Top Ten U Sports First Semester Game Scores
One Semester come and gone in the U Sports 2016–17 season and as we enter the winter break the top-ten in national ranking is set. Carleton, UBC, Calgary, Ottawa, Ryerson, Brock, Mcgill, Alberta, McMaster and Dalhousie make up that top-ten for the month of December. But what is the U Sports Top Ten individual games of the semester so far? Well to decide this we’ll use Game Score.
What is Game Score?
Game score is a metric developed by basketball statistician John Hollinger as an extension of Player Efficiency Rating (as well as a simpler alternative).
It is intended to give a “total perspective” on a player’s statistical performance in a basketball game, taking into account every statistic listed on a player’s box score.
Game score is intended to be used for a single game, and represent a parallel number but alternative to points scored — 40 being a fantastic game score, and 10 an average performance.
Game Score (GmSc) is calculated as:
Game Score = Points Scored + (0.4 x Field Goals) — (0.7 x Field Goal Attempts) — (0.4 x (Free Throw Attempts — Free Throws)) + (0.7 x Offensive Rebounds) + (0.3 x Defensive Rebounds) + Steals + (0.7 x Assists) + (0.7 x Blocks) — (0.4 x Personal Fouls) — Turnovers
Here are the Top Ten Game Scores of Semester One:
#1 Marquis Clayton
Marquis Clayton had the highest game score of the U Sports Basketball season in Saint Mary’s second game of the season at home against Acadia. The 10th highest scorer in the country BALLED OUT with 38 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists in the Huskies 97–89 victory over the Acadia Axemen.
#2 Connor Wood
No player has scored more in a game this season than Connor Wood in late November against the Laurentian Voyageurs. The #1 Carleton Ravens are off to another great start as they enter the break 5–0. Connor Wood has 5 national championships in his 4 years in the league and is ON A MISSION for his 5th. The 39 points 11 rebounds and 3 assists led the Ravens to the 88–71 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs.
#3 Adika Peter-McNeilly
The 10 three-pointers were the most ever in a game for a Ryerson Ram as Adika broke his cousin Ryan’s record against the Mustangs. (If you want to see the ten threes ranked you can watch right here) His 36 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists in the Rams 105–76 victory over the Western Mustangs.
#4 Brody Clarke
Playing for Roy Rana on the Canadian U19 team was just the beginning for Brody Clarke who is blossoming into a star in Edmonton. He ranks top ten in the country in rebounds and blocks. The Toronto native made his debut last year after recovering from two serious knee injuries. Brody Clarke began his 2016–17 with his best game posting 35 points to go along with 14 rebounds in a 76–64 Bears victory over Brandon.
#5 Kendrick Jolin
The #7 Mcgill Redmen have needed performances like this from Kendrick Jolin to stay afloat in a competitive RSEQ conference. His 34 points, 3 rebounds and 5 steals led Mcgill to a 81–73 victory over the Bishops Gaiters.
#6 Shane Osayande
The 2nd leading rebounder and 8th leading scorer in the country was bound to show up on this list eventually. The 5–3 Huskies need performances like this to stay in contention in a strong Canada-West conference. A monstrous 30 point, 18 rebound, 2 assist, 3 steal performance lifted Saskatchewan to the 78–62 victory
#7 Conor Morgan
Most great shooters have feeling in all 5 fingers in their hands, Conor Morgan after slicing his hand open in the summer has numbed the feeling in two of the fingers on his right shooting hand and he’s now playing some of the best basketball in his U Sports/CIS career. The UBC Thunderbirds are the #2 team in the country thanks to the efforts of Conor Morgan and Jordan Jensen-Whyte in the first semester. Morgan is 3rd in field goal percentage 2nd in scoring in Canada and had himself a night November 18th against the Bisons putting up 35 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists in a 96–89 win.
#8 Josh Ross
Thomas Cooper is the leading scorer in Canada, so it’s not often he’s outscored by someone on the opposing team. Josh Ross did just that putting up 34 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals in an 87–83 LOSS to the Calgary Dinos! How does somebody put up a line like this in a LOSS?!
#9 Erik Nissen
The nation’s leading rebounder and 5th leading scorer led the way for Acadia with 33 points, 18 rebounds and 5 blocks INCLUDING the game winning free throws with 7 seconds on the clock in the 89–88 Acadia victory over UNB.
#10 Kadre Gray
Rookie sensation Kadre Gray has taken not only the OUA but U Sports Basketball by storm. The leading scorer in the OUA has been a revelation for coach Shawn Swords in a Laurentian program going through a youth resurgence early this season. The 34 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists in the Voyageurs 86–82 victory over Windsor was Kadre’s coming out party, which continued through to the winter break.
