Bacchus Half Marathon at Denbies Wine Estate

Denbies Wine Estate is perhaps slightly unusual in that it hosts a madcap running event once a year.

Called the Bacchus Marathon, there’s three events: a five mile walk, a half marathon and an actual marathon.

Unlike most running events, this one has wine and food stops with entertainment, as well as a hog roast at the end.

It’s the British equivalent of the Médoc Marathon, held in one of the famous wine regions of Bordeaux.

Wine and Hog Roast? Sounded good to me, so I convinced my wife and some friends to join me, and signed up to the half marathon (no more Marathons!).

The event has been on my list for a while, not only because I’m a keen runner/drinker but also because I had got married the year before.

After spending a good few minutes walking up some of the steeper trails and getting waylaid by the cake and rosé stand, I finished the run in a semi-respectable 2:28:43.

Not too bad considering the impractical Superman outfit which I was wearing!
