“If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.”

Ninth commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, Texas Exes Life Member and Distinguished Alumnus. This was the opening phrase Admiral McRaven decided to use for his speech at The University of Texas for the class of 2014.

Making your bed every morning.

One of the most trivial things you can do as soon as you get up can massively impact your day, and make a big difference on how you go about it.

It can have countless psychological and practical benefits which allow you to start off the day right — it’s your first victory of the day, which sets you up for success for the rest of it, it helps you develop a habit and at the end of the day, you come home to a tidy room. What’s not to love?

Of course, Admiral McRaven wasn’t trying to convince anyone that such a simple task would actually change the world, and neither am I.

Making your bed symbolises all the small things in life and how much impact some of them can have on you and others, whether you realise it or not.
