to visit family many years ago and I remember it being spectacular. Visiting Berlin again as a now college student will be an incredible experience due to its rich historical significance and vibrant cultural scene. The city is a living museum, steeped in history and I am especially excited for the Red City Hall of Berlin visit. I am very interested in learning about housing and social sustainability in a large metro area like Berlin, Germany. Learning about social sustainability includes understanding how to create cohesive communities. This knowledge is vital in understanding how different cultures can coexist harmoniously, respecting each other’s values and beliefs. One question that I am wondering about is how Germany’s government feels about the phasing out of nuclear energy. Has this been a topic of debate, or has it been a largely unanimous decision in phasing out nuclear energy? From what I’ve read, Germany had introduced a policy known as Energiewende in the early 2000’s, which represented an initial shift in the country’s energy policy. The Fukushima nuclear disaster of 2011 acted as a catalyst for the German government to accelerate its plans to phase out nuclear power. While the reason they did makes sense, I want to learn more about how they have implemented renewable sources of energy in place of nuclear power. I am aware that the EU provides financial support and incentives for renewable energy projects through various funds and programs. This funding helped Germany finance the development and deployment of renewable technologies, such as wind, solar, and bioenergy projects. Speaking with people from the German government will allow me to ask questions in a unique setting and I am very excited to be able to have the opportunity to converse with them about a topic so pertinent in this day and age.
